she didn t like to cook She recalled her Home Economics class She was beating an egg with a fork The teacher said Not so much noise I don t want to hear any clicking when you re beating those eggs Now half a lifetime later Carol admitted That only made me want to do it more And I always think of that woman whenever I beat eggs How would that teacher react if she knew the only thing Carol remembers from her class is having been scolded Often the littlest comments have the biggest impact Choose another story Too Much Talk I was having a heart to heart conversation with my daughter About to enter her teen years I knew she would benefit from my reflections of how to survive those troubling pubescent times As I revved up for a helpful review of my main points I looked over in her direction She was staring into the middle distance with glazed eyes and slouched shoulders She d been turned off I d been tuned out Too much of a good thing had become another lecture Less is more I wish I d shared my sage advice in only 99 words Choose another story The Wrong Notes When Travis the only saxophone player in the Guilford School fifth grade band began his concert solo by playing Hot Cross Buns instead of Merrily We Roll Along he stopped waved his arm and said No wait That s not it Wrong one This is it To everyone s relief he then led the band in a spirited rendition of the correct number Our pursuit of excellence our preoccupation with perfection doesn t leave much room for mistakes even when someone is learning a complicated task Bravo to the performer who can make a mistake and confidently move on Choose another story Dead and Alive On a springtime walk in the woods I came upon an unusual sight Where a grove of sugar maples had stood last summer now there were only stumps Though disappointed I was curious to see that each stump was soaking wet and surrounded by a puddle of water even though it had not been raining Looking closer I realized that this wasn t water It was sap the raw material of maple syrup Loggers thought the tree was dead but the roots thought it was alive We are quick to make assumptions about what we cannot see Choose another story The Slow Learne r One sweltering summer day I sought relief on the screened porch An enormous housefly was bouncing against the screen trying to get out Feeling charitable I waited until it got to the door then swung it open But the fly kept bashing into the screen door anyway I pushed the door open further Still the fly ping ponged against the screen never knowing a right angle turn would set it free Finally I let the door swing shut When we don t see progress

we were hot sweaty and brain numb listening to the Joker s theme song over and over A few people began to leave What was happening Should we stay in line get a return on our time investment Should we leave and cut our losses It ll be closed for hours my daughter speculated That was it Instantly we were at the tail of a long line in the opposite direction as her words spread and people began to leave Our rumors and reputation spread faster than our actions Choose another story Crash Friendships I was zooming down the highway on the way to an appointment I d borrowed my wife s car a bright green VW Beetle Coming toward me was the identical car In the brief moment as we passed I could see the passengers smiling and waving We were friends in that instant Now this never happens when I drive my old Subaru Yet people seem desperate to discover something in common They ll grab the slimmest thread of shared interest and begin weaving a stronger relationship Perhaps we can use this strategy more often to create friendships build our communities Choose another story Always in Crisis At a local social service agency each case manager worked with up to ninety clients solving problems and dealing with difficult situations on a daily basis Their supervisors dashed from one disaster to the next while juggling meetings and paperwork Everyone wore a cell phone The most common comment was I m in crisis One summer most everyone took a week off to attend a workshop out of town During that time not a single client phoned with an earth shattering problem Somehow they took care of themselves I ve often wondered who really created all the emergencies Choose another story Room to Wiggle The steam room at the Y has just one switch on or off Flip the switch and wait Is it really on Something must be happening deep inside the plumbing guts of the health club but you don t know what until a spray of steam shoots into the small room That s when you know it s on A binary system is OK for computers but in real life there is wiggle room A lot can happen between on and off left and right liberal and conservative How often do we needlessly confine ourselves to only two options Choose another story Heartfelt Giving You might assume that Generous Street in Brattleboro Vermont would be broad and long with prosperous businesses and large stately homes In fact it s probably the shortest in town just one block long Only eight modest houses line this dead end street Some may think Generous Street is misnamed but I don t agree Generosity can come from skimming off one s excess wealth However it can also come from a big heart a spirit of abundance a realization that I have enough for both myself and to share We don

Roll Number One from Alan Montgue of Chicago The e mail came out at 4pm and everyone s eyes opened wide in shock There we were at the top of the Sears Tower working away hard It s been a tough year in the software business and at times we felt like we had been swimming upstream never able to relax for fear of being swept back The business was certainly taking a caning Some of us felt like we were just plodding on slowly and steadily hoping that the Hares who we compete with would tire themselves out Some just followed the current strategy blindly like sheep being led who knows where Most of us were afraid to speak up and when given the opportunity said nothing After all this was our work home and it s better to be inside the tent peeing out than outside peeing in But most of all we need a leader someone who could help us succeed and work the Magic on the business Was the new CEO that man Only time will tell BTW Our new CEO was announced on Tuesday evening Thanks for your contribution Alan and congratulations for writing a story that s relevant to your own situation The following story using the same roll of the dice is from Nanette Helgager of Niagra Falls NY I am feeling tired these days so I walk with a cane So you ask why I feel tired As I take a look at the tasks before me I am sure others may feel the same way there are so many chiefs so few Indians and even less sheep that are willing to blindly follow the leader when they hear that voice calling I feel like a salmon swimming up stream to spawn
