  • Annual Report 2011 online | The Freedom Theatre
s Annual Report 2011 looks back on a devastating year for the theatre In April Juliano Mer Khamis co founder of The Freedom Theatre and its visionary leader was murdered The staff and members of the theatre had to deal not only with the shock of losing a beloved colleague teacher and friend but also the uncertainty of not knowing who killed Juliano and why In addition the theatre faced ongoing harassment by the Israeli army which rendered three innocent staff members imprisoned and many more interrogated and beaten All were later released without charge Against all odds the staff board and members managed to keep the theatre from collapsing and thanks to the support from friends around the world we got through the storm A period of contemplation and reorganizing followed from which we came out stronger in our commitment to keeping The Freedom Theatre going and once again thriving When the year came to an end all our activities were once again up and running as well as new ones initiated We are looking ahead towards a promising new year with major projects such as a Street Theatre production and the Freedom Bus event that you are invited to join read more about it on www freedombus ps We also hope to engage a new group of students in the Acting School and several of the former students that graduated last year have joined the theatre as promising actors or trainers Nevertheless we will not forget and we will not cease to demand unconditionally that those responsible for Juliano s death be brought to justice Just as The Freedom Theatre was built on the inspiration and legacy of Arna Juliano s mother so will its future work be built on the legacy of Juliano It will carry on

  • New information about Nabil and Zakaria | The Freedom Theatre
These allegations were found to be groundless after the first two weeks of detention Nevertheless the Israeli security service continued to ask for his prolonged detention under this grave suspicion and meanwhile tried to obtain evidence on other issues This proved to be fruitless and on June 28 a military judge ordered Nabil s release after no evidence had been obtained against him However an appeal by the military prosecution was approved by the military court of appeals The prosecution argued that they only wanted to perform another lie detector test on Nabil Results of such tests are inadmissible in courts including military ones Nabil was promised that he would be released once he had passed the test Under the effect of this false promise he gave some more information innocent information about driving his neighbour Zakaria Zubeidi in town and buying him cigarettes occasionally shooting in the air with Zakaria s private gun once at a new year party and passed the test successfully The military prosecution used this information to charge Nabil and the promise to release him was not kept One of the main accusations in the charge sheet is assisting a wanted person Zakaria Zubeidi The prosecution withheld any information about the amnesty granted to Zakaria since 2007 accusing Nabil of assisting him from 2006 on This despite the fact that Nabil only started working at The Freedom Theatre in 2007 and had very limited contact with Zakaria at that time The prosecution requested to keep Nabil in detention until the end of the proceedings against him That could be for a very long period of time On July 11th the judge again decided that Nabil would be released However the prosecution was given another 24 hours to appeal A new hearing will be held on July 12th Zakaria Zubeidi co founder of The Freedom Theatre has been incarcerated by the Palestinian Authority since May 13 Without justification or indication of the charges against him and contrary to Palestinian law he was transferred to Jericho and later transferred from a civil to a military court Zakaria has also been subjected to inhumane treatment and his lawyer has not been allowed to meet him in private Zakaria is a former activist of the armed Palestinian resistance who in 2007 decided to stop all military actions and commit himself to cultural resistance Despite this he has been arrested twice without justification in December 2011 and again in May 2012 Micaela Miranda Nabil Al Raee s wife was for the first time able to meet Zakaria in prison together with some of his family members and relay the words of Zakaria to the outside world Zakaria tried to let us know that he had been forced to stand tied with his arms up for two days in a row without being able to sit down or sleep He has had pain in his legs and back since then He also mentioned having to drink water from the toilet and

