government its most common function is direct participation in the governing process through self governance Also called third party governance or self regulation self governance is the practice of direct management of social or economic behaviors by civil society organizations Often been criticized as putting the fox in charge of the henhouse self governance is considered by some to be solely a Western or Northern practice unsuited to or too advanced for developing environments Yet there are numerous examples of self governance throughout the developing world Now a recent Thompson Reuter study found that third party governance is becoming increasingly common in globalized markets where no one government can enforce its rules which suggests that not exposing developing markets to self governance could compromise their long term competitiveness On Wednesday April 27 the Civil Society and the Democracy and Governance workgroups will hold a panel discussion on self governance by examining three cases in which an economic and or social goal was achieved by shifting responsibility from the public to the nonprofit sector water utility management Philippines management of community conservancies Namibia and food safety certification Kosovo More speakers to be announced We look forward to you your participation Moderator
