  • Urban League Weighs in on Chicago Teachers Union Strike PRESS RELEASE Contact Roderick Hawkins 773 451 3536 rhawkins thechicagourbanleague org Lauren Love 773 451 3524 llove thechicagourbanleague org Please see below a statement from Andrea L Zopp president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League regarding the Chicago Teachers Union strike CHICAGO September 10 2012 As the Chicago Teachers Union strikes in the midst of contractnegotiations the Chicago Urban League s greatest concern is the children and families impacted by thestrike We encourage all Chicagoans to play an active role in ensuring the safety and well being of ourschoolchildren during this interruption in their education Families whose students are impacted by theteachers strike and who are unable to provide alternative plans for their children are encouraged tocontact Chicago Public Schools to get information about their Children First contingency plan thatincludes the operation of 144 sites that provide a safe haven for children Despite the challenges a teachers strike causes the Chicago Urban League is fully committed to stayingconnected to the hundreds of children we serve through our programs that reach students in grades 6through 12 We will continue operating our programs that serve CPS students including our UrbanYouth Connection program Operated out of our Englewood location Urban Youth Connection providesmentoring and life skills coaching to high risk young men enrolled in CPS high schools We will alsocontinue operating without interruption the National Urban League Incentives to Excel and Succeed N U L I T E S program for 6 8th graders and our Project Ready and urbanSCHOLARS programs thatreach high school juniors and seniors We will continue providing these programs that reach students from around the city and will expandour programing in anticipation of additional students who are impacted by the strike This interruptionin the education of our children will

  • and willing to buy their own insurance are being denied coverage because of a pre existing condition Under the new law insurance companies won t be able to deny health coverage for pre existing conditions The law also creates access to affordable coverage for individuals as well as employee sponsored health benefits Before the reform law the United States was the only industrialized nation that did not ensure universal health care coverage for its citizens Nevertheless the reform legislation has enraged President Obama s critics who took their complaint all the way to the U S Supreme Court They lost that battle but the war some believe is still winnable Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has said that he would overturn Obamacare if he is elected president House Republicans voted again to repeal the law in the last two weeks It was a symbolic move in light of the Supreme Court s ruling and Republicans minority status in the House but five Democrats joined them The vote demonstrates that the healthcare reform issue will continue to be hotly debated and potentially reversed by the people we elect to serve in Congress and in the White House this year Conservative legislators in Washington also want to limit federal control and expansion of the Medicaid program But it is not just the conservatives limiting access to health care Here in Illinois Governor Quinn pushed a bill through the legislature that made significant some would say unduly harsh cuts to Medicaid in Illinois eliminating eligibility for thousands and removing critical services such as dental and mental health care Changes to Medicaid disproportionately impact African Americans with some 24 percent covered by public insurance compared to 16 percent of white Americans Regardless of where you are in the economic spectrum well off or not
