    regional conferences the SIG has capitalized on its strong financial position to continue general student travel support to both SIGCOMM and CoNEXT conferences The SIGCOMM newsletter Computer Communications Review continues to thrive as a journal with high quality and timely articles under S Keshav s editorial guidance Acceptance rates for the newsletter are around 20 on par with top tier conferences CCR turnaround time is rapid compared to most journals for technical papers it is 8 weeks for review and 16 weeks for publication for editorials it is 1 3 days for review and 6 weeks for publication We continue to offer both online and print access to the newsletter This year we started offering a discounted online only SIG membership that does not include a print copy of the journal SIG members who still desire a print membership can continue to receive a print copy at a slightly higher membership rate As S Keshav s term as CCR editor in chief is ending we have recruited Dina Papagiannaki to take over starting September 2012 With respect to awards SIGCOMM has recognized Nick McKeown with the SIGCOMM award for lifetime achievement he will receive the award and present a keynote talk at the annual SIGCOMM conference in August 2012 in Helsinki SIGCOMM also has recognized Multi Resource Fair Queueing for Packet Processing by Ali Ghodsi Vyas Sekar Matei Zaharia and Ion Stoica as the best paper and Picasso Flexible RF and Spectrum Slicing by Steven Hong Jeff Mehlman and Sachin Katti as the best student paper in that conference The Test of Time award will also be given at the conference for the best papers with long lasting impact from 10 12 years ago This paper is from SIGCOMM 2002 Tussle in cyberspace defining tomorrow s internet by David Clark Karen Sollins John Wroclawski and Bob Braden SIGCOMM has recognized Sylvia Ratnasamy with its Rising Star award she was given the award at the CoNEXT conference held in December 2011 in Tokyo This year we also instituted a new doctoral dissertation award to recognize the best Ph D thesis in the computer networking field in a given year The first doctoral dissertation award will be given to Minlan Yu at the SIGCOMM conference in August 2012 During the year six SIGCOMM members were recognized as ACM Fellows Ramesh Govindan Peter B Key Keith Marzullo Satoshi Matsuoka Amin Vahdat David Wetherall The following SIGCOMM members were made Distinguished Members of ACM Elizabeth M Belding Sung Ju Lee Puneet Sharma The SIGCOMM Education Director Olivier Bonaventure continues to maintain an education website http education sigcomm org where members of the community are able to share education related resources The SIGCOMM conference in August 2011 featured a workshop on computer networking education The workshop combined short presentations of papers two work sessions on What are the networking principles and How to integrate experiments and simulations in a networking course The forty attendees discussed the place of networking in the standard CS curriculums to

    year we have begun to make some changes to the online presence of CCR and we are examining the possibility of offering online only SIG memberships in 2012 to those members who don t require a print copy of the journal With respect to awards SIGCOMM has recognized Vern Paxson with the SIGCOMM award for lifetime achievement he will receive the award and present a keynote talk at the annual SIGCOMM conference in August 2011 in Toronto SIGCOMM also has recognized They Can Hear Your Heartbeats Non Invasive Security for Implanted Medical Devices S Gollakota H Hassanieh B Ransford D Katabi and K Fu as the best paper in that conference Two Test of Time awards will also be given at the conference for the best papers with long lasting impact from 10 12 years ago Those papers are both from SIGCOMM 2001 Chord A Scalable Peer to peer Lookup Service for Internet Applications by I Stoica R Morris D Karger M F Kaashoek and H Balakrishnan and A Scalable Content addressable Network by S Ratnasamy P Francis M Handley R Karp and S Shenker SIGCOMM has recognized Nick Feamster with its Rising Star award he received his award and delivered a keynote address at the CoNEXT conference held in December 2010 in Philadelphia We have also instituted a new doctoral dissertation award to recognize the best Ph D thesis in the computer networking field in a given year The award runs on a similar timetable to the ACM s best thesis award After several years of diligent service Ramesh Govindan has stepped down as Awards Chair and Bruce Maggs has been appointed in his place Bruce will administer the numerous awards programs that the SIG offers During the year three SIGCOMM members were recognized as ACM Fellows past SIGCOMM Chair Mark Crovella Stefan Savage and David Rosenblum The following SIGCOMM members were made Distinguished Members of ACM Martin Arlitt Serge Fdida Yu Charlie Hu Shivkumar Kalyanaraman Ramachandran Ramjee Joseph D Touch Alec Wolman and Jun Xu At the start of FY2011 Olivier Bonaventure had just taken on the role of Education Director for SIGCOMM With a full year in the position Olivier s work is bearing fruit We have an education website education sigcomm org by which members of the community are able to share education related resources There will be a workshop on computer networking education at this year s annual conference Olivier is also running a Shadow PC for the CoNEXT conference as a way to educate the current generation of graduate students in the best practices of technical paper reviewing and program committee operation SIGCOMM has now had a Technical Steering Committee in place for just over a year The TSC has responsibility for selecting PC chairs crafting policies related to the PC operation and technical program and providing a repository of knowledge about the technical aspects of the conference Administrative and fiscal responsibility for the conference continues to reside with the SIGCOMM EC The TSC

