    members in managing their library accounts Members are responsible for ensuring that the contact information on file is accurate Members can select a preferred method of notification but keep in mind that not all notices are available by all notification methods The library may attempt to contact you to alert you to a problem with a returned item or a problem with your account Additionally the library sends a variety of courtesy reminders The following chart summarizes the types of notices routinely generated by the library Notice Type Description Notification Method Hold Notices Sent when a hold becomes available members have 7 days to pick up the hold Email Telephone or Text Courtesy Reminder Notices Reminder of an upcoming due date sent 3 days prior to due date Members are responsible for returning items on time even if they do not receive a notice Email Telephone or Text Overdue Notices Reminder of overdue items sent 3 days and 21 days after due date Members are responsible for returning items on time even if they do not receive a notice Email Telephone or Text Replacement Bill Alert that an item on your account is considered lost or damaged sent 42 days after due date or upon return of a damaged item U S Mail Statement of Account Summary statement of outstanding fines fees sent periodically Email TIP Members who use a web based email service such as Yahoo Gmail or Hotmail may experience sporadic difficulties in receiving library notices sent via email these notices are generated in batch and some web based email engines treat the messages as spam Adding the email address smpl smgov net to your email contact list often overcomes this issue Recovery Notification Members who do not respond to overdue or billing notices will be referred to

    circumstances members may be given the option of purchasing an identical replacement of the item in lieu of a replacement fee but the processing fee will still be charged The library will also charge a replacement fee and processing fee for any item that is returned in a damaged state that requires its withdrawal from the collection Items with damage not requiring withdrawal may incur charges for restoration to an appropriate condition Examples of such damage include removal of labels writing on pages tearing of pages and removal of cover art from AV materials Please refer to the section on Caring for Library Materials for guidance on the proper care of borrowed items Materials returned with missing pieces cannot be circulated and therefore cannot be checked in until complete Overdue fines may apply Collection Agency Fees The Library employs the services of Unique National Collections UNC to assist in the recovery of materials that are designated as long overdue Patrons will be assessed a 10 referral fee if their account is referred to UNC The table below summarizes the steps that the library takes to encourage the prompt return of materials Days Overdue Action 7 days overdue The library sends a courtesy overdue notice see Library Notices for details 21 days overdue The library sends a courtesy overdue notice see Library Notices for details 42 days overdue Item is considered lost The library mails a printed bill for any such items 56 days overdue Members who fail to reconcile long overdue materials by either returning the material or paying the designated replacement costs will be referred to Unique National Collections UNC A 10 service fee will be added to any account referred to UNC UNC will attempt to reach the patron first by letter and then by telephone urging you

    the next available PC or reserve a station for a later time that day The Reservation Station will attempt to book a 60 minute session subject to workstation availability and the amount of Internet time you have already used that day The PC Reservation software will not allow you to reserve time extending to after the Library closes Depending on the time you will either be offered a shorter reservations or denied a reservation altogether The system will establish a reservation for a specific PC and time You will have the option to print a receipt that summarizes the reservation details When requesting a reservation for the first available station the system will assign the first station known to be available at the time of booking The availability of workstations could change if someone cancels a reservation or completes a session early Therefore it is possible for someone to sign up after you and get a workstation before you If you have not logged on within the first 5 minutes of your scheduled reservation the system will cancel your reservation The workstation will then become available for other users You can make another reservation for the same day if a time slot is still available You may log on to your reserved workstation up to 9 minutes prior to the reservation time if the workstation is not in use Walk Up A patron may choose to use an unoccupied workstation on a walk up basis If a walk up patron already has a reservation s he will be prompted to relinquish that reservation The workstation will notify the walk up patron if a pending reservation would prevent him her from getting a full 60 minute session Time Limits Access to Internet Stations with a valid Santa Monica Public Library is limited to a maximum daily allotment of 120 minutes subject to workstation availability Individual sessions can be scheduled for up to 60 minutes If using a library card upon completion of a session the workstation may offer up to three 20 minute extensions based on workstation availability There is no set limit on the number of sessions per day Patrons may choose to end a session early and bank their remaining daily allowance for use later in the day If you have not logged in within the first five minutes of your scheduled reservation the system will cancel your reservation The workstation will then become available for other users To preserve time remaining on your daily limit click the End Session button at the end of each use If a user s reserved time is over and additional time has not been granted by the reservation system the system will automatically close all programs on the computer The computer will provide warnings when a user s session is about to end Internet Stations automatically shut down 5 minutes before closing and cannot be reset by staff Saving Your Work Users are responsible for intermittently saving their work to a portable
