  • The Caretaker | The Freedom Theatre
and searching for some sense of identity in a world that is constantly changing and unreliable The Caretaker an adaptation of Harold Pinter s celebrated play deals with the distance between reality and fantasy family relationships and most importantly the struggle for power The play is also about the absence of meaningful communication and how each of us is trapped in our own delusions isolated and alone None of the characters can be trusted to speak the truth or are able to connect to each other in any meaningful way All are to some extent deceptive as they twist reality in order to manipulate one another and take control The Caretaker is serious and funny but underneath the action is an undercurrent of fear The play shows how family is able to band together against an intrusion even as they still seem worlds apart It s the first time at a Pinter play I ve seen children laughing The script managed to make the play serious and funny at the same time Very talented actors with strong presence very powerful audience members The Caretaker received support from Ford Foundation and from Sida as part of the PAN program 2012 08

  • While Waiting | The Freedom Theatre
rumor than reality As part of their final graduation project third year students from The Freedom Theatre s Acting School performed While Waiting an adaptation of Samuel Beckett s masterpiece Waiting for Godot It is one of the most important and challenging literary works of modernism The Freedom Theatre s version hews to the play s story line of a pair of friends who experience a mental unraveling as they wait in vain for Godot But the play veers from the Beckett text with subtle and overt references to Palestinian life The play asks who and what one becomes while waiting for freedom how to behave toward those who share the wait and how to live a semblance of a normal life without normalizing the occupation without giving in to it or giving up on the notion of freedom Focus is on the search for meaning solidarity and friendship within the repetition itself While Waiting serves as an allegory to the relationship between the students of The Freedom Theatre Acting School and their deceased teacher and mentor Juliano Mer Khamis The students performance of the play is in itself an act of fidelity and healing after a meaningless and tragic loss While Waiting is a memorial a political statement a reinvention and a piece of art Columbia Spectator While Waiting received support from MDG Achievement Fund In 2011 the Acting School was supported by Sida 2011 08 01 yana Teaser Director Udi Aloni Assistant Director Zoe Lafferty Cast Mariam Abu Khaled Didi Batool Taleb Gogo Rami Hwayel Pozo Momeen Suitat Lucky 1 Rabea Torkman Lucky 2 Eyad Hurani Lucky 3 Adi Khalifa Joker Melai Mer Khamis Messenger Crew Production Manager Sophia Harb Light Technician Jacob Gough Costume Design Mish Mish Ouri Makeup Omia Salman Stage Consultant Fleurian Atti Lighting Design

  • Alice in Wonderland | The Freedom Theatre
she is and what is right or wrong normal or abnormal Wonderland is such a strange dangerous world yet Alice realizes that the other world which purports to be the real one is the one where she is robbed of her freedom As she journeys through Wonderland she grows and learns how to make her own choices The illusionary characters in Wonderland reflect reality but at the same time turn it upside down By doing so the performance shines a different spotlight on today s Palestinian society It is a subversive radical humorous extravagant larger than life production that manages to tackle issues such as the position of girls and women in the community while simultaneously questioning many of the social restrictions that limit the roles available to both women and men Alice has an energetic verve and visual originality that would rival the most daring European and U S productions including the Red Queen s rousing lip synch of Blondie s song One Way or Another I m gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha and a sexy tango at the Mad Hatter s Tea Party to Freddie Mercury s I Want to Break Free Theatre Communications Group It will be our biggest scandal yet I hope Juliano Mer Khamis The production of Alice in Wonderland received support from Al Jazeera Children s Channel In 2011 the Acting School programme was supported by Sida Freedom to Create and UNFPA 2011 02 01 yana One comment Pingback The Closure of el Hakawati Theatre and the Complementarity of Stones and Puppets radicalmonkeyclown Teaser Directors Juliano Mer Khamis Zoe Lafferty Cast Batool Taleb Alice Mom in Switat Caterpillar Eyad Hourani The Mad Hatter Maryam Abu Khaled Red Queen Micaela Miranda White Queen Rabe a Turkman White Rabbit Rami Hwayel Tweedle Dee Nabil Al Raee

  • Men in the Sun | The Freedom Theatre
tragedy but it is also a narrative of dreaming of and remembering the past The tale created by and about Palestinians is told in a human rather than political approach making it poignant for any person hurt by betrayal falsehood loneliness or despair Ghassan Khanafani is considered to be a pioneer of the novel and short story in the Arab World and one of the most famous Palestinian writers His stories create beautifully crafted images based on how the impossible becomes possible in the lives of ordinary people in terms of horror beyond belief And how dreaming is futile as long as there is no freedom Today we mark the anniversary of the assassination by the Israeli Intelligence Service of one of Palestine s greatest sons Writer artist intellectual politician Arab Nationalist and most of all Palestinian patriot Ghassan Khanafani The Freedom Theatre presents a tribute to his life and work Included is one of his most powerful short stories We believe that the world needs to listen as much as possible to the voices of Palestinians who have given indications of what our focus should be on and who refuse to be passive subjects of a narrative dominated by Israeli words and deeds but who deserve to enter into the awareness of all who are interested in their situation and to maintain the role of protagonists in their own story When the Mossad killed him together with his 9 year old niece they informed the world that they had killed a Guerilla which was the language used back then for militant patriots and the world either rejoiced or yawned Today we honour him as one of the greats of his people Josh Perlstein Director The production of Men in the Sun received support from AM Qattan Foundation UNFPA Sida

  • Animal Farm | The Freedom Theatre
set the farm up as a commune where all animals are equal however disparities soon emerge and the commune s ideologies are manipulated and twisted by those in positions of power With the focal point of George Orwell s Animal Farm evolving around the corrupting force of power The Freedom Theatre s adaptation gives this theme a decidedly Palestinian twist by connecting it closely to internal social and political issues The Freedom Theatre s adaptation certainly stays true to Orwell s fierce critique of revolutionaries imitating their oppressors The head pig Napoleon flanks himself with two black clad Kalashnikov toting dogs with sunglasses After moving into the farmer s house Napoleon hangs a giant portrait of himself in a dark suit and tie above the farmyard The human who comes to talk business at the play s end wears a green army uniform and speaks Hebrew The Freedom Theatre s version of Animal Farm gives a unique perspective on current events and allows the audience to reflect critically on their own reality in relation to at once different and similar circumstances As such staging this play emphasises the importance of contemporary art critical approaches and freedom of speech and brings out the potential of theatre in generating social change By all accounts George Orwell would be proud The National 2009 02 01 yana TEASER DIRECTORS Nabil Al Raee and Micaela Miranda ARTISTIC SUPERVISION Juliano Mer Khamis CAST Faysal Abu Alheja Boxer Eyad Hourani Squealer Rami Hwael Old Major Dana Jarrar Snowball Batoul Taleb Molly Qais Assaadi Benjamin Rabe a Turkman Clover Haroun Alrasheed Moses Mo men Switat Jones Ahmad Al Rokh Napoleon Zina Zaarour Chicken CREW Set design and construction Linn Reinius and Gunnar Bergsten Production Manager Lighting Designer Jacob Gough Décor Ahmad Matahen Sami Assaadi Ahmad Assaadi Sharaf Assaadi
