pit bulls and they are all Terrified of ants LOl So much for the Pit Bull Killer Dog Myths I have to be careful what I use because they have the run of the house and often are my vacuum cleaners when something drops to the kitchen floor My mother told me about the Corn Meal and it does work as long as you can keep the Bully s from blowing it away with their noses lol This has been by far the best remedy I have used I did use the smash and destroy method first but it scared the dogs Kyle Caster says September 10 2011 at 10 51 am Thanks Denise I find your comment to be the most useful I too hate ants and it s interesting to see there s more people who feel the same way Keep up the good and productive work Lee says April 21 2010 at 11 15 am I had a case where the ants were coming in from behind a cabinet I put clear packing tape over the entrance I took it down over the winter and they did not try to come back the next year I also used the sprinkled borax on a doorway with some success it did take a little while to take effect Lee s last post If you register your site for free at Kait Palmer says April 21 2010 at 12 42 pm Great list I ve used the cornstarch one too and that refrig and also in the track of my glass slider doors Tina RideOnToys says April 21 2010 at 1 23 pm What great tips that I never knew about I just buy over the counter ant traps but really don t like to have them laying around So glad to have more tricks up my sleeve Tina RideOnToys s last post The Batman Power Wheels Will Keep Your Little Crime Fighters Busy se7en says April 21 2010 at 1 33 pm We have a heap of ants that come out when it rains If it rains really hard they vanish back into the walls If it is dry they stay indoors but when it is misty or a light drizzle they come out in their bazillions We don t mind them we don t really see them and they never come into the house But why don t they like a gentle spattering of rain I would love to know Is it some sort of ant thing se7en s last post The Week That Was 2 42 pathutch says March 25 2011 at 4 22 pm I had ants that would come and go like that and it turned out that thousands of them were building nests in my foam roofing insulation I had to have all the insulation replaced That was the most expensive ant hill I ve ever seen Lisa Mom s Green Shopping List says April 21 2010 at 5 52 pm This is the first year we have had ants My husband went out and bought some of those icky ant traps which I wasn t very happy about Thankfully now I have some natural alternatives to try first Lisa Mom s Green Shopping List s last post What Are Your Earth Day Resolutions Jennifer says April 21 2010 at 6 38 pm I have found one of the best things is dried bay leaves put in cupboards just near where the ants are coming in etc The bonus is the nice smell I leave a couple of leaves in the pantry and have never been bothered with ants since Jenn says April 21 2010 at 8 31 pm SALT Ants generally invade the kitchen and living room right before it rains Ants usually won t cross a salt barrier not sure why This and vinegar have worked REALLY well for me but I m glad to have the cinnamon and cornstarch back up plan Great post Thanks Jenn s last post Taking a Few Sick Days Andrea thetraintocrazy com says April 21 2010 at 8 03 pm Perfect timing This past week I ve had 5 10 ants invade a day I vacuum and mop after every meal and snack w vinegar and while it seems to be helping they keep coming I m going to try garlic Junn says April 22 2010 at 1 15 am Thank you thank you I had been searching for ways to get rid of ants but too lazy to do the extensive searching on google This might save me yet I don t want to use the powder for killing ants due to have an inquisitive toddler on hand Rana says April 22 2010 at 7 02 am I ve used baby powder and that has gotten rid of them before too I don t know what it is about it but they don t like it Rana s last post Great Outdoor Challenge Backyards and Playgrounds mamie says April 22 2010 at 9 36 am I can vouch for the cornstarch and the baby powder Here in South Texas our ants sting and many children are allergic to the stings Worst case treat stings with unseasoned meat tenderizer I have seen nasty swelling on little feet go down in minutes I make a paste and smear it on tracy coville says June 19 2011 at 10 08 pm use a wet aspirin to rub on ant bites it will take away swelling and pain Try ginger ants hate it cinnamon works well too Vicki R says April 22 2010 at 8 04 pm Not sure if it s been mentioned but my mom swears by this remedy mix a batch of Borax honey together then just leave it out for them to come eat it They eat it take it back to their nest it kills all of them It worked for a bit for us but eventually they just kept coming back but they would always go to the bowl of Borax honey So at