  • On-U Sound In The Area - Barmy Army biography
by Mark Stewart The Maffia before its appropriation by the army that was barmy However another of the album s rhythms was actually used by Mark Stewart when Devo surfaced as These Things Happen on the artist s Mute album Metatron ON U LP51 Rhythm 56 On Sharp As A Needle Adrian Sherwood employed Rolo then of the Woodentops to play bass guitar And a bizarre factoid for this uniquely English product the man on the keyboards was Ministry s Al Jourgensen fresh from his Sherwood produced Twitch album It should be recorded that prior to the release of The English Disease there was little likelihood of coming across any examples of football tunes which would not be enjoyed by your grandmother at least this was certainly true in England where popular music with a football theme had been strictly confined to the Hip hip hoo ray we re on our way to Wember lee Ed i e Wembley national football stadium in London UK variety In Europe where there seemed to be a preponderance of Bavarian oompah bands and rubber castanets it was even worse I can recall that in attempting to produce a football themed radio programme at the time the best examples came unsurprisingly from Brazil Jamaica and the countries of the African continent So The English Disease album rather than breaking a mould created one Recorded at a time of social paranoia when the Thatcher years Ed Margaret Thatcher UK Prime Minister 1979 1990 were drawing to a close football was under unprecedented scrutiny Identity cards the destruction of the traditional terrace hooliganism the English disease policing standards a return to family values the game was becoming to coin a phrase a political football Sherwood resisted the obvious temptation of an easy shot by turning out a strictly Hammers polemic but focused instead on producing a passionately political sonic documentary where supporters from across the football spectrum joined together in a joyful celebration of the game whilst levelling a number of incisive jibes against the game s establishment both at club and organisational levels As the cool academic Steve Redhead observed in his treatise on post political popular music The End Of The Century Party Instead of trying to represent a locality region or sub culture Sherwood s mix captured a blend of passion pride regionalism and nationalism by deconstructing and then reconstructing the various diverse elements Not representation so much as presenting the unpresentable On listening back to The English Disease the radio and TV samples together with the terrace chants almost in fact do take on an anthropological slant There is little if any difference in the use of such source material as compared to the ethnic and tribal material to be found on the albums of African Head Charge Or is the only difference in the terminology of Marshall McLuhan that football is hot whereas pure dance is cool Bugs On The Wire LP On an On U archive note the fabulously mutant

  • On-U Sound In The Area - Deadly Headley biography
a session or live ensemble player part of the band It was as part of Prince Far I s backing band the Arabs that he came to the UK to tour in the late 70s and on that tour where he met and became involved in Creation Rebel via its lead guitarist Crucial Tony He contributed horn to many of the Creation Rebel tracks of the period staying on in the UK after the Far I gigs were complete As Headley was about fifty years of age in the early late 70s early 80s Adrian Sherwood quite rightly felt that the time was well past when his name should feature as an album s headline artist In the style of the time 35 Years from Alpha was thrown together gathering a batch of rhythms recorded over the previous two years in studios between London and Kingston and although Headley takes the album credit three of the tracks are in fact Bim Sherman vocals The original LP The title track was in fact knocked together from an old Barry White tune and also emerged later as the title track of Dr Pablo s album North Of The River Thames ON U LP30 The Danger was making a concurrent appearance but without the indefinite article with a version on the flip of On U s 10 discoplate debut ON U DP1 credited to the Singers And Players with Bim on vocal Head Charge perversely only in retrospect did not feature Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah of African Head Charge but did have Sherwood as the Prisoner on particularly freeform Jew s harp The second of the Bim Sherman tunes Without A Love Like Yours was a version of Devious Woman Rhythm 11 whilst as the title implies Two From Alpha found Headley s old school friend Rico Rodriguez joining him on the track with a vintage trombone contribution Another Satta is exactly that a fine version of a classic reggae tune and rhythm Rhythm 12 One specifically unusual attribute of the original vinyl release of 35 Years From Alpha was the uncredited sleeve notes from the young Sherwood in fact so unusual it s worth reprinting his words here Alpha is the name of a Roman Catholic school in Kingston Jamaica Over the years Alpha has produced so many legendary musicians and singers Headley Bennett attended the Alpha School up to the age of fifteen and despite a seven year semi professional existence in Canada he has been playing music professionally ever since Headley has played on far too many recording sessions to possibly begin to mention Sessions for virtually every Jamaican artist and producer you may know of He was at one time a full time employee of a certain producer and studio owner for which requiring of him to simply blow on demand he received a none too awe inspiring wage Headley can in no way be called a capitalist or a politician All he does is play a saxophone He has

  • On-U Sound In The Area - Missing Brazilians biography
R people down at Cherry Red were used to dealing with some pretty weird stuff but this was the on the other side of bizarre Whether this was a result of the mix of musicians the challenge of what was then new and strange studio technology or more likely the judicious sampling of more ethereal substances can only be conjecture for these days even Sherwood himself can find no rational explanation for the appearance of this music except to profess he has always had a fondness for built in distortion The density of the sound almost pushed disc cutting limiters out of function Even the name of the collaboration The Missing Brazilians only came forth on the spur of the moment Ed at the suggestion of Steve Barker himself in the small hours after a long session finalising the album mixdown Shara Nelson in the mid 1990s Of course none of the participants were actually Brazilian but in a sense I suppose most of them were missing Sherwood appeared as The Prisoner the divas were doubled as Annie Anxiety aka Little Annie and Shara Nelson each took a vocal track in from the undergrowth came members of African Head Charge and Maffia Creation Rebel and all were joined on keyboards by the classically trained Kishi Yamamoto and that man about North London Nick Hummus Mouse Plytas Pressed up first time on CD and mastered from the original mixdown in 1998 Warzone can at last be heard as it was conceived and played in the north and east of London So my advice is Panic But do not be frightened Your ears are naturally made to take in a much bigger wattage They do not need to be fused Just check Does all that round edged soft focused smooth and clean

same year ON U DP6 featuring versions of both Murder with dub outing and Stand Firm the latter of which was to be sampled for the remix of Prince Far I s Water The Garden for 1988 s Volume 2 of Pay It All Back ON U LP42 Both tunes were featured on the album and are excellent examples of Bonjo s roots chanting style which he developed and refined to such excellent effect within the touring form of African Head Charge Murder discoplate Background When Bonjo s parents sent for him to come to England he ran away into the hills His brothers were sent to fetch the errant youth and he finally arrived in London in the late sixties His first real encounter with the music business was as a roadie for Dandy Livingstone and his band who were experiencing some chart success on the back of the skinhead connection with tunes like Reggae In Your Jeggae No one knew of Bonjo s percussion skills which only came to light one night when the band s conga player failed to turn up for a gig and Bonjo stepped in Some jealous encounters ensued but the positive result was that Bonjo decided to invest in a drum Later on Bonjo was invited and accepted an invitation from Clem Curtis to join the Foundations who were still enjoying touring success on the back of their 1968 monster hit Build Me A Buttercup Bonjo really enjoyed the trappings of this exposure to an adoring public In those days I was wild Bonjo s reintroduction to playing the music of his heritage came via Charlie Eskimo Fox who played in both UK reggae fusion outfit Freedom Fighter and the UK JA band Creation Rebel Adrian Sherwood remembers being introduced to Bonjo by
