  • The Siege UK tour begins! | The Freedom Theatre
    of the Nativity in Bethlehem during the height of the second Intifada While the dramatic scenes of the 2002 siege made headlines worldwide those trapped inside the church were not heard With The Siege The Freedom Theatre tells the story from the perspective of fighters clergy and civilians who lived through those fateful 39 days In a highly pressurised situation where choices become about life and death the characters in The Siege are forced to reflect on the moral and ethical implications of their actions and decisions Through these characters the play raises discussion on the consequences of lengthy oppression and the complexities of the wider political and social context in which the siege of the Church of the Nativity took place The UK tour of The Siege includes a string of performances in ten locations across Britain among them the Battersea Arts Centre in London The REP in Birmingham Nottingham Playhouse and The Tron in Glasgow Receiving outstanding reviews during its West Bank run The Siege has gained national media attention in the UK ahead of the tour and sparked discussion with prominent artists such as Mark Rylance Samuel West Miriam Margolyes Mark Wright Caryl Churchill Howard Brenton Ken Loach and Mark Thomas showing support for The Freedom Theatre and freedom of expression for Palestinian artists generally Read the statement by Artists for Palestine UK here Performances of The Siege will be accompanied by post show discussions as well as workshop programmes screenings and live events with the aim of encouraging cross cultural dialogue around notions of freedom justice and equality I hope it will be a two way experience says Nabeel Al Raee co creator of The Siege The greatest thing for us is to meet people face to face and discuss our artistic project as well as

  • Shakespeare workshop at The Freedom Theatre | The Freedom Theatre
    of Shakespeare Currently our students are taking a workshop with British director Di Trevis who has worked a t the Royal National Theatre the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House The students learn about the Elizabethan court through its dances study the structure of the texts by learning about rhetorical speech and poetry They have to tackle for the first time translations in Classical Arabic as well as the struggles actors universally undergo to make written text their own and to understand complexity of character and how every part will relate to something important in each actors personal experience This is why to pitch yourself against some of the most brilliant dramatic text in the world teaches much about acting and more about life says Di Trevis The company perform as if they are an Elizabethan company acting for the Queen Each of the nine actors recreate a scene from one of the great plays exploring monologues from Henry V and Midsummer Night s Dream as well as Queen Katherine s plea to Henry VIII and four famous soliloquies from Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet The performance ends in the traditional Elizabethan way with a jig The students

    students and be challenged to direct them in scenes prepared for the workshop About Di Trevis Di Trevis was the first woman to run a company at Britain s Royal National Theatre In 2000 she adapted for the stage with Harold Pinter Pinter s unfilmed cinema adaptation of Proust s Remembrance of Things Past The production which transferred to the Olivier stage in 2001 was described as ravishing by critic Nicholas de Jongh in the Evening Standard and won an Olivier Award Trevis has also worked extensively at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House Trevis has had a long standing affiliation with the US directing and teaching in New York Los Angeles Chicago and Pittsburgh For over a decade Trevis has been teaching actors and directors in her international workshops She has taught in the UK the US France Germany Austria Palestine and Cuba Gary Oldman Kenneth Branagh and Rupert Everett have all passed through her workshops and she has a following of young actors in London who regularly attend her Sunday workshop Between 2003 7 Trevis was Head of Directing at Drama Centre London Trevis published her own book Being a Director A Life in Theatre
