in the post for stylish dressing with a small wardrobe But what do you do when the heat is so oppressive that you can t wear a scarf jacket or a cardigan And maybe it s even too hot for pants Now I know the answer You switch to the 1 piece rule Wear a dress It looks polished and put together Most years in the spring I would have good intentions of wearing cute dresses but by summer I would default to more casual shorts or capris This summer I had no other choice but to wear my skirts and dresses Sure it looks like I m dressed for date night when I go to Target but that s not a bad thing I almost bought some shorts this week but when I tried them on I thought they were too casual I ll just finish the summer with what I already have One tip to feeling comfortable wearing dresses is to feel comfortable in your shoes If your shoes have little plastic heels that make you feel wobbly when you walk you won t wear them My shoes have to feel good to walk in so I have one comfortable cute pair of sandals that go with everything Wearing a dress is easy It s one piece basically a long shirt and you re not even wearing pants For winter I ll pair them with my boots instead of sandals and add a cardigan Any dress lovers out there And for the record which one did you think was a lie 128 Comments Remove to Improve They say a can of paint is the cheapest way to make a big impact on a room and they may be right but I think removing things can be even more dramatic You knew the brick arches were coming down right In addition to being in the way they blocked all the light in the back part of the room When we agreed to buy this house I made Doug swear to these two conditions 1 We would keep the original double oven 2 The brick arches were coming down The brick arches came down on the very first day The wet bar in the background with the black cushioned vinyl counter came down on the second day An amazing difference When you declutter a room always remove the biggest bulkiest item that needs to go first the old TV that no longer works the ugly couch unused exercise equipment it s astounding how the brand new open space will make the room feel Even though most home improvements and decor will focus on adding things to your home which can cost a lot of money taking stuff out of your home will give you as much thrill as bringing in something new with more impact FOR FREE It s usually better to remove something bad than try to decorate around it The only hold up is making a few phone

year 32 Comments Our First House the Before Pictures I have a makeover motto that keeps me from backing down from a challenge The worse the Before picture the better the makeover Now dear readers I present to you my newest makeover challenge my first house It s a classy fixer upper previously owned for forty years by Jack and Minnie who valued strong quality and regular maintenance This 70 s classic ranch house was tastefully decorated in all the finishing touches of the decade Dark wood paneling Harvest gold kitchen sink counters and stove A wet bar no make that a sunken wet bar with black cushioned vinyl counter top Read more 123 Comments How to Achieve Uncluttered Without Going Bare Cold or Minimal As we walked into this home where we stayed in Venice I knew it held a great lesson for achieving the balance of creating a peaceful uncluttered space but not going so far as to make it feel cold or stark This was a house full of treasures and interesting things to look at The study held walls full of books fabric on the walls a portrait and architectural drawings a fireplace mirrors drapes flowers a desk bookcases a rug and two couches one floral It was so inviting and somehow even though the room was full I didn t feel overwhelmed like I sometimes do in a crowded space If you picture a pendulum where on one side you have completely uncluttered some people feel it is too impersonal cold and boring and then on the other side you have huge collections of tchotchkes deals and stacks of personal mementos most people desire to be somewhere in the middle There is more than one way to accomplish balance but this room had a trick for it A shortcut if you will All the horizontal spaces are clear Your eyes have several spaces to rest The coffee table is empty The desk has only a lamp and my computer The side tables support lamps but that s it The chairs don t have piles It s ready for you to make good use of the room To follow this approach in your home Clear the bed in your bedroom putting away your clean laundry Clear off your desk in the office putting the stack of papers in a drawer or in a tote bag Take those things the projects in progress off your dining table and put them back where they should go Keep one kitchen counter free of stuff like papers kitchen appliances and canisters Remove the clutter from your coffee table taking the remotes and magazines and setting them aside in a basket Clean off the top of your dryer in the laundry room so you have a place to fold clothes If it seems unrealistic to clear off every horizontal surface clear the main surface in each room Your nightstand might have a stack of library books on it but at least

of things and then need them later but as it is I have too many things and most of them are in storage in our crawl space under the house What would you suggest for our situation By the way we have two children 9 and 3 with very small full bedrooms Thanks I think this topic is so significant Brittney kindly allowed me to open it up for discussion and I am eager to hear what you have to say Here are my thoughts I tend to question things when I purchase them Is this something I really want or need Am I being a good steward in buying this Once I no longer need something I feel like it has served its purpose and can be freely given away Of all the things I ve ever given away or donated over the years I ve only wanted two things back and they weren t costly to replace It is good stewardship for someone to be using it even if that person isn t you You can bless someone in need with your excess Many things do not store or age well so it s better for someone to use them before they become unusable in storage Without a vast amount of time and motive you can only repurpose a few things I saved two pairs of pants from the last twenty items of clothing Doug gave away with plans to make something from them Realistically I won t have time to do more than that so there is no reason for me to keep and store the rest I m sure there will be more clothes in the future Ultimately for me I think simplifying has made me a better steward Since I ve been trying to narrow my possessions down to what I truly want or need I can better use what I have and I don t buy as many new things What are your thoughts Do you find it hard to give something away because you might need it later What s worth keeping Is there anything you regret giving away What do you suggest 24 Comments Behind the Blog It s been a while since I ve written about my daily life When I started Small Notebook earlier this year I thought it was going to be my personal blog A few months later as it gained readership I was glad to transition to reader focused articles and I wrote less about our happenings If people spend five minutes of their day reading an article here then I want it to be something helpful or inspiring instead of something about me Sometimes when I read blogs though I wish I could know a little more about the person writing it I want to be able to see who they are and a little about what their life is like So here s my life right now I don t have a lot of pictures

