  • Yom al Nakba | The Freedom Theatre
    people were forced to leave their homes many killed and many hundreds of villages were depopulated and destroyed During 1947 49 around 80 percent of the Palestinian inhabitants of what became Israel fled or were expelled The state of Israel was established on 78 percent of historic Palestine Later a series of laws passed by the first Israeli government prevented the refugees from returning to their homes or claiming their property They and many of their descendants remain refugees to this day their right to return denied Palestinian refugees are the largest remaining refugee population in the world May 15th is Nakba Day Yom al Nakba is a day of remembering and honouring experiences from Al Nakba At The Freedom Theatre in Jenin Refugee Camp we will honour this year s Yom al Nakba by getting together to share our families stories of the Nakba and screen a film about the events around 1948 It would be an offence against the principles of elementary justice if these innocent victims were denied the right to return to their homes while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine and indeed at least offer the threat of permanent replacement of the Arab refugees who have

  • Meet & Greet – student presentation | The Freedom Theatre
    All the students at The Freedom Theatre School were present along with their teachers and the theatre s employees from the financial director to the housekeeper Because of the structure of work in The Freedom Theatre more or less all staff members have a role to play in the theatre s productions The Meet Greet was also a good opportunity for the new students to better get to know the employees at the theatre and vice versa Micaela Miranda director of the Theatre School introduced the upcoming presentation by saying that it is inspired by the legendary Greek myth about Medusa intertwined with the students personal stories Micaela Miranda is directing the play together with Nabil Al Raee artistic director at The Freedom Theatre Staff members and students then took turns introducing themselves and their role in the presentation as well as their general responsibilities in the theatre Many students shared personal accounts and expressed hopes that the upcoming presentation will be successful One student said I feel like I lived in exile before I came to the school The Theatre School has made me challenge my fears and interact with people When I came here I found myself and

  • The Freedom Ride – coming soon! | The Freedom Theatre
    During these nine days people from around the world will travel through the occupied West Bank coming together to share experiences build alliances and stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine The group of actors that was formed at the end of last year has developed into an ensemble with members from across the West Bank as well as from Nazareth They hold regular trainings and performances connecting with communities that will be part of the Freedom Ride Recent Freedom Bus events include a female only performance in Faquaa north of Jenin where the women of the village got together to share stories from their everyday lives and a performance in Dheisheh Refugee Camp outside Bethlehem Using storytelling one of the most ancient rituals for developing support and connection between group members the Freedom Bus has already given voice to hundreds of accounts bringing them to life through improvisational theatre Audience members often give feedback on how the ensemble is highly successful in communicating the essence of their experiences At the latest Faquaa event the women repeatedly told the actors It was exactly like that The Freedom Bus has also helped raise awareness about the difficult circumstances under which many Palestinian communities exist The events held so far have facilitated meetings between community members and organisations researchers journalists scholars artists and human rights advocates who have helped to broadcast their experiences One example is Faquaa where village members have established an ongoing partnership with EWASH The Emergency Water Sanitation and Hygiene group which is a coalition of international and local organisations working in the water and sanitation sector This is only the beginning of the Freedom Bus project and we are very excited about the outcomes it can bring We welcome you to join us if not in body

  • Photography and writing workshops | The Freedom Theatre
    One participant documented the Bedouin who are commonly known as travelers but in fact do not move much nowadays and have always had strong ties to the rest of Palestinian society Another photo project features wives visiting their husbands in prison while another describes prisoners releases from prison and the journey back home to their families One photographer documented how taking tawjihe final exams is a rite of passage completing the journey from boy to man Another participant documented the journey she recently made to a Tel Aviv water park visiting forbidden territory The writing projects feature stories from real life including a famous writer who became a falafel vendor to support his family a family who were trapped in their kitchen while Israeli soldiers were shooting at the house as well as a girl who got caught in a curfew with her brother being told by an IDF soldier that if he liked her crisps he would let them go if not he would kill one of them a young soldier s dark sense of humour I want to teach them that reality is more inspiring and powerful to write about than fiction says Mona Hassan They are sitting
