  • On-U Sound In The Area - Mark Stewart / Maffia biography
recently brought them to the UK and started working with them on a largely experimental but ground breaking project called Fats Comet Stewart heard them play at the Language Lab in the mid 80s It was this tape they d done with like rockets going off and drums that sounded like steamhammers I was going mental playing it to everyone Sherwood soon introduced the trio to Stewart and so the new Maffia were formed Parallel to recording as the Maffia for Stewart without him and sometimes replaced by Gary Clail or Peech Boy Bernard Fowler Keith Doug Skip and Sherwood continued to record as Fats Comet and later Tackhead with their own equally influential brand of funk soul sonic mayhem The As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade LP Meanwhile Mark Stewart The Maffia s Veneer LP was without doubt one the heaviest albums he ever made Passivecation Program sets the agenda for the rest of the LP by being wickedly harsh dubby and funky The track was a highlight of the Maffia s live set at the time and Paul Meme recalls their early live shows Basically the live Maffia experience was just like seeing Tackhead i e a brain pulverisingly intense experience the closest music could get to all out apocalypse and still be endurable but with the addition of a front man who projected this incredible political social paranoia vision which twisted the energy up yet another notch He was actually a very focussed performer he wasn t obviously in need of help to function but he wasn t controlled in the sense of being a cynical fake Watching him bouncing up and down and calling out Operation Passivecation had this amazing propulsive energy There s no way the On U story would have happened without him The track Bastards Rhythm 66 is like finding yourself in the middle of a military installation without security clearance Klaxons layer upon layer of distortion and Stewart shouting This is a restricted area through a megaphone might not be everyone s idea of a good listen but hearing Stewart s voice switching between oppressor and oppressed characters was pretty compelling particularly when coupled with some of William Burroughs words of advice The microchip on the cover of Mark Stewart s third self titled album ON U LP44 released in 1987 continued the theme that all was not rosy in the 20th century brave new cyber world It prefigured the dystopian vision and love hate relationship with technology that characterised techno which had been evolving simultaneously in Detroit and Chicago for two years The album s main themes centre around raw emotions such as love anger lust and alienation Mark Stewart s self titled LP Survival kicks things off with lyrics grabbed from the Grandmaster Flash The Furious Five track of the same name echoing the Maffia member s past incarnation as the Furious Five s backing band Stewarts vocals make mincemeat of the way that the strong survive is

preachiness It wasn t until 1979 that the group made their first proper record under the watchful supportive eyes and ears of reggae vet Dennis Bovell But the Slits due primarily to their interest in incorporating other forms of ethnic music into their mix were leaping beyond what was commonly accepted as punk rock and as a result were no longer seen as a punk band This probably didn t distress them in the least as they were more interested in expanding the barriers of punk rock rather than simply adhering to rules that claimed all punk bands must bash out simplistic guitar rant By 1980 the Slits as a group were beginning to splinter and Ari had found herself as flatmate of the young producer Adrian Sherwood in the midst of gathering together cohorts for his On U Sound record label and live shows For Sherwood having worked with the Slits in their Clash supporting days it was a logical progression along the experimentation axis for her to become one of the primary driving forces in the massed ranks of the New Age Steppers alongside members of other luminaries of the era Rip Rig Panic The Flying Lizards Public Image Limited The Raincoats The Pop Group and Aswad and so help launch the first wave of On U releases Ari s characteristic vocalistic wails and warbles weren t pitch perfect but in the spirit of the era that frankly wasn t the point In retrospect it adds a certain rough and ready charm to the proceedings so much a part of the early On U ethos design By the mid 80s Ari was well on the way to launching herself as a solo artist and consequently the New Age Steppers 1983 album Foundation Steppers ON U LP21 was to

up including Style Scott that Prince Far I brought from Jamaica to the UK to tour that provided the first opportunity for Style and Sherwood to cross paths Many of Creation Rebel s recordings were subsequently issued in the UK through Adrian Sherwood s and Far I s label Hitrun and their original editions are now considered highly collectable In 1980 with the forming of On U Sound Scott was sucked into Adrian s merry band of singers and players forming part of the crew for the new label s first releases and settled there for the duration First outings in his new role saw him providing drums and or percussion for the likes of the New Age Steppers Deadly Headley Playgroup African Head Charge Bim Sherman and the Singers And Players Between 1989 93 as part of the sprawling Gary Clail fronted On U Sound System the influence of Scott s writing credits on tracks such as The Emotional Hooligan and Rumours are clear for all to hear Besides his work for Adrian Sherwood Scott remained a very busy session musician in the first half of the the 1980s and was a key member of the era s top Jamaican rhythm section Roots Radics before the arrival of the digital era after which nothing was quite the same again for reggae musicians From an On U Sound point of view though Style Scott is most well known for being the creative heart of Dub Syndicate a forward looking but backward nodding dub reggae collective usually with Adrian Sherwood along side him at the helm Though Scott was only associated with the group s name from its second album One Way System ON U LP25 he has progressively made it his own ever since Having returned full time to Jamaica