least it contained them Marcy Tate says April 23 2010 at 7 49 am Wow baby powder great idea I am going to test it out here and see if it works for me too Thanks for the other great ideas like salt borax and cornstarch Thanks for sharing Robbie Going Green Mama says April 23 2010 at 8 58 pm Cayenne pepper Robbie Going Green Mama s last post In the wake of our Great TV Rebellion carol says July 9 2011 at 7 19 am hasn t worked for me they just crawl through it is my pepper too old maybe Sofia s Ideas says April 24 2010 at 2 30 pm Thank you so much for this very timely post I live in South Florida where ants are a constant nuisance I was wondering though if you have any suggestions for natural solutions to FIRE ants Sofia s Ideas s last post Happy Earth Day 2010 Kyle says July 30 2011 at 4 59 am My dad taught me this one years ago and its always worked w fire ants FIRST stir up the mound and get them running around THEN sprinkle INSTANT grits generously over around whatever fire ant mound you see and in a few days the mound will become inactive I don t know if they all die but when you come back a few days later and stir the mound again there are no more ants in residence Good luck Kyle says July 30 2011 at 5 01 am sorry it s always worked careless typo Sofia s Ideas says August 4 2011 at 5 50 am Thanks Kyle I appreciate you taking the time My parents used grits on black ants when we lived on Long Island I remember helping them when I was growing up I had no idea they worked on fire ants too From what I understood they are virtually indestructable We ended up calling the exterminator but whatever they used was a temporary solution as they always return if the queen remains Sofia s Ideas s last post this moment Beth says April 24 2010 at 3 54 pm We have had great success getting rid of ants by using baby powder the kind WITH talc The ants usually clear up about 3 days after we sprinkle it around the edges of the counters and they re gone for the rest of the summer Kirsty Abu Dhabi says April 25 2010 at 8 24 am This is perfect timing for me my girls bedroom has been invaded and nothing seemed to be getting rid of them will start trying out this list Thanks Kirsty Abu Dhabi s last post Early morning light Abu Dhabi Maternity Photographer from the desk of me says April 25 2010 at 3 26 pm this was super helpful thanks so much as summer quickly approaches i was beginning to cringe knowing that my little black 6 legged buddies would be back i have tried vinegar and it works but i hate the smell i am definitely going to try cinnamon and mint thanks again Elisa blissfulE says April 25 2010 at 10 34 pm Love these ideas for when I manage to find where they are making their entrance which can be quite difficult I have fought ants on four continents now and keeping everything clean with vinegar works well for us I ran our of white vinegar and tried apple cider vinegar ACV one time it attracted even more ants So I stick with plain white vinegar these days Elisa blissfulE s last post ode to eatmeal angelvalerie says April 26 2010 at 3 57 am I have always used any talcum powder sprinkle around their roadway and leave it there a few days soon no more ants and you don t see them for a long time afterwards I have used this is several cities and 2 countries hot and temperate always works angelvalerie s last post dreaming your dreams Julia says April 26 2010 at 9 28 am Found this via simple mom and it is just what I need Thanks for these remedies I m off to battle now Joy Marshall says April 29 2010 at 9 46 pm I take the caps from 2 liter bottles of soda fill them with corn meal and add a wee bit of honey in the center The ants take the corn meal back to the queen and there is no more reproduction The honey is a lure This takes time but it is safe if you have animals at home which we do Over time it is a wonderful cure Renee Wyatt says April 30 2010 at 9 51 am I have heard that ants can not digest cornmeal They will take it back to their nest and after they feast on it they will die However I saw several responses in the discussion that mentioned cornstarch Does anyone know if its cornmeal or cornstarch Or both Thanks Tracy says May 23 2010 at 10 27 am Borax and a little icing sugar mixed in Works every time Kim House Cleaning Howtos says June 7 2010 at 6 59 am I came to your site to look at your chocolate syrup recipe and have had an enjoyable browse Really like the philosophy that shines through here This year I did something new about the ants that arrive with each spring in our second story apartment Nothing If they were completely in my way I brushed them aside but other than that I just let the little dudes hang out No one got hurt no one died And I didn t notice any more ants than when I sprayed like mad with gosh knows what in previous years Living