family For two weeks he was not allowed to communicate with his lawyer or have any contact with his family Nor were any charges made against him Once suspicions were eventually put forward Nabil was first suspected of keeping information that could lead to the identification of Juliano Mer Khamis murderer In a later court hearing the Israeli prosecution claimed that Nabil was involved in terror activities Then in a recent court hearing the military judge declared that no evidence of any illegal activity had come up during the almost one month of interrogations and that Nabil would be released However the prosecution was given a 48 hour period to appeal and put forward this third equally absurd accusation against Nabil Micaela Miranda Nabil s wife attended the court hearing today This farce started with them accusing Nabil of being involved somehow in the murder of Juliano then they accused him of terror activities and now it s something else Every court hearing we go to there s another accusation it s ridiculous and it s obvious that they are trying to find a justification for having kept Nabil incarcerated for so long Smadar Ben Natan says This shows that they really don t have anything to hold against him If these are crimes then it means that everybody in Jenin camp are guilty of them I hope that the judge in the next court hearing will understand this and that they will release him The Freedom Theatre Foundation in Sweden and The Freedom Theatre association in Jenin with its friends associations in USA France Italy Scotland and Germany rebuke these accusations as pure fabrications that are part of the Israeli occupying force s attempt to destroy The Freedom Theatre entirely Maybe they thought we would break down when Juliano

  • Zakaria on hunger strike, Nabil’s detention extended | The Freedom Theatre
necessary he will continue the hunger strike until death The Freedom Theatre s Artistic Director Nabil Al Raee s detention in Israeli prison has once again been extended While the judge at the latest military court hearing on July 1st very clearly pointed out that Nabil was not suspected of any crime his detention was still extended for 48 hours and now recently for another 4 days The Israeli prosecution first claimed that Nabil possessed information relating to the death of Juliano Mer Khamis and later claimed that Nabil was involved in terror activities On July 2nd new charges were brought up by the Israeli prosecution who is now accusing Nabil of helping a wanted person Another military court hearing is scheduled for this Thursday July 5th Nabil will then have been incarcerated for 30 days These 30 days included his own birthday as well as his wife s and his daughter s birthdays Nabil s wife Micaela Miranda attended the hearing on June 28th but was not allowed to speak to her husband What I experienced in the military court was a theatre play This was not the law being upheld this was a humiliating farce says Micaela Miranda The Freedom Theatre is now beginning to seriously feel the consequences of the unlawful detention of its Artistic Director The opening of the theatre s latest production an adaptation of the Caretaker by Harold Pinter directed by Nabil Al Raee was scheduled for 1st of July and is now postponed indefinitely Meanwhile The Freedom Theatre s three year professional Acting School programme is deprived of one of its managers and head teachers The Freedom Theatre is a space where youth and children can reverse the damaging consequences of decades of military occupation and discrimination When the safety of this space

  • Scottish cultural figures support The Freedom Theatre | The Freedom Theatre
has also not been given access to his family Zubeidi is well known for his determination to eschew armed resistance to the Israeli occupation in favor of cultural resistance In the light of Mr Zubeidi s continuing arrests and detentions and the tragic unsolved murder of Juliano Mer Khamis the late Artistic Director of The Freedom Theatre in April of 2011 right in front of the Freedom Theatre and from ARNA S CHILDREN the documentary feature film produced and directed by Mr Mer Khamis it is abundantly clear that we all need more Theatre not less The children of all refugee camps need more Theatre more Arts activity not less The Freedom Theatre stands for and actively engenders more personal freedom and free expression not less in Jenin specifically and across the world by way of its ongoing courageous selfless example Nabil Al Raee is an artist not a criminal but apparently in the West Bank being an artist at The Freedom Theatre is now a crime The IDF in its continuing harassment of The Freedom Theatre staff has taken a man into custody who has chosen to resist through purely artistic means We believe that Mr Al Raee is being targeted in an effort to intimidate and harass The Freedom Theatre due to its vital work in serving and empowering refugee youth and its artistic expression of political and personal viewpoints The Theatre community in the Scotland is intensely concerned about this matter We denounce these arrests and detentions We demand the immediate release of Nabil Al Raee and Zakaria Zubeidi If they continue to remain incarcerated we demand that they be afforded proper legal protections due to any person under the law including public hearings where the reasons for their arrests are made public continuing access to counsel
