    drama therapy forum theatre story telling voice and movements creative arts implementation practical classroom planning with supervising puppet production drawing painting and visual arts Workshops were facilitated by Agneta Regell Fidaa Ataya Iman Aoun and Mohammad Dabdoub Agneta Regell the course supervisor writes about her experiences of working with the first group consisting of nine participants who work in Special Education in Kabatia close to Jenin who graduated in mid June The first Drama in Education DiE group at The Freedom Theatre has come a long way and made a dramatic and successful journey into the understanding of the pleasure and purpose of Drama as a learning method Only nine months ago they took their first hesitant steps into unknown games and exercises and new pedagogical concepts There they found new understanding of the use and benefits of Drama as an Educational Method Nine months might seem a very long time to devote to extra training given that at the same time you must take care of all the everyday tasks and make ends meet both at work and at home But at the same time nine months is a relatively short period if you consider the great educational progress made by the group According to course evaluations meeting not only different educational methods and theories but also course leaders from various cultures and disciplines has highly added to the worth and appreciation of the course The feeling of being all together a team connected in this project also gave a strong experience of capability strength and courage to dare to go on by oneself in the classroom Now we are looking forward to the next step part two of the DiE course at The Freedom Theatre to broaden and deepen the insights of the necessity of aesthetic methods in

    Many commentators had begun to question whether this unique arts organisation located in the war ravaged Jenin Refugee Camp would find the strength to continue But two years on the Freedom Theatre is in the midst of a great resurgence Supporters old and new are returning in droves to reinforce the impact of its work as The Freedom Theatre engages new communities and new art forms in its mission of demonstrating the revolution possible through culture The second anniversary of the murder of Juliano Mer Khamis on April 4 marks the opening of another in house production at The Freedom Theatre the second production this year alone The play called Suicide Note from Palestine is a window into the younger generation of Palestine a generation just as hopeless about their present as they are about the future The play s main character is Amal who one day before her final exams has a concerning nightmare she is Palestine and she has decided to die Amal s nightmare drafts between confusion torture and despair notions set as strange characters that symbolise some of the key players in world politics that shape the land history politics and uphold the occupation of her country Interrogated and manipulated Amal is forced into a comatose state and can barely speak Suicide Note from Palestine is a physical video visual art performance using social satire to present an image of the national trauma of the Palestinian people As Juliano has taught and shared with us we continue to build the steps of a professional Palestinian theatre with a meaningful message resistance through art with the highest standards for the young generation that will build the grounds for hope for Palestine says the play s director Nabil Al Raee Especially on the day of the second anniversary

    Laurita Solidarity walk participants injured and arrested by Israeli Forces They threw us all to the ground threatening to pepper spray our eyes and it was during these moments that they twisted the arm of Alia a Palestinian coordinator of the Freedom Bus They also twisted my leg I am still limping and the medics think that I have a torn ligament Luke was arrested and has been released to house arrest pending deportation Sonja de Vries participant in the March Freedom Ride On March 29th The Freedom Theatre s Freedom Bus together with the South Hebron Hills Popular Struggle Committee organised a solidarity walk through the South Hebron Hills The walk was the last event of the 13 day March Freedom Ride and brought together about 150 artists activists community leaders and students from Palestine and abroad Participants attempted to walk through five of eight communities facing forced eviction within the 918 Firing Zone an area of the South Hebron Hills used by the Israeli forces for military training 1000 people living in this region have been issued with eviction orders All homes in these villages are faced with demolition The Israeli army tried to stop the walk and attacked and injured several participants One international participant was detained by Israeli forces and placed under house arrest pending deportation His arrest followed the attempted arrest of several leaders of the popular struggle movement in the South Hebron Hills Sonja de Vries reports We had all been schooled in the attitude and practice of non violence and the village leaders reminded us once more even if a settler hits you keep walking Don t interact with the soldiers just keep walking The soldiers began to single out some of the women and youth from the village Things started to escalate