insect free is not a healthy goal living pesticide free is Kim House Cleaning Howtos s last post Hand Washing Clothes How to Wash by Hand Sivje Parish says June 20 2010 at 11 14 am I have not found anything that works but I have not tried anything on your list so I plan to try them all Thank you so much Millaje says July 15 2010 at 10 16 am Cinnamon works amazing sprinkle it over the anthill or wherever you see them congregating Works well in conjunction with the cinnamon sticks in the windows and doorways Cheryl says September 3 2010 at 10 25 pm Does anyone know how to get rid of CARPENTER ANTS They are terrible up here in Alaska They come inside and make tunnels through the walls Boo says November 14 2010 at 2 10 am I have used bay leaves I crush them They don t like the smell or something and it deters them Sarah says March 28 2011 at 1 58 am I found that by hanging several hummingbird feeders in the trees around my home that the ants crawl up to the feeders rather than into my house The first year I thought it was coincidental but I have lived in my home for almost three years and never a single ant in the house Every time I fill up the feeders I have to wash out the ants but Id rather them in there than on my kitchen counter Try it this summer and see if it works for you Dava says April 27 2011 at 6 57 am Thanks for the tips Jen Becoming Greener says May 15 2011 at 10 25 am Apparently ants hate Mrs Meyer s Clean Day All Purpose cleaner too Has lavender in it plus made from botanicals I have sprayed it in a panic and it does kill on contact When I sprayed it on the counters and left it a while before wiping it up it also kept them from returning for a while I hate killing ants but if they d just stay outdoors where they belong I d leave them alone I m trying the peppermint next since it is growing like wild in our garden and I can even transplant it to the place where I am seeing the outdoor colonies There are def fewer of them now that we are seeing indoors and the traditional liquid bait my husband tried is not working as well These ants seem to be too smart for that I m getting itchy now just thinking about ants Cyndie says May 28 2011 at 11 36 am I mix a few tablespoons of liquid dish washing detergent any brand for hand washing dishes and about 16 ounces of water and keep it in a spray bottle on the counter I use that for an instant ant killer It is easier to spray a bunch and then clean them up rather than running for a paper towel to smash each individual ant Thanks for all these great suggestions I am going to try the borax and honey where they are coming in my front door I love your website I read your words of wisdom and soak up the inspiration regularly Emilie says May 30 2011 at 12 19 am I just wanted to say a HUGE THANK YOU to whoever it was that mentioned using CORNSTARCH It worked like a charm I ve never used a natural method before For the first time last year I had a huge infestation of little black ants and they didn t respond at all to the poison traps they were around most of the summer This summer they came back with a vengence They were everywhere I awoke with them crawling on me that s how bad it got This went on for over a month I sprinkled the cornstarch everywhere I saw them coming out and they were gone within a few weeks THANK YOU AND HOORAY FOR CORNSTARCH Dennis Grover says June 17 2011 at 8 19 am USE SSS SKIN SO SOFT BATH OIL ANTS AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE IF YOU SPRAY THE ONES YOU SEE IT KILLS ON CONTACT RUB SOME ON OUTSIDE OF GARBAGE PAILS ANTS WILL NOT CLIMB THEM TO GET TO GARBAGE MAKE A SPRAY OR USE FULL STRENGH TO USE ALONG BASEBOARDS PETS i HAVE 2 CATS don t seem to mind the woodsy smell BORAX TALC AND CORNSTARCH WORK ALSO EVEN WITH COCKROACHES AND PALMETTO BUGS Anthony Galati says June 20 2011 at 12 52 pm I may be the only person on this page that feels this way but I actually like ants A lot of people don t realize how beneficial the little critters are to plants all over the world as they do things like ingest parasites off of them when they drink the dew in the morning etc Small dark ants have been coming into my kitchen and instead of killing them I have used a small hand held Micro Vac to suck them up and bring outside away from the house I tried cinnamon powder as well as cinnamon oil but it didn t turn them away What did work for me though was smearing lemon juice around the area where they were coming

  • The Freedom of Routines - Small Notebook
