  • “Returning to the Awe of Advent” Rev. Patty Willis December 2, 2012 | South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society
days I had been ticking off items on a list that person was picked up at the airport I spent some time with them I was able to see my parents for a couple of hours I spent some hours writing my sermon almost finished Lou s mother arrived and was at her niece s house It was a long list By the time I arrived at Paul and Shawn s house I was ready to check off party at Paul and Shawn s and move into the Bread Communion ceremony the next morning All of a sudden Paul came up to me and said We re going to begin what shall we do for a prayer This unexpected request caught me in mid air I probably had that deer in the headlights look I knew how to do a prayer if the gathering had only been the ministers or only been my parents but together How could I pray in a way that would speak to each person at the gathering This was something that needed thought and I didn t have any time to think more exactly I was in a busy mode with my feet about a foot off the ground The time came and I expressed my thanks for everyone being there and did a kind of generic we give thanks Amen and the delicious dinner began Later and even at the time I realized that I had lost the chance of that moment to express the feelings of my heart to everyone there In my busyness I had lost access to my heart Thankfully hearts were brought together anyway during that evening and the ordination was transformative to all my family involved The ordination was in no way spoiled by my busyness but an opportunity was lost I used to think that when Einstein wrote that the most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious he was imagining the star studded sky the workings of the universe I would love to see what he saw out of his eyes Recently I have come to think that perhaps he was also thinking of those connections among humans when we truly see one another when we are present to one another and something is exchanged heart to heart He wrote that the experience of the mysterious is the source of all true art and science He to whom this emotion is a stranger who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead his eyes are closed Does busyness close our eyes and rob us of this experience of awe And would letting go of busyness open us up to awe This week Lou and I went to a reading from the Christmas Carol at the Federal Heights Ward of the LDS church The woman who gave this wonderful reading was a friend of Lou s friends Nick and Rachelle Lou s childhood friends from Los Angeles who have

  • “Searching for Words for Our Prayers” Rev. Patty Willis March 2, 2014 | South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society
in this congregation that we re more comfortable teaching classes such as Our Whole Lives sex education than offering one on prayer And many of us who come into this sanctuary have been hurt by religions that teach us to pray in prescribed ways We have been taught to pray to change ourselves rather than accept ourselves I remember those days of praying to a frowning god who wanted me to be different Over thirty years ago I stopped praying to shut him out of my life I stopped believing in a god in the form of a human who was judging all my actions Much much later I began to feel peace when I was out in nature a peace that led me to believe that the whole world was holy Right at this time of year when the snow was deep and we couldn t get out of the house a bird sang and Mary Lou whistled and it sang back That bird was a messenger with hope as were the frogs that began making a laughing sound from the breaks in the ice that covered the rice fields And as I opened to possibilities in the natural world I began to see how humans were the hands of God how they had been the hands of God not the God that I had left that was much much too small a concept and they came to me when I was in need Prayer became a way of learning to listen to the heart to find as St Exupery wrote that which is invisible to the eye In order to have prayer be a source of healing I had to re think prayer and that re thinking process continues to unfold Seven years ago after we moved to Arizona we met someone who embodied a kind of unconditional love I had never experienced before Our meeting Marjory Tyndall was yet another gift from the universe At her memorial service only days before we made our way up north to you and this ministry I said She did not believe in God or angels yet in her face I at last saw God and in her presence the brush of wings Through experiencing her love prayer gradually became an encounter with a source of unlimited unconditional love Marj was an agnostic or atheist and my encounter with her deepened my connection with prayer That is the wonder of Unitarian Universalism we are religious explorers and we are not all heading for the same conclusions The evidence of our lives our encounters lead us in different directions We are here to learn to value our differences rather than try to convince each other to be the same Being with you has deepened my prayer life yet again in all of the scary encounters I have at the Capitol and up here at this pulpit And in conversation you have taught me much I must thank a member of this congregation
