    SPIRE algorithms utilize prior spatial and spectral information to estimate surface spectral reflectance for subsequent scene captures SPIRE s performance under a variety of atmospheric conditions overcomes many limitations of physics based correction models and it does not require ground truth spectra at specific locations Existing atmospheric correction algorithms typically work well only under certain restrictive conditions such as having pixels of known location and reflectance ground truth or clear cloudfree conditions Often they require analyst inputs and supervised iteration for the best results SPIRE algorithms overcome these limitations without requiring analyst guidance and are effective under a broad range of atmospheric conditions including overcast and hazy skies without the need for constant ground truthing Benefits Applicable for single channel multispectral and hyperspectral imagery data Outperforms physics based models such as ATREM under less than ideal circumstances Analyses of multiple scene captures based on only one set of ground truth data are comparable to models such as ELM that require ground truthing for each scene capture Good results under high clouds diffuse illumination haze and artificial illumination The Opportunity SPIRE is covered by US Patent 7 260 242 The patent is available for license from the US Air Force A
