you enter into an inner stillness and silence Here in this tranquil inner space you are reconnecting with the spiritual part of your nature This is not an imaginary world an escape from reality this is reality this is what you are in your essential nature this is what you will become If the outer life is the restlessness of the ocean surface the constant movement of waves then meditation is the silence of the ocean floor the tranquility of the depths Inside your soul an ocean of peace lies waiting If you practice meditation regularly you will gradually access this growing calm and happiness and like the fragrance of a flower the fragrance of the soul will permeate every part of your life Each of us begins meditation with a goal of our own curiosity a wish to overcome stress or become more peaceful perhaps a desire to know ourselves and our potentials more deeply As we achieve these early goals new goals emerge and today s accomplishment becomes only the starting point of tomorrow s new journey And as a flower opens and blossoms so do we begin to see our own infinite capacities open and blossom and our life flower into a greater happiness a deeper peace and a more abiding satisfaction One of the mysteries of life is that we don t really know who we are We think of ourselves in such finite terms as mind personality body profession But we are essentially spiritual beings trying to reunite with our souls with the freedom and happiness of our true selves we are eternal travellers trying to find our way home Begin by thinking of meditation as a journey your own abiding happiness is the goal If you are ready to begin this journey then the

breathe out and again at the bottom of the breath before you breathe in and try to expand that moment of stillness between each inhalation each exhalation In this way the breath becomes a little deeper calmer slower and prepares us Now we can focus on breathing in several different qualities one by one The first is peace as you inhale feel that you are breathing peace into every part of your being On the outgoing breath imagine you are breathing out anything that is unlike peace any restlessness stress negative thoughts or feelings If it helps you can imagine the incoming breath to be pure white light vibrant with purity and peace the outgoing breathe grey with impurities or thoughts If you find it easier simply focus on the incoming breath and the quality of peace feel a sense of each breath drawing you a little deeper within drawing you into a lovely inner space Simplicity is best the less thoughts and ideas in the mind the better After several minutes feel you are breathing in cosmic energy from the universe purifying and energising every part of your being With each breath a river is flowing through you a river of life force and cosmic energy displacing tiredness stress negative thoughts imagine you are exhaling the negative qualities extracting them on the outgoing breath Finally breathe in the quality of joy or happiness Feel this expanding inside you flowing through you imagine even your face is smiling Again on the outgoing breath feel that you are breathing out the opposite qualities any suffering sadness problems Practise this for a few minutes after some time working with these simple visualisations imagination becomes reality and you will actually feel more peaceful and happy The more still the mind can become the more these positive images and qualities can be felt for these are qualities of the soul itself They are inside you already you are simply creating the conditions in which they can be directly experienced So that meditation is less an act of learning than an act of remembering rediscovering It is your own deeper self that you will find To finish simply let your awareness come back to the breath don t think of any particular quality but simply feel a sense of being at rest inside a very tranquil inner space The mind is clear and empty like a vast sky any wandering thoughts that arise are insignificant a tiny bird crossing the emptiness Notice the calm flow of the breath feel a sense of being suspended in the rhythm of each breath and that nothing else exists How still can you become Practise cultivating an empty mind calm breath When the breath is the only reality you will feel very peaceful and meditative Some Pointers You can practise these simple breath visualisations each day until your mind becomes more still and add to these one or more new exercises as we progress Begin with 10 minutes every

You notice it but it does not disturb you your mind is anchored inside the calm flow of breath Finally try this simple exercise to develop your concentration At eye level make a black dot on the wall and stand only about two feet back from it concentrate on this small point your eyes open with intensity as though this is the most important thing in the world as though your very life depends on it After some time feel as you breathe in that your breath is actually coming from the dot and that your outgoing breath is returning into the dot You are drawing your very life breath from the dot and its breath is flowing back from you If you practise this you will get results your power of concentration can easily be developed Exercise Concentration on the Candle Flame Let s go back to the partly open eye technique the lions meditation and try another exercise in concentration The skill of concentration is more easily mastered when you can visually connect to something an anchor point for the mind like a magnifying glass gathering and focusing the rays of the sun Concentration gathers the wandering tendencies of the mind into a single point of focus Begin by focusing your attention on the candle flame and gather all your concentration into one point The base of the flame is easier on the eyes than the bright flame itself Feel a sense of intensity as though this is the most important thing in your life Let thoughts distractions everything fall away only the flame exists Feel like an arrow or a bullet travelling quickly towards and into the flame merging into it Feel alertness and intensity of effort We are using the mind s dynamic willpower to clear the way of thoughts or feelings After several minutes of concentrating all of your awareness on the outer candle flame on your table or shrine close your eyes and imagine the candle flame inside your spiritual heart in the very centre of your chest Concentrate your awareness on the inner flame its light its warmth its brightness is inside you Gradually let this image expand the luminosity of the flame is expanding outwards and upwards into the mind filling every part of the being Feel that you are filled with the warmth and radiance of the flame the light of the soul is occupying every part of you When through practice you begin to actually experience a sense of being filled with golden light your power of concentration is really preparing you for the next step into meditation If the mind wanders in this exercise reopen your eyes and focus again on the outer candle then once again bring the image into the centre of the chest and concentrate the mind there The focus from outer to inner back and forth extends our concentration from physical object to abstract imagined object and is helpful in our spiritual training and in

