  • Juliano, one year laterجوليانو، بعد عام واحد | The Freedom Theatre
Khamis co founder of The Freedom Theatre in Jenin Refugee Camp There was no one else it could have been First response as my first response always is Try to get more information Figure out who needs to be told what needs to be done When the emotions came they were as complex as my feelings about Juliano It would be an overstatement to call him a friend though I had socialized with him on many occasions It didn t feel accurate to call him a colleague though I had worked with him for years on the board of the US based Friends of the Jenin Freedom Theatre I respected Juliano greatly and admired him deeply though I don t think I ever communicated that to him But he also frustrated and alarmed me at times In fact the last time I saw Juliano my co board members and I argued with him for hours I left The Freedom Theatre in Jenin Refugee Camp the following morning with a sense of impending doom I had no idea however that the doom would take the form three months later of a masked assailant pumping bullets at close range into Juliano s head and chest outside the theatre One year later and Juliano s murderer has not been apprehended One year later and Juliano s colleagues and students at The Freedom Theatre are still dealing with the loss and the trauma including the continued trauma of being targeted by the Israeli military in repeated attacks against the theatre and its staff and students Yet one year later The Freedom Theatre continues And continues to use art as a powerful form of protest and resistance I hope you will take a moment to remember or learn about Juliano I hope you will find

  • Statement in memory of Julianoبيان في ذكرى جوليانو | The Freedom Theatre
ذكرى جوليانو Dear friends It was in Leipzig two years ago that I first met Juliano and felt that great magnetism of his and of The Freedom Theatre I have very strong and very positive memories of the time I spent with you a bit more than a year ago February 19th March 4th 2011 And I remember the shock shortly thereafter learning about Juliano s murder Reading your news updates from that moment on has not been easy Your work in maintaining an extremely important and active organisation in the face of continuous harassment is indeed heroic And it is obvious that the spirit of Juliano lives on in that work I have spread information about The Freedom Theatre through lectures here and in England and I hope to have an article ready for publication soon And I also hope I ll have the opportunity to come back to visit and teach at some point My thoughts are with you not leastwise on this memorial day I mourn Juliano with you and I honor your spirit your inspirational insistence on keeping up the cultural fight to free Palestine Sincerely Robert Lyons Senior Lecturer Theatre Studies Department of Literature History

  • Photography Workshop in Faquaa | The Freedom Theatre
where residents are denied access to water resources that irrigate the lush fields of Israel which lay on the other side of the dividing fence This is the fence that the Israelis put up in order to confiscate the land and water resources of Faquaa The name of the village Faquaa means spring water bubbles in Arabic but access to water here disappeared long ago The children acting as hosts took our photography students around to show them some of the ways that they have adapted to the water shortage such as using containers and large plastic tarps to collect rain water At the edge of the village next to many homes lays the Israeli constructed separation fence It is a thick mass of razor wire armed with motion sensors that detects if anyone gets too close There is a road on the Israel side that sits next to the fence The children are afraid to get too close to it as they are afraid of the soldiers Jaish coming The children of Faquaa explained that there are underground wells on the israeli side that are not being used wells that at one point the residents of Faquaa had access to They said that the lack of clean water has contributed to many being very ill as they showed us the murky brown water the people in the village collect and that getting fresh water brought into the village is very expensive Photographs were taken of the well that holds the rain water giant drums of dirty water that are used for drinking washing dishes and bathing the tarp they put on the ground to collect the rain water for the well and the daunting fence that separates them from the lush and green fields of Israel Dr Farha one
