    will learn innovative ideas on how to teach this important subject to students Professional development credits are provided In addition to learning from experts attendees are able to collaborate and share ideas with fellow educators Workshop 1 An introduction to Climate Change Using Clean Air Cool Planet s Climate Change Backpack The first more general workshop provides an introduction to climate science and activities to teach about these concepts An overview of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect the carbon cycle and climate change measurement is included Using charts graphs and props such as an imitation ice core it reveals ways in which we know our climate is changing It teaches activities and details resources that are good for educating about the issue highlighting the Climate Change Backpack This first workshop also explores how climate change impacts real people and discusses whatindividuals can do to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions There are no Workshop 1 sessions scheduled at this time Please check back later Workshop 2 Teaching About Climate Change Solutions Using the Climate Change Backpack The second specifically solutions focused workshop was developed in response to teacher demand and also utilizes the Climate Change Backpack This workshop details

    clean energy kits are organized around three sources of renewable energy wind solar and hydrogen fuel cells Designing for the Wind involves students in the process of controlling variables that will directly impact energy output Participants use a working wind generator and an electrical meter to conduct a series of experiments that demonstrate how wind could potentially serve as a significant source of power in the Northeast The kits contains materials for students to build and compare windmills with various blade configurations using different numbers of blades and positioning them at different angles to see how to maximize the power generated Not only do students learn about the technology needed to generate wind energy but they have a better understanding of how clean energy is a solution to climate change Energy from the Sun demonstrates the photovoltaic effect and how to measure electrical power Watts in units of Volts and Amperes Students will learn how the changing position of the sun in the sky affects the performance of a solar cell They will assemble cells in series and parallel circuits to vary the voltage and amperage of a photovoltaic array Photovoltaics are beginning to make inroads into the region and are a clean alternative for onsite power installations Fuel Cells for our Future incorporates the use of the photovoltaic array from the previous activity to split water through electrolysis in a reversible fuel cell This produces hydrogen and oxygen gases which are collected and then recombined in the fuel cell The electrical energy produced by the electrochemical reaction is used to propel an electric car with water as its only byproduct Fuel cells require a secondary source of energy such as wind or solar to produce hydrogen gas but once produced the hydrogen acts as a clean energy carrier and one day may largely replace fossil fuels for automobiles homes and businesses The ten science centers participating in this project are CT Audubon Connecticut s Beardsley Zoo The Children s Museum The Trash and Garbage Museum Discovery Museum and Planetarium Dinosaur State Park Eli Whitney Museum the Peabody Museum of Natural History Stepping Stones Museum for Children and Talcott Mountain Science Center for Student Involvement You can learn more about this program at http www ctinnovations com funding ccef climate solutions php or contact Karin Jakubowski or one of the participating science centers to schedule a class or for more information Clean Energy Kits available through Massachusetts science centers The New England Science Center Collaborative has also launched the Clean Energy Climate Solutions project in Massachusetts The project is a collaboration between the Boston Museum of Science the New England Aquarium and the EcoTarium in Worcester under a grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative s MTC K 12 Education Program which provides educational tools and programs on renewable energy to science centers and the schools they serve through their outreach programs The Massachusetts program will reach a total of about 8 000 adults and children through programs conducted on the

Connecticut State University was established in 2001 The work of ISE focuses on matters relating to the formation of public policy providing educational outreach supporting energy solutions and maintaining information resources on energy and sustainability Laurel L Kohl is ISE s Energy Technical Specialist for Education Training She is responsible for energy education related projects including curriculum development and delivery coordination of workshops conferences and education outreach 1 When it comes to addressing climate change what do you see as the Institute for Sustainable Energy s greatest accomplishment to date The Institute supports energy policy energy information and energy education in Connecticut We act as an impartial unbiased resource for legislators and policy makers municipalities and educators Because of this we have been able to effect changes in the state that improve energy use access to services and how our students are taught about energy climate and the environment We were a stakeholder in the original Connecticut Climate Action Plan in 2005 Through that work we have worked with collaborative partners on initiatives including promoting Biofuel production Green Jobs Climate Education supports for municipalities in town energy use and building Green Schools and promoting Green Campuses in our colleges and universities All of these areas have positive solutions based impacts on reducing climate change 2 What projects are you currently working on regarding climate change education and clean energy We are currently working with Bridgeport on a project that will make that community more sustainable Our part includes creating a workforce development plan for Green Jobs helping to create the job ladders that will allow workers to grow their skills and advance their careers with family supporting jobs We serve on the Governor s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Taskforce helping Connecticut to plan for low impact transportation of the future We are benchmarking municipal and school buildings for towns providing them with the data and tools to assess their energy use and where best to update and renovate their buildings for energy savings We are the Green Schools Advocate for the State s Green Building Council working with districts who are building and renovating their schools helping them to plan ahead for energy savings and use of renewable energy technologies We administer CT Energy Education a high school science resource for Connecticut educators that provides lessons in the fundamentals of energy energy efficiency and climate change all with a Connecticut twist Keep Connecticut Cool is our contest for students encouraging them to develop and implement climate change solutions in their schools and communities 3 What do you think is the most important message to share with youth regarding climate change You can make a difference Through Keep Connecticut Cool we have seen hundreds of students grades 5 12 make real changes happen in their communities They choose the projects to work on They learn how the system works They get to see the results and it is astounding We ve had kids improve the energy use of their schools create community gardens abolish Styrofoam trays in the lunch room share information with thousands of people and much more 4 What are the benefits of being a member of the Northeast Science Center Collaborative and working with other climate educators across the State Being part of the Northeast Science Center Collaborative has given ISE a unique set of partners in several projects The Science Centers are at the leading edge of educating our citizens about the impact of environmental issues Each center has a different focus from water to land to animals and habitats ISE draws on all of that expertise to support our programs and to get the climate change message out to a yet broader audience For myself as an educator the resources and conversations we have had with THE NEW ENGLAND CARBON CHALLENGE A New England Carbon Challenge training workshop was held at Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill Ct CA CP s Julia Dundorf Manager of Community Relations and founder and co director of the Carbon Challenge and Karin Jakubowski Manager of Science Education and Outreach launched the first of several Carbon Challenge workshops geared toward science centers Approximately twenty educators working at science centers across the state attended The main goal of the workshop was to provide background information on the New England Carbon Challenge formerly the New Hampshire Carbon Challenge a joint initiative of the University of New Hampshire and Clean Air Cool Cool Planet The Carbon Challenge is for New England residents and works to educate inspire and support
