  • Lake Powell Pipeline Hammered! | Save the Colorado
    tour of Robert and Jamie Redford s Watershed Movie concluded last week We went to the Seven City Sins of the Southwest U S San Diego Los Angeles Phoenix Tucson Salt Lake City Denver and finally and aptly Las Vegas The Vegas event was a great success with a full house screening and local dignitaries on the panel including a County Commissioner and a State Senator Jenna Morton Boardmember of the Springs Preserve was an extraordinary host as was Scot Rutledge for the Nevada Conservation League See all the photos of the event on our Facebook page here Third some good news in the Grand Canyon The once thought Canyon extirpated Razorback Sucker was found alive in the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon after 20 years of being missing in action Widely reported in the national press one newspaper article says The razorback sucker was one of the biggest suckers in North America at up to 3 feet in length and it used to be found throughout the Colorado River system It s one of six fish species previously found only in the arms and branches of the Colorado River and nowhere else on the globe We are happy to see this Sucker back in the canyon hopefully more of his friends swam along on the trip And how about this if the Razorback Sucker is still in the Grand Canyon maybe Hayduke Lives in there somewhere too Finally we cannot complete this post without noting that last week was the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act a law that has fundamentally changed and protected America s waterways including the Colorado River and its tributaries As one piece of a nationwide celebration last week we note that Waterkeeper Alliance President Bobby Kennedy Jr made some waves in New

    his work as a labor leader in the Southwest U S In addition he advocated for protecting people from dangerous farm chemicals and for protecting the desert rivers plants and people of the Southwest U S You can watch a TV news video about the event by clicking here Team Jamie and Robert Redford continue to make big news with the Watershed Movie This month TV Week s News Pro Magazine featured an interview with the father son environmental duo Read the TV Week article here Watershed explores a new water conservation ethic for the Colorado River basin highlighting positive stories and also calls 2 action that residents can take to help protect and restore the Colorado River So far the film has been shown in almost 80 cities On Thursday the Las Vegas premier of Watershed is showing at the Springs Preserve After the film we will have a panel discussion that will include Producer Jamie Redford and Director Mark Decena Clark County Commissioner Larry Brown will moderate the conversation More information about the screening can be seen here in this Las Vegas Review Journal newspaper article Finally last week National Geographic featured an excellent blog post about the economy of the Colorado River Featuring Amy Kober who works for the environmental organization American Rivers Amy considers the value of recreation in the Grand Canyon In addition to summarizing a recent economic analysis of recreation valuation Amy also lists intangibles that we haven t yet learned how to place a dollar value on Amy says How about the associated benefits to our physical and mental health our relationships feeling refreshed and more productive in our jobs and communities when we come home Take a read of Amy s blog post here Thank you for your support This entry was

    practically flood new sprawling population growth in Southwest Utah Good work Zach and URC Read the full article in the Deseret News here The Salt Lake Tribune also editorialized against the pipeline read that editorial here Robert Redford s Watershed Movie continues to roll through the major cities in the Southwest U S These past two weeks we were in Phoenix and Tucson for premiers of the film Both events were very successful hundreds of people attended signed the petition to restore water to the Colorado River Delta and received free Save The Colorado posters Led by the Sonoran Institute both of these events partnered with conservation groups in Arizona including the Environmental Defense Fund the Tucson Audubon Society and others At the Phoenix event renowned environmental reporter Shaun McKinnon of the Arizona Republic moderated the expert panel discussion after the film The Tucson screening included a great interview of producer Jaime Redford in the Arizona Daily Star here Occasionally we try to keep you informed about other related river restoration issues around the U S At this time the tip of the sword in our community s movement to protect and restore rivers is occurring in San Francisco and Yosemite National Park In the November election San Francisco voters will determine whether the City should embark on progressive water supply solutions including conservation recycling stormwater reuse and groundwater development all as an alternative to the 100 year old environmental disaster that dammed and drowned Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park Interestingly although San Francisco is known as one of America s most progressive cities its cousin cities to the south Los Angeles and San Diego both of which use Colorado River water are already trying to implement water conservation recycling and reuse programs San Francisco lags far behind

    US and two Mexican states and over 20 major dams the Colorado River runs dry before it reaches its natural end at the Gulf of California 5 trillion gallons of water is drained out of the river each year Unless action is taken the river will continue its retreat due to increasing demand and climate change a potentially catastrophic scenario for the 35 million Americans who rely on the river for their drinking water and the nearly quarter million Americans whose jobs depend on Colorado River recreation Having made the film with a grassroots campaign in mind Redford anticipates WATERSHED will be the entry point for viewers who want to engage and take action to protect and begin restoring the river Each tour stop will highlight Calls 2 Action so that Southwesterners can make a direct impact on the future of the river Those actions may include Personal water conservation pledges Contacting local water district managers and federal decision makers in support of stronger water conservation programs in Southwest U S cities Contacting federal decision makers to support a bi national agreement with Mexico to restore the flow of water to the Gulf of California Making donations to help purchase the water rights necessary to restore the river s connection to the Gulf of California The Redford Center has joined with dozens of leading environmental organizations to foster education and inspire action each tour stop will be co sponsored by several local and national organizations that are working in unison to protect and restore the river This film tour offers a great opportunity for people throughout the Southwest U S to learn more and get involved said Gary Wockner Director of the Save The Colorado River campaign based in Colorado Each of us can make a difference to create a