    continues to thrive as a journal with high quality and timely articles under S Keshav s editorial guidance An online submission and review system has been established allowing authors and reviewers to interact with each other anonymously before a paper acceptance decision is made This has substantially improved authors perception of the review process and simultaneously improved the paper quality Acceptance rates for the newsletter are around 20 on par with top tier conferences Turnaround time is quite a lot better than many journals SIGCOMM became an approved nominating organization for the Research Highlights section of CACM We are asking PC chairs from all of our sponsored conferences to submit the most suitable papers for consideration and at this point we have submitted two nominations to the CACM editors With respect to awards SIGCOMM has recognized Radia Perlman with the SIGCOMM award for lifetime achievement she will receive the award and present a keynote talk at the annual SIGCOMM conference in August 2010 in New Delhi SIGCOMM also has recognized Binbin Chen Ziling Zhou Yuda Zhao and Haifeng Yu from the National University of Singapore for the best paper in that conference Efficient Error Estimating Coding Feasibility and Applications Two Test of Time awards will also be given at the conference for the best papers with long lasting impact from 10 12 years ago Those papers are both from the SIGCOMM conference of 1999 Griffin T G and Wilfong G An analysis of BGP convergence properties and Faloutsos M Faloutsos P and Faloutsos C On power law relationships of the Internet topology SIGCOMM has also recognized Ratul Mahajan with its Rising Star award he received his award and delivered a keynote address at the CoNEXT conference held in December 2009 in Rome Further four SIGCOMM members were recognized as ACM Fellows Bruce Davie Jeffrey A Dean Farnam Jahanian and John Chi Shing Lui Five SIGCOMM members were made Distinguished Members of ACM Mark Crovella Richard P Draves Venkata N Padmanabhan Ramon C Puigjaner and Prashant Shenoy In the prior year the SIG had decided to add its support to ACM W s scholarship program and the first recipient of this award Mariyam Mirza from the University of Wisconsin Madison attended the 2009 SIGCOMM conference in Barcelona SIGCOMM s support augments the ACM W scholarship for any recipient who chooses to attend a SIGCOMM sponsored or in cooperation conference or workshop covering full costs of travel lodging and conference registration In addition SIGCOMM helps find informal mentors for ACM W award winners to interact with at the conference SIGCOMM continues its geodiversity travel grants for five years now we have awarded travel grants to support junior researchers from under represented regions in attending the main SIGCOMM conference this year support was extended to selected authors at the Latin American Networking Conference LANC 2009 enabling them to travel to New Delhi for the 2010 SIGCOMM conference The SIG has also increased its financial support for student travel grants to both the flagship

    EC does Over the past year the EC has received considerable feedback on the organization of the SIGCOMM conference and this has prompted a series of discussions on how conference oversight may be improved Currently the conference is managed by the EC in the role of steering committee The EC has developed a proposal for a new arrangement with technical oversight vested in a separate steering committee SIGCOMM held elections in June leading to election of Bruce Davie as the new chair and re election of Henning Schulzrinne as Vice Chair and Tilman Wolf as Secretary Treasurer SIGCOMM also has a new awards chair this year Ramesh Govindan USC takes over from John Byers With respect to awards SIGCOMM has recognized Jon Crowcroft with the SIGCOMM award for lifetime achievement he will receive his award and present a keynote talk at the annual SIGCOMM conference in August 2009 in Barcelona SIGCOMM also has recognized the Best Paper and the Best Student Paper at the 2009 conference the winners will be announced at the conference A Test of Time award will also be given at the conference for the best paper s from 10 12 years ago Further SIGCOMM members Hari Balakrishnan Jennifer Rexford Mark Squillante and Doug Terry were recognized as ACM Fellows SIGCOMM has also recognized Dina Papagiannaki with its Rising Star award she received her award at the CoNEXT conference held in December 2008 in Madrid This year the SIG decided to add its support to ACM W s scholarship program ACM W provides approximately 12 scholarships of 500 each to help women students attend a research conference SIGCOMM decided to augment the scholarship for any recipient who chooses to attend a SIGCOMM sponsored or in cooperation conference or workshop The additional funds provided by SIGCOMM will cover

