  • On-U Sound In The Area - Voice Of Authority biography
a la New Age Steppers and developing it one stage further with quirky samples distortion unexpected twists and turns electronic ditties and sudden tape winds all lending their part to making an edgy but fresh listening experience As for those responsible for the music it s a selection of the usual suspects along side Sherwood like Kishi Yamamoto Nick Plytas Mark Stewart Charlie Eskimo Fox Evar Wellington and probably many others Voice Of Authority s only solo releases were a 1984 album Very Big In America Right Now V B I A R N ON U LP35 and an accompanying 12 single both of which were licensed to Cherry Red Records Looking back Cherry Red say of the album Dubbed the first in a series of Science Fiction Dancehall Classics this was actually the last record released under our collaboration with Adrian Sherwood and On U Sound Released originally at a time when Adrian was working with such artists as Depeche Mode it still retains the On U Sound dedication to charting new territory Pay It All Back Volume 1 Spinning the album today it still sounds as off beat and timeless as it did when it first came out As for the giant roasted peanut adorning the cover of the original vinyl edition you ll just have to give it a listen if it doesn t make sense Beyond the album and it s single the only other Voice Of Authority utterance was the track Fuh Fuh on Pay It All Back Volume 1 ON U LP37 the first in the classic series of On U Sound s own promotional compilations first released in 1984 Its writing credit is taken entirely by one Daniel Miller owner of Mute Records with whom Sherwood had close links through the Mark Stewart

  • On-U Sound In The Area - London Underground biography
aspirate saxophones Again just one play is enough to realise their contentious and acute slant on the seamier aspects of dub I m not quite sure where they fit in between African Head Charge and The Dub Syndicate but it s around there somewhere Together these two records are each other s antidotes and in their own right make compulsive listening The delayed debut LP was followed later the same year by what was to be the last album of new material Weighing in at just six tracks Current Affairs Session was classified as a mini LP and given the catalogue number ON U LP28M accordingly In the press release of 20th October 1983 that hailed its arrival and that of a 7 single ON U S3 featuring versions of two of its tracks On U proclaimed Current Affairs Session develops many of the themes and ideas established on the debut LP as well as exploring new ground Material featured on this LP roughly falls into two categories tracks like Rise And Fall and Between The Lines were developed during live performance and although both have been re structured to suit studio work they remain essentially well rehearsed and well loved show songs The Current Affairs Session mini LP Motivation and Animosity on the other hand were recorded in a more spontaneous fashion The overall sound being built up with layers of rhythm and instrumentation relying to a large degree on improvisation and intensive writing and re writing on the spot Most of the work done on these tracks was done in the studio with the tape rolling The rhythms on the new LP incorporate many new ideas and techniques and whilst maintaining traditional London Underground values of hardness and drive etc attempts have been made to free the rhythm section from the strict 4 4 dance tempo and yet retain the all important elements of swing and dance ability Lyrically this LP and its companion seven inch single take much more of a direct hard approach than any previous work so far In short both records have more punch than ever They are different This is London Underground tougher and harder than ever before And with Ade Sherwood at the mixing desk what more do you want It was a bold statement but apart of the Compilation 80 84 CD ON U CD7 released in 1990 that featured both LPs in whole that was the last LU material committed to wax Over time band members drifted off into other projects Martin Frederix went on to form the Fellow Travellers with his brother Tim fellow ex On U stalwart Jeb Loy Nichols and Jeb s wife to be Lorraine Morley Most recently he became a sound engineer for the much coveted Jamiroquai Dan Sheals was also involved in various projects by Michael Wadada s Suns Of Arqa An On U newsletter did report that an On U Sound Extravaganza Live In Tokyo album featuring London Underground was going to be

  • On-U Sound In The Area - Judy Nylon biography
teaming up for a pseudo Tom Waits blues drone called Shopping For Clothes and the softly electronic ballad Joey as well as Red Army which imitates the technique and style of R A F Clever and inventive the work has gentle strength bitter humour and a thoroughly jaundiced world view The Pal Judy LP Her solo album Pal Judy ON U LP16 which she co produced with Adrian Sherwood grafts Snatch s blues poetics and electronic compositional structures onto fairly straightforward rock music and has the audiophile cachet of being eternally elusive perhaps heard only on some late night pirate radio show The result a moody adeptly created and performed record suggestive of Patti Smith smacks of modernised cocktail lounge music in the best tradition of that genre Nylon s vocals are acrid and funny in their scope but the record is stolen by her laconic opiated rendition of Jailhouse Rock Nylon s beat inspired lyrical extrapolations were well suited to Sherwood s expansive sonic collage It s a tremendously seductive record that certainly gave rise to the opinion that Nylon was embarking on an interesting solo career The Carlotta single Nylon is perhaps most famous for an incident that is by now one of the most apocryphal incidents in post modern music As Brian Eno lay convalescing after an accident Nylon brought him a record of 18th century harp music and later while listening to it half awake with the volume down low he discovered the magic of background of ambience or so it is told and retold Sadly apart from one other 7 single Carlotta Pal Judy is all we have to show for Nylon the solo artist Ex cohort Palladin recorded a great record of covers Copy Cats with Johnny Thunders but has also been largely absent
