    2016 Day 3 Other Events Past Events Industry Events Documents Press Members Area Early Career Publishers Committee Industry Survey 2014 Mentoring Scheme Careers Development Home Early Career Publishers Mentoring Scheme STM Mentoring Programme 2015 Applications for the pilot scheme are now closed One of STM s goals is to provide tools for early career publishing professionals to advance in their roles while also expanding their network in the publishing industry To promote outreach and engagement among entry level and experienced publishers STM s Early Careers Publishing Committee ECPC cross company pilot mentoring scheme is now open for applications from STM members wishing to be involved as mentees and mentors About the Programme Mentoring facilitates the sharing of knowledge expertise skills insights and experiences through dialogue and collaborative learning between a more experienced colleague and a more junior or less experienced colleague STM is now launching a pilot mentoring scheme which provides a unique development opportunity for individuals working in STM member organisations Our new mentoring programme will support your professional development and help you to achieve your career goals Key aspects of the scheme within and between STM member organisations for staff working in all functions and at all levels of seniority international mentorships are encouraged The pilot mentoring programme will run for 6 months and is limited to 20 mentoring relationships in the first instance It is established to nurture and encourage continued learning across STM member companies Eligibility All participants must be working in an STM member organisation at the outset of pairing Participants can be in any function sector publisher type and level of seniority Mentoring relationships will consist of a pairing of 1 mentor and 1 mentee Ground rules included in mentorship agreements agreed by mentors and mentees at the commencement of mentorships will include that

    and relationship development maintaining and expanding relationships with external authors editors editorial boards societies and associations arranging and chairing editorial board meetings attending and presenting at subject conferences visiting university departments to increase market knowledge and meet prospective authors Product Development Developing products in line with the Publishing company strategy and industry developments i e digital innovations Open Access and ensuring high quality content relevant to the requirements of the subject community Industry Standards Ensuring that all guidelines and procedures are followed when handling publication ethics situations Production The Production department within an STM Publishing company is ultimately responsible for the end to end management of content primarily books and journals from the point of supply through to publication print and online Key responsibilities of the department include Administrating the production process from the point of receiving copy through all of the production stages to printing online hosting and final despatch This usually involves overseeing content through an electronic editorial office system into an in house content management system Editorial workflow co ordination and management which may involve managing online supply chain systems i e ScholarOne Editorial Manager Liaising with external editors and authors to ensure content is delivered to schedule is in the required format and contains all necessary permissions and copyright assignment forms Managing publication schedules and pagination budgets ensuring all products publish to schedule and budget Copy editing and proof reading content at various stages through the production workflow as well as overseeing the management of proof corrections Overseeing electronic publication of books and journals to an online platform and supply to third party aggregators and print on demand partners Vendor management managing relationships with external vendors i e printers typesetters illustrators freelance copyeditors and proof readers indexers Ensuring adherence to external industry standards Increasingly the remit of the production department is also expanding to include overseeing some post publication initiatives i e tagging semantic enrichment enhancing discoverability of content Digital Product Management Working with all parts of the business the role of the digital product management team is to develop deliver and support digital products and solutions within organisation Typically they are people who are enthusiastic about technology and how it can best utilised to improve scholarly and scientific communication Responsibilities include Developing digital products and launching them to an agreed plan time quality and profitability Performing research to assess new opportunities for digital solutions Building and developing stakeholder relationships both internal and external Analysing data to produce clear and comprehensive reports to be used by the business Gathering and defining of user and system requirements Perform system testing to validate solution to requirements Marketing Communications In the scholarly publishing industry marketing supports the publisher s activities through Driving new sales opportunities by lead generation and raising the visibility of products Retaining existing revenue by driving product usage and customer outreach Supporting content acquisition by author marketing supporting key conferences and events and engagement with the scholarly community Promoting the publisher with activities from brand management

    see this as transforming scholarly communication How is technology helping our customers do their research share and make discoveries How is your publishing house making use of technology to serve our customers better or to communicate You can focus on the present or look to the future We will announce our winner at the STM Annual Conference at the Frankfurt Book Fair The winner will receive Free registration for the STM Spring Conference in Washington DC Three nights accommodations at STM s Spring Conference venue 1 In person public recognition at the STM Spring Conference along with the exhibition of your winning submission How to enter To enter submit a video podcast photo essay or other multimedia presentation tweet stream cartoon the sky is the limit that explains and illustrates how technology has changed is changing and or will change the world of scholarly communications Entries must be received by Friday September 20 2013 We are looking for entries that can best illustrate our role as technology innovators to people outside publishing houses Explain these advances to those who may not understand how we are moving research forward through innovation and who may not speak our language Any video podcast or photo essay should last no longer than 90 seconds in total There is a 300 word limit for any text to accompany your submission No written essays or Power Point presentations unless they are a vehicle for your images please There are no restrictions on what your submission may contain other than the requirement that it must be your own creative work Also keep in mind that participants entries will be available following the competition on the STM website YouTube and other media including on the social web Aside from that anything that won t embarrass you and your organization are all fine as long as the content is original and not defamatory Singing live action video and or audio recordings and animation can all work along with whatever else you might imagine so be creative Criteria Entries will be judged on content and style not production or editing quality Submissions should be Expressive Clear Enlightening Human Original Not defamatory Rules Regulations Submissions must be titled Submissions can be no longer than 90 seconds Three hundred word limit to any text accompanying your submission Send your entry via YouSendIt or other similar file storage resource to mckay stm assoc org with the following disclaimer in the body of your email The views expressed herein are those of the presenters and do not necessarily represent the views opinions or positions of and should not be attributed to my employer Other considerations All submissions will remain confidential until final judging The STM Communication Committee together with the STM Board will choose the winner and any honorable mentions all of whom will be announced at the STM Annual Conference in Frankfurt on 8 October2013 Submissions will also be on display at the meeting We will post submissions to STM s web site
