Latinoamericano plays and Tapage dances and the combined result is very attractive basically due to the fact that the dancers and choreographers have a very good feeling and intuition to reinterpret through movement the essence of the music Throughout Dansaq one can appreciate among many other things the fact that Fujibayashi and Rosenkrantz conceive and realize their choreographic composition and dance performance without recourse to the simple transliteration of the titles or the evident contents of the pieces approaching each score instead in a flexible varied and intuitive fashion In other words it s true that they do not fully reject categorically emphasizing with their bodies and tap shoes some of the music s accents but they do not fall into rigid imitation by coincidence that ugly vice that both in film and dance is known as mickeymouseing Time and again it s been remarked I myself commented on the subject a few years ago in this column that one of Tapage s greatest assets is their unfailing intuition to select the music to which they apply their choreographic and performance work In the case of their collaboration with Cuarteto Latinoamericano there is an evident joint effort in the process of musical selection a process that in this particular version of Dansaq has resulted in an impeccable musical continuity This session of Dansaq with Tapage and Cuarteto Latinoamericano began on the right foot actually two right feet with a playful version of Ástor Piazzolla s Four for tango subjected to bodily solfège by Tapage alongside the musicians From then on an interesting combination of musical works of Latin American Iranian Chinese and Japanese origin for each of which Fujibayashi and Rosenkrantz created highly individual choreographic versions with specific well defined dynamic and expressive features The high point of the performance

workshop as was the In the Pocket class in improvisation lead by Max Pollak and Tom Cleary The TK annual team cutting contest was very exciting this year the level of improvisation was so high that the judges had to throw random time signatures at the dancers in order to eliminate anyone After an exciting series of trades between Demi Remick for Purple Pain and Brittany DeStefano for The Flamingos the title went to Brittany DeStefano whose team was dancing for breast cancer Unlike a traditional cutting contest at TAP KIDS the dancers don t dance for themselves they dance for their team and the proceeds go to a charity selected by the winning team The tap jam cruise on Lake Champlain aboard The Spirit of Ethan Allen was a night to remember and a chance for dancers faculty and friends to mingle and jam and take a much needed break on the 3 hour sunset cruise Faculty member Jimmy Tate even took out his guitar and serenadedthe crowd with an impromptu performance on the deck The Tap Kids summer intensive began as a workshop for pre professional dancers in 2000 dancers from across the US and Canada apply each year by videotape audition for the chance to participate Only 75 kids are accepted The professional touring show TAP KIDS premiered in 2002 and has since played at major theatres in more than 35 states traveled to Mexico twice and The Netherlands three times including a command performance in Amsterdam for the Queen of Holland TAP KIDS earned rave reviews for their month long run at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland in August 2009 and received the first 5 Star review of the entire festival Other performance highlights a National television spot on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon and

from home festival Everyone who walks in is treated like family For those itching to leave the nest and try something on international soil start saving your pennies now This goofy group is full of personality Everyone has something different to the table One minute you are swinging with Tristan Bruns and then you are grooving with Nora Clark Improvising remixing with Bril Barrett and asking is Jumaanee Taylor really doing a 6 8 Star and Donnetta will make you sweat and Jaybo starts the class off with a stretch just when you really need it The events are always fun and educational the show is a must see event of the year but most importantly there is always a ton of food waiting to fill you up and recharge for what s next Not to mention you are in Chicago We know what you are thinking and to be honest you have a better chance of seeing Barrack Obama before you see Oprah but who needs Oprah when you have tap for three days straight Interning at the Summit has always been an experience It is a huge part as to how we learned to start our own business and were able to take as many classes from as many people as we have It is not all fun and games and often there seems to be more work than classes being taken The experiences and lesson learned in and out of class are invaluable We strongly suggest to any young dancer who wants to learn the business or take class but simply cannot afford to make to trek to really consider applying for an interning position If you want it bad enough you will make it happen Hope to see you next year Quick Links Join the ITA

  • Rhythm Summit by Tapmotif 2010, Lefkada | www.tapdance.org
western part of Greece Thus the hanging began right away and thus the genius of the TapMotif concept was immediately apparent unlike any other educational environment I ve been in TapMotif offers its participants an unprecedented level of access to the artists Right from the drop the faculty and student participants were interacting in a friendly very social and very nonacademic environment We stayed in the same hotels together ate all our meals together rode the bus to and from classes and other events together Basically it was a huge never ending hang As a teaching artist I felt there were very few traditional student teacher boundaries participants and faculty alike were all TapMotifians all part of a shared experience aimed at elevating everyone with a deep sense of community You might think that as a teacher one would need some time off but at no time did I feel overwhelmed by the experience or that I was unable respond to questions posed by the students It was all very natural and the classroom was anywhere we were be it at the school where classes took place at the breakfast table on the beautiful hotel veranda at the beach on the bus or at the nightly jam sessions This level of student teacher interaction and of music dance integration is very rare and I would recommend contacting Thanos at the TapMotif website if you are interested in participating next year The faculty included Max Pollak Heather Cornell Petros Klampanis and Spyros Manesis and master Greek percussionist Petros Kourtis TapMotif finished with a flourish a concert performance featuring two large music dance projects put together by the participants as well as various smaller lineups of students and faculty performing individually and together To promote the event in the town of Lefkada