    completely revised and reorganized We have adopted a content management system allowing easier and more consistent updates better navigation a calendar of events and news via RSS feeds New programs This year SIGCOMM working with the CoNEXT steering committee has instituted a Rising Star award recognizing a young researcher an individual no older than 35 who has made outstanding research contributions to the field of communication networks during this early part of his or her career This award will be presented at the annual ACM CoNEXT conference Awards SIGCOMM has recognized Don Towsley with the SIGCOMM award for lifetime achievement his award is in honor of his contributions to the modeling analysis and control of communication networks He will receive his award and present a keynote talk at the annual SIGCOMM conference in August 2008 in Seattle SIGCOMM also has recognized Shyamnath Gollakota and Dina Katabi for the best paper in that conference ZigZag Decoding Combating Hidden Terminals in Wireless Networks Three papers from 10 12 years ago have also been recognized with the Test of Time award SIGCOMM member John Klensin was recognized as an ACM Fellow SIG Newsletter Computer Communications Review has shown an increase in readership as

    six months out of phase with the main SIGCOMM conference CoNext 07 will take place in NYC in December and return to a European location in 2008 The conference will include a student workshop and a workshop on future Internet architectures Finances The SIG finances are in great shape with a surplus for the fourth fiscal year in a row We have completely recovered from some losses during the year immediately following the burst of of the tech bubble and the 9 11 attacks Our current fund balance is healthy giving us room to take some calculated risks in the coming years Awards The SIGCOMM community had strong year of recognition of the research contributions of its members Five senior members of the SIGCOMM community became ACM Fellows Albert Greenberg Roch Guerin Lixia Zhang Nick McKeown and Vern Paxson SIGCOMM recognized Sally Floyd with the SIGCOMM Award for lifetime achievement she will receive her award and present a keynote talk at the annual SIGCOMM conference in August 2007 in Kyoto Japan For the second year in a row we have awarded the SIGCOMM Test of Time award to recognize a paper published 10 to 12 years in the past in Computer Communication Review or any SIGCOMM sponsored or co sponsored conference The most recent winners were David Tennenhouse and David Wetherall for their paper Toward an Active Network Architecture originally published in the April 1996 issue of our SIG s newsletter Computer Communications Review Geodiversity travel grants For the third year in a row we have awarded travel grants to support junior researchers from under represented regions in attending the main SIGCOMM conference We are also providing support to the Latin America Networking Conference supporting travel and expenses for two outside speakers to attend the LANC 07 conference and the

    conference The first winner was Vern Paxson for his paper End to End Routing Behavior in the Internet at SIGCOMM 96 We also retrospectively presented the award to the authors of the notable papers from 1969 to 1995 that were published in a special issue of ACM SIGCOMM Computer Communications Review in January of 1995 Geodiversity travel grants Following up on last year s initiative to fund junior faculty from Latin America to attend the main SIGCOMM conference the SIG sponsored three junior faculty to attend SIGCOMM 06 The recipients hailed from Brazil India and Thailand New at SIGCOMM 06 The main SIGCOMM conference made several changes this year First the program chairs experimented with a two tiered program committee where PC light members reviewed papers and contributed to e mail discussions and PC heavy members also attended the PC meeting and did additional reviews of the papers in serious contention Second the program chairs expanded the program by accepting 37 papers a record number while continuing the single track format Third they created a discussion board for the community to post comments and questions about the papers before during and after the conference Fourth they had a public review in the style of a NY Times Book Review for each accepted paper These initiatives should go a long way in increasing the energy and vibrancy of the conference CoNext The SIG decided to become the financial sponsor for the CoNext Conference on Future Networking Technologies starting in 2007 The annual conference initiated by the European networking research community began in 2005 as an in cooperation with SIGCOMM event We envision that the conference will run six months out of phase with the main SIGCOMM conference and will be located primarily in Europe taking place periodically in other regions particularly

    papers out of 157 submissions and had 113 attendees HotNets 04 accepted 24 papers out of 128 submissions and had 71 attendees SenSys 04 accepted 21 papers out of 145 submissions and had 221 attendees The scope of papers published in the conferences has been widening particularly in the areas of wireless and delay tolerant networks security and network management New workshops conferences In the spring of 2005 SIGCOMM held its first SIGCOMM Asia Workshop http www acm org sigs sigcomm asia in Beijing Based on the success of the first event we are starting discussions about having another workshop in 2006 SIGCOMM also got involved as a co sponsor of the Symposium on Architectures for Networking and Communications Systems briding the SIGARCH and SIGCOMM communities The first conference will take place in October 2005 Connecting with Latin America The Latin America Networking Conference will take place for the third time in October 2005 Although SIGCOMM was the financial sponsor for the event in 2001 and 2003 we have changed to in cooperation status for the 2005 event The 2001 and 2003 events led to large financial losses for the SIG though the losses were contained in 2003 through more conservative budgetting To broaden our efforts to connect with the networking community in Latin America we dedicated 10 000 to fund four junior faculty from Latin America to attend SIGCOMM 05 in Philadelphia Newsletter The Computer Communications Review CCR the SIGCOMM newsletter has a new editor Christophe Diot Christophe has been making changes in the newsletter format to place more emphasis on rapid publication and on short papers on work in progress and topics of community interest in addition to the regular reviewed papers The first few issues in the new format have met with great enthusiasm Current issues for
