    need to give back The SCH community gives selflessly of their time talents and resources to make SCH what it is today a school with high standards strong values and happy hardworking students Our students reflect a generous spirit because the adults in their lives model philanthropic behavior Simply put philanthropy connects people to SCH in a deeper way and makes the community stronger You make this possible Make a Gift SCH Students on Kindness and Making a Difference Students Share the SCH Culture of Kindness Here is a glimpse into the wonderful service SCH students provided around the Thanksgiving holiday and which they engage in throughout the year SCH hosted its annual Day of Service the Monday before Thanksgiving While our youngest students donated over 1 000 to UNICEF sent 150 baskets of food to Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry and delivered over 200 food items and 22 baskets of means to St Vincent de Paul s emergency food cupboard our Upper School students ventured out into the community Upper School students teamed up in 15 different groups and ventured to various parts of the city Many groups traveled to homeless shelters to clean prepare and serve meals while others traveled to places like Valley Green the Schuylkill banks and Gorgas Park to clean up mulch and pick up litter Many others visited local elementary schools to do educational activities decorate for the holidays and spend time with the students Service Day is more than just giving back to the community it is about making connections and formulating relationships with our community that will last longer than a temporary amount of time said Eric Dolente co head of the Service Council It s about going back to complete more service with the organization you connect with In the end the representatives on Service Council want to open up students eyes to opportunities to connect and grow with our community The aim of the day was to help educate our students and faculty about the importance of volunteerism in our community and beyond said Ann Zalasky one of the faculty members in charge of organizing Service Day For many of our students Service Day is a pivotal experience that helps to open their eyes to the world outside of SCH The smiles on the SCH students faces and the smiles on the younger students faces nothing beats that Upper School teacher Jenna Schieber Students Share the SCH Culture of Kindness Abroad This past November 40 SCH students traveled to Peru and Thailand as part of the SCH Global Travel Program One of the most important features of these trips is a meaningful service learning experience Service is about fostering mutual connection and reciprocity working together and learning from members of local communities When SCH students engage in service projects abroad they are meeting locally identified needs and working alongside members of their host communities One of the projects our students worked on was a development project at a local high school

    Lower Schools Upgrade Existing Academic Spaces for Middle and Upper Schools Construct a new Lower School facility housing both boys and girls divisions Create a central bus parent drop off loop on Cherokee Campus that provides for off street car stacking Upon occupancy of the new Lower School demolish the current girls Lower School and construct a new Middle School entrance Renovate and retrofit freed up spaces on Willow Grove and Cherokee Campuses to accommodate needs of Upper and Middle Schools Sands Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership In 2012 SCH Academy launched the Entrepreneurial Leadership CEL now named for President Priscilla G Sands which offers real world skill sets and mindsets and prepares students with competencies that national education and business leaders have identified as important for success in their higher education and beyond Students in all divisions are engaged in the CEL curriculum in grade appropriate experiences and classes The designated SANDS CEL space is located in the heart of the Cherokee Campus Upper School and is a crucial hub for engineering design robotics arts new media and entrepreneurial ventures In honor of their 40th reunion the Springside Class of 1975 chose to fund the enhancements to the Digital Media Lab These improvements started this summer provide for an expansion of the lab into the CEL teaching space Funds contributed support a new space for girls robotics and the 2D and 3D Design Lab as well as the purchase of a 2D precise cutter of wood plastic and metal allowing for computer design in 2D with intention cutting and assembling 3D objects for several CEL and new media and engineering and robotics classes Students use the 3D printers to manufacturer components for robots make prototypes for their Venture Incubator projects and create artwork The Class of 1975 raised over 125 000 to fund a new space dedicated to cross curricular work in the arts new media engineering and robotics Further improvements are pending funding Make a gift to the Campus Master Plan The Endowment Build a robust endowment to ensure the necessary financial support for the implementation of an innovative learning and teaching environment with secure provisions for the future Endowed funds play an important role in Springside Chestnut Hill Academy s overall development program The annual income from these funds enriches the educational program and provides benefits for faculty and tuition assistance for students in need With gifts of this kind the principal is invested in the school s endowment portfolio and the income is restricted to a specific need These are active funds to which contributions may be made at any time Many families continue to make capital gifts to a specific fund often to honor a family member a beloved teacher or a scholarship fund they care about in addition to supporting the SCH Fund By establishing an endowed fund or contributing to an existing fund you can support Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in several ways A scholarship fund helps to make a Springside Chestnut Hill Academy