I give my daughter the feather duster and some instructions then it takes longer about three hours I take breaks between jobs and take care of them or set them up with their next activity I try to save precious nap time for something I can do while sitting quietly like reading a book or spending time on the computer which is really hard to do when they re awake I find if I m up busy and working around the house they feel like I m still with them even if I m not involved in what they re doing Sandy Your Life Organized says March 26 2010 at 9 16 am I agree with you it is so nice to have the ability to take a day off here and there I don t have a routine right now because we just moved but when everything is in its place and you keep up everyday you can skip a day are so and not have to worry Hope you have a wonderful weekend Our Lives says March 26 2010 at 10 17 am Oh I forgot to answer your questions Sensible routines brings freedom complicated routines brings struggles Jenny Our Lives s last post Tackle it Tuesday Spice Cabinet Our Lives says March 26 2010 at 10 44 am Grammar errors Sensible routines bring freedom complicated ones bring struggles Jenny Thank you Meredith Blogging is my extending ESL course Our Lives s last post Tackle it Tuesday Spice Cabinet Meredith from Penelope Loves Lists says March 26 2010 at 10 29 am I love this post I got very sick suddenly yesterday and wasn t able to get to 2 routine housekeeping items on my list Instead of being upset about it I was able to rest easy in the fact that my routines enable me to know that I wasn t behind in my cleaning and missing one day wasn t going to be a big deal Jenny is right simple routines bring freedom complicated ones bring struggles Meredith from Penelope Loves Lists s last post How This Blogger Stays Organized meet Jules from Pancakes French Fries Michelle says March 26 2010 at 10 04 am Can I answer BOTH I like a routine but am so bad about sticking to them I can t seem to get a grip on my home and it s very frustrating But you wrote in this post that you take 2 hours every Monday to just get it over with and I m thinking that I need to adopt that attitude Because I am not good at spreading it out over time either And really two hours once a week not bad Thanks for sharing this it s given me HOPE Rachel says March 27 2010 at 10 43 am When I tried to spread it out during the week I would usually do jobs at the beginning of the week but I always skipped jobs on Wednesday Thursday and Friday I could not get motivated on those days The two hours doesn t include picking up or laundry or dishes which I consider to be daily life maintenance instead focused cleaning time Karen S says March 26 2010 at 10 29 am I did no house cleaning this week until today We have had a lazy week and that s ok Sometimes I want a very detailed plan but most of the time my routines have become such a habit that the house does not have to be cleaned every day Just a quick pick up Melissa says March 26 2010 at 10 33 am I have a few routines that I stick to but the rest no matter how hard I try they fall apart So I have been trying to go with the flow and work on what I can when I can Em says March 26 2010 at 10 46 am I do far better when I follow my routines But I m not real good at sticking to them or I follow my bad routines a lot more easily I m slowly learning and unlearning how to make my day run a lot more smoothly and use every minute efficiently but still have time for me Hillary says March 26 2010 at 11 07 am I love the freedom of routines and I also love to through routines out the window so often Then I get frustrated and hop back on I guess that in and of itself is a routine Since we homeschool and work for ourselves our routine is completely up to us which can be a good and a challenging thing Megan SortaCrunchy says March 26 2010 at 1 07 pm I walk the line between really REALLY needing routines and really REALLY needing flexibility Honestly I wish I were solidly one or the other I love my freedom but I have this internal voice that is often so huffy and put out with me and my unwillingness to stick to the plan And when I am sticking to the plan rather quite nicely the free spirit within gets exasperated Where I have the biggest struggle is embracing freedom from routine is when I need to compromise my routines for the purpose of ministering to others For example we love to have people over for dinner and conversation but we also love to have our girls in bed by 8 PM I struggle with getting all antsy and twitchy when people stay later than bedtime but I know in my heart that practicing hospitality should take precedence over my schedule Megan SortaCrunchy s last post Perspective Vanessa says March 26 2010 at 12 09 pm I love the idea of routines but implementing them has been hard for me I know they would keep me on track and help me get a lot more done and make me feel better probably but keeping up with them even if they re simple is