in a row 5 well spent She will start kindergarten in a couple of months and we ll have plenty of time for plans and activities then I write a little about parenting at AlphaMom and I recently wrote about Sail into Summer with Ice Cube Boats a summertime craft you won t have to keep Claiming Small Victories When your child is tired and hungry on the way home it s a small victory to find the bag of dry cereal you left in the car three weeks earlier Win Affirm Your Child s Heart Through Play Time Like one friend told me when you talk to your son He s not your little boy he s your big boy Are your summer plans big and exciting or relaxed and low key or maybe both 38 Comments House Hunting Nothing says Buy this one like staging a house with eleven dying roses and a half eaten banana I wish I could show you the photos of the houses we looked at especially the one with a safari theme I thought house hunting was going to be fun like shopping for shoes I really did I thought we would look at a few good houses and then pick the best one for us or at least the one with the best potential We ve been renting for so long and it s been good for us but the cost to rent is going up compared to the falling prices of homes for sale Since we plan to be in this area for at least a couple of years we think it will be wise to buy this time We re looking in the fixer upper price range I was eager to find my home makeover Before ready to look beyond wrong color choices and outdated kitchens I paid no attention to the green carpet in the bathrooms I knew to overlook anything that was a cosmetic issue and that everything looks better with a fresh coat of paint Photos of the houses in the listings were average They ll look better in person Doug told me No one takes good photos of real estate He was wrong the pictures looked better The pixelated images hid the nicotine stains plus the smell that lingered on our hair and clothes long after we left I counted five cat carriers at one house There was no hope for the homes with awkward floor plans and absent neighbors I ran out of one house and headed for the truck while Doug and our realtor stood inside the house with no windows I ve never seen so much wallpaper the realtor commented at one point House hunting is like dating but not in a fun healthy style more like the kind of dating that flips your feelings between hope and anxiety and leaves you waiting by the phone At least when I was in college I knew to date a guy for who he was

and possibly oats The long list unsafe ingredients The significance of the long list is that if you are kind enough to cook for us I will want to know the recipe If one of the foods is pre packaged then I will ask to read the ingredients list even if you ve already looked to make sure it doesn t contain wheat Please don t take my caution personally It s just that I m not sure if you will recognize that barley malt or caramel coloring for example contain gluten I need to check the list of ingredients myself because it s not worth the risk Good news Foods that are ok rice corn quinoa buckwheat potatoes millet and more not to mention fresh fruits vegetables meat and dairy Cooking without wheat Gluten free bread just won t taste the same no matter how you bake it Good recipes are available to try but they take practice The best strategy for someone inexperienced is to choose familiar appealing foods that are already gluten free such as roasted chicken and vegetables or grilled fish with rice Use salt and pepper instead of seasoning mixes just to be safe What I m most nervous about is cross contamination that somehow a bread crumb or a tiny bit of flour will accidently mix in with the food Please be careful about your spoons cutting boards and other cooking equipment to make sure they don t get mixed up in the cooking process A small amount matters a great deal to stay healthy Resources These are not the medical websites These are the gluten free food blogs that make me cry into my keyboard almost every time because I m so relieved to have found them Gluten Free Girl Karina s Kitchen And every now and then when I start to worry or wonder if this is going to be ok I read this blog and am cheered by her young positive and now healthy outlook Aprovechar Honestly being gluten free is like being in a special club People you don t even know will share their knowledge so that you can avoid what they went through It wasn t Lane s pediatrician who identified her intolerance to gluten it was an online friend who recognized the reason for Lane s low weight and picky eating Once we switched to a gluten free diet Lane s growth rate doubled One final word 97 of people who have celiac don t even know it Last week my husband Doug realized that he is intolerant to gluten too If you re having health troubles but don t know why try removing gluten or other foods from your diet for a while and see if it helps For those of you who are well versed in special diets is there anything you want to share or add Anything we need to know And if you have any questions about it feel free to ask Related

she didn t like hats But that obviously wasn t the problem December 2007 I made a little crochet bird The color was an unfortunate grey Doug called it a lump of coal I decluttered it In better crochet news Molly posted a tutorial for how to crochet a metal leaf I also love her burlap bird Leaf and pear from A Foothill Home Companion I m not sure I ll ever finish the afghan I think I m a quitter and I m ok with that Do you have any unfinished projects 32 Comments Find Contentment Where You Are Right Now Photo by tanakawho I ve felt this way before and I know others have too Anna asked My question is how do you find contentment I am newly married and my husband and I are just starting out we re barely 23 and we don t have much or much money to get more stuff I find myself always feeling glum because my older siblings both in their 30s have the nice house the nice car the nice furniture that I can t have I hope someday to own a comfortable but small home that people feel welcome and happy in but I know I won t even be happy with that unless I learn to be happy with what we have NOW however little that may be Do you have any tips for us P S we are both Christians also How I Learned About Contentment When I was in college I didn t date Some of my friends from church declared they were date fasting choosing not to date I wasn t date fasting my problem was that no one was asking For years It was hard to let go of the idea of getting married right after school During my senior year I had to learn about contentment It wasn t easy and there were a lot of tears involved I spent time reading my Bible and praying about it I needed to learn that if I didn t have a husband then God would take care of me And here is what happened once I grew content being single I became confident being single When I started dating Doug one of the reasons he was interested in me was because I was content in my circumstances and not looking to him to solve my problems The same holds true for houses Buying a house does not solve problems It doesn t give you more friends it doesn t give you more free time and it certainly doesn t give you more money at least in the short term and possibly the long term too Once you find contentment where you live you have to work to keep it Stay Content Don t watch too much HGTV Don t spend Sunday afternoons driving around looking at nice houses Don t keep catalogs around Don t underestimate the stress of buying and selling a house Don
