    a foundation for future development as healthy adjusted children are more likely to grow into happy productive adults 1 2 Optimal brain development requires a stimulating environment adequate nutrients and social interaction with attentive caregivers 3 Yet in Nairobi slums early childhood development ECD is a challenge Child mortality rates in Nairobi slums are 2 5 times those of other urban districts and 1 5 times higher than Kenya s national average 4 As part of our holistic approach to development SHOFCO S ECD Program is mix gendered providing a safe stimulating early learning environment for children 5 years and under experiencing or at high risk of developmental delays We link our daycare to early childhood health and nutrition programs ensuring participants receive the care they need for proper growth Because parent care outside our program is critical we actively involve caregivers through regular meetings support groups and workshops that educate them about the benefits of ECD Caregivers also participate in integrated SHOFCO programs such as Maternal and Child Healthcare Groups Saving and Loans and the SHOFCO Women s Empowerment Program 1 Shonkoff Jack P et al From Neurons to Neighborhoods 2 Heckman James J Skill Formation and the Economics

    Place Margaret s Safe Place MSP is a boarding facility that houses the most vulnerable students of The Kibera School for Girls Because SHOFCO targets the brightest but most at risk girls our younger students have often been victims of sexual assault malnutrition extreme negligence and other abuses At the Kibera School for Girls roughly one fifth of our inagural class were survivoris of physical and sexual abuse a statistic that spurred the creation of our safe house in 2010 While SHOFCO s philosophy is that students ideally should live with their families Margaret s Safe Place uniquely serves our most vulnerable students experiencing situations at home that comprise their personal safety Some girls live in MSP for years others for weeks until we find a better permanent solution MSP is a vibrant warm home presently providing holistic care for 10 KSG students Boarders also receive additional psychological support from KSG social workers who if possible work towards a resolution to the living situation with the student s parent or legal guardian In the mean time at Margaret s Safe Place they are part of a close knit thriving sisterhood that shepherds incredible improvements in the girls health and well

    our cadre of exceptional teachers KSG currently serves 216 students in pre K through 6th grade In 2012 we opened a new school building equipped with 10 classrooms art and theater rooms an auditorium and a roof top playground The addition more than doubled our capacity allowing us to accept two classes of 20 pre K students each year At full capacity KSG will expand to follow students through 8th grade ultimately serving 400 students We have big dreams for our girls and KSG will continue to grow its capacity adding a fully equipped computer lab and classroom space to accommodate our leap from 12 to 40 girls per grade The Kibera School for Girls is comprised of a community of caregivers teachers parents and staff deeply invested in girls education We are proud of our dedicated caregivers who work at the school and community center in lieu of paying school fees our passionate staff committed to the well being of our students and our brilliant teachers invested beyond the instruction of our superior curriculum With a teacher student ratio of just 1 8 compared to 1 87 in Kibera KSG s learning environment fosters success Our fourth grade students ranked first place in the district on their first government exam by a 50 point margin For the fourth consecutive year our Kindergarten students won the National Elocution Poetry contest While 100 of KSG second grade students can read an English paragraph and perform subtraction only 15 and 21 of second graders nationally can complete these tasks On a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education preparatory exam national standardized test taken at the 8th grade level our 4th graders averaged 465 out of a maximum score of 500 This score is indicative of future performance Last year s high score in

    14 double the national rate 1 SHOFCO s JJJ Clinic has a specialized Comprehensive Care Center CCC for HIV AIDS patients that includes antiretroviral therapy prevention of mother to child transmission PMTCT and mentor mother support groups All pregnant women are tested for HIV and HIV affected children receive post exposure prophylaxis PEP Since PEP medication is strong SHOFCO takes extra care that young HIV affected children are adequately fed via our nutrition program to ensure effective treatment SHOFCO also works to combat persistent stigma against HIV infected women Mothers often refuse be tested for HIV for fear that they will not be able to manage the consequences of testing positive In response SHOFCO s community health workers conduct door to door outreach to encourage women to have themselves and their young children tested Beyond the JJJ Clinic SHOFCO s Women s Empowerment Project SWEP teaches business and entrepreneurship skills to HIV positive women and provides them with a living wage through the production and sale of bags jewelry laptop cases and other unique goods 1 The Right to Water and Sanitation in Nairobi Kenya an Action Research Report Umande 2007 Trust COHRE Hakijamii p9 Changing the Life of a

    population growth predicted to occur in urban areas of developing countries and only 52 of births currently occurring at healthcare facilities in Kibera Planet of Slums SHOFCO is commited to offering services essential to maintaining the continued health of mothers and their children Our Maternal and Child Healthcare program is administered by expert midwives and nurses in a new dedicated wing of the JJJ clinic Members of this program receive full access to pre natal postpartum and infant care In addition to providing high quality medical services our maternal health care creates a long term support system for young and old mothers alike In this innovative program we not only empower women to take control of their own health we give them the resources they need to do so effectively Our mothers are deeply connected to all of our specialized women s services including postpartum counseling family planning STI testing cervical cancer screening and gender based violence response In the Nairobi slums a CDC led study found that over 70 of children showed moderate to severe stunting as a result of chronic malnutrition In response to the enormous need for primary care of the youngest residents in Kibera SHOFCO continues to develop our pediatric focus within our Maternal and Child Healthcare program that targets children during the crucial developmental stages age five and under In our new Out Patient Department specifically for this age group nurses and clinical officers provide primary care immunizations and access to nutrition packets for severely malnourished children In addition to continuous clinical monitoring of children under age 5 the program includes extensive nutrition education for parents enabling them to monitor their children s growth Changing the Life of a Girl Can Change the Future of a Community Learn About Our Model 99 99 of maternal
