  • Ray of Hope | The Family International
    matching outfits There is so much pain and confusion right now in the townships but we wanted to share a ray of hope which we experienced this month Our full time counselor and peer educator Barbara had phoned and told us to expect a surprise this Wednesday morning We were not sure what to expect especially given the situation with the xenophobic attacks that are happening here but as we drove in to the grounds of the Support and Counseling Centre the whole group of mothers were dressed in their new choir outfits singing and dancing Zimbabweans and South Africans together expressing their happiness and thankfulness To add to the excitement we had a surprise for them the new netball outfits which had arrived at our doorstep during the week This led to more jubilation and everyone rushed inside the centre to change As they came out dressed as the Mother s Club Netball Team they looked like school girls again as if the cares and burdens had been temporarily lifted off their shoulders Our whole morning was filled with so much joy as we also met two members of our TB group who have had a complete turnaround in

  • Mother's Club Activities | The Family International
    two ideas a party and tree planting For the party we organised snacks cakes drinks and music and the mothers had a wonderful time We enjoyed it so much we now have a party every month to celebrate the babies birthdays In conjunction with a local company we supplied ten trees to Diepsloot a township on the outskirts of Johannesburg We had a lot of fun transporting mothers babies and trees in the back of our bakkie small pickup truck to different locations around Diepsloot The majority of trees were planted at the children s playground and some mothers planted them next to their shacks We had an official thank you from the City Parks Department for the mothers contribution to the environment Peer Education Peer Education One very encouraging development is that we have now initiated peer education for HIV AIDS One of the mothers Barbara has a very good understanding of the topic and is happy to help educate the others She is also very faithful to stand up for their rights whenever problems arise as well as help the mothers obtain ID if they find it difficult to navigate the bureaucratic system Photo Framing Photo Framing We

  • Carpet a Creche Campaign, Diepsloot | The Family International
    more cold floors for winter Every year we work to upgrade the crèches childcare facility in Diepsloot in some way Most of the babies and toddlers take their naps during the day on cement floors often with just a thin blanket underneath them Most crèches have very little carpet Thanks to Cornastone upgrading their office carpet we have so far been able to carpet six crèches as well as our

  • Combating Disease and Starvation | The Family International
    in the past year 50 children at the orphanage died of malnutrition or disease Our first challenge was to stock the orphanage with as much food as we could buy with our limited funds A morning of trudging through mud and filth at the central market netted about 500 kg 1 100 lb of rice beans flour tomato paste oil etc Our next challenge was to get it all to the orphanage as we had no vehicle UN peacekeepers whom we met hitchhiking volunteered their two Jeeps for the trip to the orphanage one to carry the supplies and one for the five of us Esther Angela Kaylee John and Théophile This way the UN captain asked in disbelief when we came to the flooded dirt road that led to the orphanage It wasn t long before the Bible adage Two are better than one Ecclesiastes 4 9 10 took on new meaning When one Jeep got stuck in the mud the other was able to pull it out We had a wonderful time at the orphanage giving the children special attention encouraging the staff and presenting the Family produced educational and inspirational materials we had brought for them a Start Early poster set and Feed My Lambs booklets in French Next we needed to find a way for the orphanage to become more self sufficient and Théophile agreed that an agricultural project would best meet that need With financial and legal assistance from people we met as we followed an initial lead we helped Théophile buy a two hectare field outside of Kinshasa When we needed to deliver gardening tools and seeds to the site the UN peacekeepers who had driven us to the orphanage volunteered again After we returned to South Africa we received an email from Théophile
