  • SS What do We Teach? | South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society
History We tell our kids about some of their forebears who tried to make this a better world Then at least when someone says Unitarian Universalist what s that they can answer Have you heard of Thomas Jefferson or Susan B Anthony or Ralph Waldo Emerson Of course more important than giving them a reply is the sense of tradition and identity they ll get from learning our history Our Jewish and Christian Heritage The Bible contains some good lessons wisdom and inspiring thoughts Knowing more about its history will help our children defend their beliefs This is a Judeo Christian culture and to be culturally literate we need to know the myths and symbols and stories in the Bible World Religions Knowing about other religions encourages tolerance of other cultures and a feeling of being a world citizen Our children learn that some religions believe in one God some believe in many Gods some believe in no God and some are combinations of the above They will learn that monotheism polytheism and atheism all have something to teach us Thinking About the Big Questions We want our children to have a safe place where they can bring life s questions We may not always know the answers but we can share our experiences and insights By doing this we are teaching our children to honor their own knowing and trust in what they believe We want them to know that what they believe and how they act on those beliefs gives them the power to shape their own lives and the world in which they live Signposts Events Meeting Minutes Monday Menus News Sermons Service Recordings Uncategorized Upcoming Services What s New Exciting Mailing List Changes Community Chat Coming Soon February 21st after church Navigating the River Ahead Change

  • SS Notes For Parents | South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society
you chose this church and what it means to you Talk about how you act on your beliefs about fairness tolerance caring for the earth etc and provide your child with opportunities to act on his or her beliefs too This is by far the most important thing you can do to promote a spiritual and religious life for your child Find Out What They re Doing Ask your child about what goes on in their class or what they like about coming to church You are encouraged to visit their classroom to see evidence of what happens there Check in with the teachers on a regular basis to monitor your child s behavior Volunteer to help in the classroom once in a while or offer transportation for special activities Attend social events such as family potluck dinners or special REGAL events You are always welcome to offer feedback to our Director of Religious Education Liz Martin at DRE svuus org or to the REGAL Council about what we do here Encourage Regular Attendance While we understand that perfect attendance for every child may not be possible we hope that you will make a sincere effort to bring your child to church as often as possible Many units of study last several weeks and your child will gain much more from the class if he or she attends regularly Read the Newsletter Our monthly newsletter The Beacon is one of the primary means of communication with you Be sure to read the REGAL news section to find out the latest events outings and other issues of concern relating to our church school Signposts Events Meeting Minutes Monday Menus News Sermons Service Recordings Uncategorized Upcoming Services What s New Exciting Mailing List Changes Community Chat Coming Soon February 21st after church