superior power to keep it quiet This superior power is the power of the soul You have to bring to the fore the light of the soul from inside your heart When you know what you want and where to find it the sensible thing is to go to that place Suppose you have the opportunity to work at two places At one place you will earn 200 and at the other place 500 If you are wise you will not waste your time at the first place When you meditate on the heart not only do you get aspiration but you also get the fulfillment of that aspiration the soul s infinite peace light and bliss Remember this key principle the more silent the mind the more the consciousness of the soul like the fragance of an inner flower can be directly felt and experienced And then everything you do will carry the sincerity truthfulness power sweetness and integrity of your truest and highest Self Meditation sets you free of all masks and disguises to express the uniqueness of your own true nature in every moment of your life Exercise A Heart Visualisation Where concentration develops intense focus and one pointedness of mind the contraction of all thought down to a single point of attention meditation is expansion from the finite to the infinite a sense of vastness Sri Chinmoy s imagery in describing meditation is filled with references to horizonless skies the stillness and silence of calm seas The mind in meditation is a calm sky the spiritual heart is the infinite ocean If you find it difficult to imagine the spiritual heart begin by imagining a small hole in the centre of your chest the heart chakra Imagine the breath flowing directly in and out through this centre You may with practice begin to feel a warm sensation there If your mind is restless and distracting you feel the quality of purity in your heart the feeling of having a living shrine in the inmost recesses of your being Purity is a powerful and pivotal quality in our spiritual life it connects us to our soul and to the powerful meditation energies of our heart displacing the mundane things of the mind which otherwise capture our attention If you invoke purity or silently repeat the word purity and feel the presence of an inner shrine in your heart meditation will come more easily Sitting at your special place in meditation try to feel that your whole existence is nothing but heart Feel that you are not this body not this mind you are only the heart Or as a variant of this feel that you are only the soul like a mantra repeat to yourself I am the soul I am the soul I am the soul If it helps imagine the soul inside the heart centre as a simple inspiring image an ideal a small point of light a flower a beautiful serene child a small

branch also includes pranayama the science of breath control to help control and purify mind and body But there are three other principle branches Karma yoga is desireless action undertaken to serve God in humanity and not for self gain Mother Teresa for example illustrates this ideal in her tireless service to the poor of India she was serving God and Christ in suffering humanity A karma yogin is not concerned by success or failure he or she cultivates detachment and desirelessness and serves without expectation of personal gain or recognition Jnana yoga is the path of knowledge and seeks the truth of life through the understanding of the mind A jnana yogin knows there is a higher world of Truth beyond the sense world and seeks it through rational explanation He declares neti neti not this not this rejecting falsehood and illusion as he seeks to comprehend the eternal and highest truths of life beyond it s changing forms and appearances The reasoning mind does not interest the follower of bhakti yoga the fourth principal yoga This is the path of love and devotion to God the path of the heart the path of feeling For those who do believe in the existence of God or in some kind of higher reality or divine intelligence bhakti yoga is the fastest way Here there is a shift away from self effort and mere mastery of technique towards a greater dependence on our personal idea or feeling of God As a child depends entirely on its parents for everything in bhakti yoga the practitioner of meditation depends on God invokes God trusts God in every part of the spiritual journey Here the word God does not imply a necessity to embrace any religious dogmas or beliefs rather to be effective our idea of God has to be something personal a feeling image or intuition of some connection we have to a higher loving being One of the most powerful elements in our nature is the power of love In its everyday form it is limited to those close and dear to us but human love is also evolving and capable of great expansion And where human love often has a personal need desire and attraction assuaging our loneliness a need for companionship or a deeper association with somebody it can also develop through spiritual progress into something unlimited and serve as a powerful force in our meditation In bhakti yoga the force of love in the human heart is directed out to God and calls upon or invokes the guidance or grace of a loving Being who will take care of our journey expedite our progress show us our way forward In bhakti yoga too as we deepen this feeling of our inner connection with a higher being we begin to see divinity all around us The Creator is in all of his creation and the limited human love grows into an unlimited spiritual love freed from personal need to expand

the mother of all the mantras He talks of its infinite power and that Aum is at once the life the body and the breath of God When man chants Aum he writes he touches and calls forth the cosmic vibration of the supreme Sound For those of us encountering mantras for the first time such accounts seem extraordinary but also inspiring for they offer a glimpse into an incredible universe awaiting our discovery But mantras are also infinitely practical as well you can t usually meditate while walking along a busy city street for example but you can be inwardly chanting a mantra and this will immediately open up the doorway into your spiritual life and increase your inner strength Here in the hustle and bustle of life your mantra is bringing forward your peace and poise all around you the dynamism of the world inside you a calm detachment and the happiness fragrance of the soul Your mantra is the connecting link between outer inner earth Heaven man God matter spirit and it is as easy as the sound of a single word Some Pointers If your mind is busy with thoughts when you begin meditation you can chant Aum or Supreme very quickly as if you were running to catch a moving train to use Sri Chinmoy s apt words It is very effective when possible to chant Aum out aloud the sound of the mantra helps to concentrate and purify the mind Japa the repetition of a mantra should be done in the morning or in the daytime but not at bedtime when it will only energise the body and prevent sleep When chanting Aum pronounced Om as in home the mmm sound is two or three times longer than the au sound In my workshops I often play a CD called Aum Ocean which features Sri Chinmoy chanting Aum along with background sounds of ocean waves and very peaceful flute music It has great appeal and almost instantly induces a tangible meditative feeling in the room that everyone responds to Music and mantras as accompaniment to our meditation can inspire us in this way and enhance our whole experience greatly Mantra Exercise Here is an exercise that extends over two weeks and helps greatly in achieving overall purification of our nature It involves chanting the mantra of your choice Aum and Supreme are two we have introduced so far 500 times on the first day 600 times on the second day 700 times on the third day and adding 100 more repetitions each day until at the end of one week you have reached 1200 Then you begin descending each day by 100 until you are back at 500 If time is an issue or if you chant quite slowly start at 50 and climb up to 120 then progressively back down by 10 each day until you have returned to 50 If you choose to do the 500 1200 or 50 120 exercise you
