  • Comparing--Friend or Foe of Happiness? | The Family International
we need It may not always be what we want or come in the way we would like it to but if we truly have faith in God and His love we will accept what He sends our way Whether it seems to be a blessing or a burden at the time each attribute and each experience is a gift from His hand and it all balances out in the end Those who learn to be content with who they are and what they have don t struggle as much inwardly as those who haven t yet accepted God s plan for them Those who constantly compare examine observe and analyze everything to see how they match up usually come to very unhappy and often wrong conclusions and lead very unhappy lives Their negativity about themselves and their circumstances not only makes them miserable to begin with but it also drives others away which seems to validate their negative feelings and thus perpetuates the cycle Comparing can make quite a mess of things but there is a way out Realizing that the Lord doesn t compare you with others and loves you no matter what is a giant step toward relieving problems you may have with envy and comparing The more you believe and accept that the Lord loves you just the way He made you and the more you learn to value Him and His love and the things of His Spirit the less reason you ll find to compare The relatively trivial things of life your looks your body your skills and abilities will fade into the background as the things of true importance take on greater meaning for you The count your blessings game The solution is really that simple but it s often easier said than done especially if you have a deeply ingrained habit of negatively comparing yourself with others or your situation with theirs It will probably take prayer and a conscious effort over time to form a new more positive mindset but the Lord will help you if you try I think one of the best exercises that we can do is to compare ourselves favorably with others who are much worse off than we are and to count our blessings Whenever we are tempted to complain about our problems or the way we are it s nearly always easy to find others who are worse off than we are Even with our worst problem we can usually think of countless others who have even worse problems No matter how bad off we are we re always better off than millions of others This is the way we should always look at it and not the other way around If we will take the time for this little exercise in positive comparing I dare say that without exception we will come out feeling better It won t change the way God made you and it may not take care of our immediate problem

  • You Can Overcome Your Past | The Family International
In other words the more we get immersed in Jesus and His Word and learn to do things His way the more old things will pass away and the more things will become new It doesn t happen all at once but as we put our will on His side more and more things from the past that used to plague us become less painful and less important It s a popular trend in the world today for people to blame all their present problems on others or events from their past their parents their siblings their peers their environment their heredity rather than on the personal choices they have made A lot of people buy into this way of thinking because it is decidedly easier on their pride than accepting that they are wrong in being bitter against someone or something However the Christian life is all about overcoming obstacles rising above our circumstances and not letting things get us down It s about making stepping stones out of stumbling blocks It s about being healed in body and mind through faith becoming whole through the Lord s love and becoming free from the bondage of bitterness and resentment through God s Word It s about letting Jesus resolve and override problems carried over from the past by His renewing and transforming of our mind Romans 12 2 Some of our problems may indeed be wholly or partly the result of things that happened in our childhood or adult past We are all products of our environment to some extent and as such have been influenced positively in some respects and negatively in others No one in this world has had completely positive experiences everyone has had at least some difficulties and hurts caused by past experiences some of which have been long lasting But the important thing for you to remember is that you can ask the Lord for help in overcoming any problems caused by past hurts These things do not have to continue to control you or even influence you emotionally mentally or spiritually The Lord and His Word put the responsibility on each of us for how we react to whatever situations we find ourselves in God has given each person a free will and free choice and is constantly asking us to make the right decisions and to take the right steps When we do He is right there to see us through The fact that we can have some measure of control over the way we are is obvious when we look at different individuals who have experienced some big setbacks in life perhaps even much greater than our own Some react in one way and some in another and as a result turn out to be very different types of people leading very different lives Despite their past some are happy healthy successful and well adjusted while others are just the opposite depressed unhappy discontented or disturbed Those who have experienced difficulties

  • Why Do the Innocent Die? | The Family International
those who know God but who have not lived up to the truth they have been given and been loving to others to learn their lesson and do better in the future Other times it causes people to shift their attention from trivial pursuits to the true values of life And if they let it it teaches everyone lessons such as love compassion mercy unselfishness and humility It draws those who love God closer to Him and it brings some of the wayward to repentance and salvation when in their suffering they cry out to Him Whatever God does He does it in love In each bad thing that happens He s giving people another opportunity to turn to Him Those who do come out the better for it in the long run God is always ready willing and able to turn tragedy into triumph God is righteous and God is just God is fair and God is loving and kind God is perfect and God knows best Everything will work out well in the long run People will be rewarded according to their works whether they are good or evil In the afterlife everything will be squared up and there will be rewards for those who deserve them and punishment for those who deserve that Most people consider death a horrible curse but the truth is when people leave this world no matter how good or bad they may have had it here they can be much better off If you believe that there is a better life after death then you can understand why God in His mercy would sometimes take people out of this world with its suffering pain poverty and oppression Those who die in disasters are often the fortunate ones If they knew God they

sense of rightness and righteousness while others act out of hypocrisy Those who truly know and love Me follow My words and My example and seek and strive for peace Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God Matthew 5 9 I went so far as to say that you should love your enemies bless those who curse you and do good to those who hate you Matthew 5 44 Do those who are so intent on waging war heed My words in this Or do they merely call on Me with their lips but their hearts are far from Me It is a law of nature that you will reap what you sow Those who wage war who pursue the domination destruction and devastation of other lands will reap sorrow and bloodshed themselves I know the hearts of men I will reward the peacemakers I will judge the warmongers Every man will give account before Me in the day of judgment Search your own heart Determine where you stand whether on the side of peace or the side of war on the side of freedom or the side of tyranny I am the Almighty and Omnipotent God I could use My power to force humanity to do what is right but I have chosen to give man the majesty of choice I allow each person and each nation to determine their own destiny through the choices they make I do not impose My will or My plan upon humanity How much less should mere mortals impose their will and plan upon others One person should never force another to conform to their beliefs or way of life One government should never force another to operate according to its ideals and desires This is not

