    an estimated 31 lives and 140 million for the U S Navy Losses are most frequently experienced during periods of minimal visibility or inadvertent flight entry into instrument meteorological conditions It is the duty of the pilot in command or the air mission commander to determine the prevailing visibility through which the flight will be traveling As weather deteriorates pilots must rely on subjective analysis to decide whether to proceed alter or abort the mission The AVI was conceived to provide a flight crew with a cockpit instrument capable of providing critical real time visibility information from which an informed decision can be made Instruments are generally used in fixed applications airports or weather observing stations however the AVI is an instrument that can be operated at high airspeeds It can determine the visual range under many conditions of precipitation e g rain snow hail and obscurations e g mist fog smoke dust Image Right The Technology The AVI consists of a LIDAR light detection and ranging system interfaced with a visibility threshold controller and a data display device The LIDAR system determines visibility ranges from an aircraft by sending a beam of light which intersects with obscurants and is reflected back to a sensor located on the aircraft By measuring the time difference between transmission and reception of the reflected light a processing unit of the LIDAR system can determine the range of the obscurants The strength of the reflected beam depends on the degree of back reflection of the particles in the air By measuring the power of the returned signal the LIDAR system calculates a range of visibility The AVI can take a reading on visibility from the nose of an aircraft forward up to 4 statute miles including an area 30 degrees either side of centerline

    The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division NAWCAD developed a new fast rope that is resistant to downwash caused by larger aircraft The rope is designed to allow a safer grip higher up on the rope and the rope provides high accuracy when descending to targets such as small roofs and boats The NAWCAD solution consists of three separate braids around a weighted or unweighted core The weighted core alone provides stability but the braids of dissimilar materials increase stiffness and also provide substantial stability in unweighted fast ropes The design significantly absorbs or dampens the potential oscillations of the suspended rope resulting in a fast rope that can be used in a much wider range of situations while always delivering improved accuracy and safety The rope was originally designed to compensate for the high rotor wash generated by the V 22 Osprey but the rope has proven advantageous against the rotor wash of heavy helicopters and has demonstrated safety and accuracy advantages under smaller aircraft as well Benefits Stable Undulation and oscillation is greatly reduced by the stiffness of carefully selected layers of differing materials and the weight of an optional lead core Safe The increased stability of the

    18 jet aircraft NAVAIR s Net Centric Diagnostics Framework NCDF has applications for other aircraft vehicles and hardware systems NCDF interfaces directly with test equipment captures test data and guides maintenance based on current and historical test results for the particular piece of equipment The data is shared throughout the maintenance network to facilitate faster and more effective troubleshooting Data generated during repair and re testing flows back down the system to the field as the equipment is returned to service The result is the automatic creation and flow of a complete data record from the field diagnostic personnel to the highest echelons of maintenance repair and back again NCDF adheres to pertinent IEEE standards such as Automatic Test Markup Language ATML for maintenance information collection and analysis so it can be used as a standardized platform for a variety of maintenance applications The software has been field tested on F A 18 avionics and is being adapted for additional avionics packages and other aircraft including the V 22 Osprey NCDF has potential applications for the maintenance of other military and civilian aircraft vehicles and various additional hardware platforms The US Navy anticipates that NCDF will save the F A 18 program several million dollars per year in repair costs significantly reduce the number of false alarms encountered and increase maintenance and repair efficiency through better data flow Benefits Efficient Data is synchronized automatically throughout the maintenance regime reducing paperwork and data input errors Cost Effective Different echelons of troubleshooting and repair have ready access to test data from other levels lowering false positives and reducing the need for redundant subsequent diagnostic testing Broadly Applicable NCDF adherence to IEEE standards for maintenance information ensures the software is compatible with a wide array of diagnostic repair and maintenance regimes The Opportunity