homemade before but I ve thought about it Now I m not so sure I want to Those are funny stories Thanks for the tip on the vinegar I may try that but glad to know what type to use Our Lives says March 22 2010 at 10 01 am I was so gun ho on the homemade cleaners last year I did the dish liquid soap and I loved it except I found out that the cost of the ingredients I was using were way over what I have budgeted for So out went the soap and now that we stop using the dish washer to see if we can actually save some money by washing dishes by hand I am now just stick with the home made laundry detergent And the worms under the sink I was almost there but the family would not go close to the sink so that was out of the picture as well Deedee says April 12 2010 at 5 43 pm I just recently read somewhere that it actually saves water to use the dishwasher vs hand washing your dishes Apparently quite a big difference So we have been using our dishwasher an energy efficient model less than 2 years old again Only running it when it is totally full to be as efficient as possible But I do worry about that dishwasher soap Wonder if there is something else more natural that would work in the dishwasher Donna says March 22 2010 at 10 27 am When you live in small studio apartments as I often have you just don t need so many things So imagine my frustration as I tried to do the right thing with recycling but struggled to find enough space for 3 containers to do my part for recycling Vanessa says March 22 2010 at 10 29 am Ha I never knew it was apple cider vinegar My husband jokes that he loves when my hair smells like salad dressing Megan SortaCrunchy says March 22 2010 at 12 04 pm Oh Oh the stories I could tell from my earliest days of cloth diapering Oh my I ll refrain though to protect the innocent and the weak There was some bad though BAD Megan SortaCrunchy s last post You Tell Me What s your dream mamie says March 22 2010 at 11 38 am I have to be careful about these sort of things too My very educated parents still think all green thinking is Hippy I realize that as a military family in 1967 they are sensitive but Yes Mom no shampoo doesn t mean we are moving to a commune It cracks me up They are so green they crunch just being out on the ranch with hanging dry the laundry and canning food turning off lights and old fashioned frugality Michelle says March 22 2010 at 12 16 pm I recently started making my own deoderant which is great until my husband mentions it to people like his parents who look at me like I m crazy I d love for you to do a post on the recipes that you came up with for natural shampoo conditioner and any other beauty care products I ve tried a few and they haven t worked for me but I m on the lookout for ones that will work for me Sherrie says March 22 2010 at 5 54 pm I LOVED both this post and your post about being an Earth Club dropout so me too My first thoughts when I saw this one were Well at least the hawk wasn t enjoying her egg laying chickens for lunch Followed quickly by Oh no was it an egg laying chicken Poor girl Thanks for sharing your nasty photo and your real life experiences with us Cori says March 22 2010 at 7 35 pm akward the first time our sitter wiped DD s 2 year old bum in the bathroom and DD insisted on a cloth wiper What is she asking for Cori s last post Meadowbrook Jess OpenlyBalanced says March 23 2010 at 3 01 am I love it The worms are so going to be me someday This month it was the dairy products I m not much of a dairy eater and I found myself with a fridge full of kefir clabbered milk and whey The dogs have really enjoyed my experiments And my addition to Emily s four words not to be mentioned in public menstrual cup Jess OpenlyBalanced s last post The Naturalistic Fallacy Erin says March 23 2010 at 8 18 am The first time we hosted my husband s large extended family for Thanksgiving a hawk came to visit We we oohing and ahhing until we noticed it had something in its claw and proceeded to tear it to shreds before our very eyes Nothing beats real life NG carnage on Thanksgiving It was quite a spectacle and very similar to your experience Too funny Erin s last post Please Don t Flee My Blog What Social Justice Means to Me Kait Palmer says March 23 2010 at 9 53 am Hah all these stories are great I ve got some interesting ones regarding when I switched from tampons to the Diva Cup but those are better left untold online Let s just say it takes awhile to get used to it Kait Palmer s last post Condensing Jackie Lee says March 23 2010 at 11 05 am What a funny post I love the worm conversation funny thing that would be a normal conversation around here We also got plenty of strange looks when we talked about cloth diapering Thanks for the smile Jackie Lee s last post Living the Law of Attraction and Parenting With It Too Tara says March 23 2010 at 12 37 pm Three words cloth toilet paper I love it now but it wasn t without interesting conversations and some learning