  • Why is There Suffering? | The Family International
here to make choices between right and wrong good and evil So when it comes right down to it most suffering is the result of people s choices Sometimes people deliberately inflict suffering on others and sometimes the suffering is a byproduct of selfish choices or indifference choosing not to make choices that could avoid or alleviate the suffering But either way people are to blame God doesn t approve of choices that harm others or us but if He were to step in every time we made a bad choice He d have to put an end to freedom of choice altogether Why do people make choices that hurt others Because they put themselves first and choose their own ways over God and His loving ways God has given each of us a conscience an inborn sense of right and wrong In the Bible He also gives us the solution to suffering and all the other ills we bring upon ourselves It s a solution that s so simple it can be summed up in one word love Love does no harm to a neighbor Romans 13 10 God tries to guide us into doing what s loving and right but He won t force us God is not to blame for all the suffering in the world He s not some kind of monster that enjoys making people suffer It s not God who causes the pain death and heartache The truth is much of what we suffer is caused by people s selfishness and destructive attitudes and actions Tweet All Topics Views on Issues The Future Reflections on Life Relationship with God Hearing from God Bible Studies What are Viewpoints These articles are a small sample of our literature which covers a wide variety of spiritual and

be confident that He will pour out such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it Malachi 3 10 Give to others God blesses giving to others the needy good causes and His workers in addition to our tithes Let each one give as he purposes in his heart not grudgingly or of necessity for God loves a cheerful giver 2 Corinthians 9 7 Give and it will be given to you good measure pressed down shaken together and running over Luke 6 38 Thank the Lord for what you ve already got Whether God supplies through our work or unexpected means it s still His blessing and supply and He wants us to acknowledge that and thank Him Then when He sees that we re genuinely thankful and are praising Him for what He s already given us He s happy to give us more if we need it Let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name Hebrews 13 15 In everything give thanks 1 Thessalonians 5 18 Ask This may seem too obvious but sometimes you do not have because you do not ask James 4 2 Be specific when you pray for God s help financially Tell Him exactly what you need Sometimes this also means being humble enough to ask others for help when you need it Be a wise manager We need to remember that all that we have is given to us by God and that we re just the stewards or managers of it He s entrusted us with it and He expects us to manage it wisely Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful 1 Corinthians 4 2 Live economically and within your means Part of being a good manager is to be saving to be moderate and to avoid waste And don t spend money that you don t have for things that would be nice but are not absolutely necessary Going into debt or living for today hoping that you ll be able to pay off your debt tomorrow can lead to financial ruin Budget One of the best ways to manage money well is to have a budget and stick to it He who has a slack hand becomes poor but the hand of the diligent makes rich Proverbs 10 4 Have faith in God to supply your needs Many people focus solely on what they can do and often that s because they don t really expect God s help Without faith it is impossible to please Him for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him Hebrews 11 6 We must also do our part of course but then we must trust Him to do the rest what we can t do He says Behold I am the Lord the God of

  • Friction in the Workplace | The Family International
everything the other person is saying you convey consideration and respect Do that with the colleagues you re having trouble communicating with and you ll probably be surprised at how positively they respond and how open they are to your ideas and suggestions How do you become a better listener First of all you must want to listen You must sincerely have a desire to hear what the other person has to say If you already see yourself as one who likes to listen you might be thinking of social situations the give and take chitchat when interesting little tidbits are being exchanged But it is at times when the other person expresses an opinion contrary to your own that listening is most difficult but most important This is unselfish listening Unselfish listening is putting the brakes on that compelling desire to express yourself You need to demonstrate a sincere desire to hear and evaluate what the other person has to say before countering with your own position Good listening takes effort Notice the traits of the people whom you enjoy talking to the good listeners They show their interest with their eyes posture and the ways they react It s a sort of indescribable mood that says I enjoy listening to you You re important to me A calmness and patience about them tells you Take your time I have nothing more vital to do at the moment than to hear what you have to say Listening is one way to better fulfill the law of Christ which the Bible sums up as loving your neighbor as yourself Galatians 5 14 Matthew 22 37 39 Tweet All Topics Views on Issues The Future Reflections on Life Relationship with God Hearing from God Bible Studies What are Viewpoints These articles

  • How Can I Get More Done? | The Family International
requires an investment of thought self discipline and change You must be willing to carefully examine your attitudes and work habits and to change whatever thinking and behavior is holding you back Management by objectives This means thinking in terms of specific goals rather than in terms of procedures and regulations Ask questions Exactly what are we trying to accomplish Why should we be doing this Is there a better way To achieve success few things are more important than learning how to set goals and formulate plans to reach those goals Writing down your goals long range mid range and short range requires you to be specific That s the first step Be realistic Keep your goals practical and attainable And remember while some goals may be realistic when you set them life and circumstances change You haven t failed if you shift a goal or change a plan when necessary The Big Five One way to help yourself determine your priorities and stick to them is to list your top five goals and outline the necessary steps to achieve them Tape this list to your mirror or put it in your work area where you will be sure to see it every day Keep a second copy in your pocket or purse Ask the Lord The real secret of success of course is to pray each step of the way If you will ask God to show you what to work on next and how to go about it He will He will also give you the wisdom and strength you need to get the job done if you ask Him Keep trying Don t be discouraged if it doesn t happen all at once Old habits die hard but every day is a new chance to do
