  • Playback Performances with Bedouin Communities | The Freedom Theatre
    their lands as they are located in an area that is strategically important for further expansion of illegal Israeli settlements Actors from The Freedom Theatre recently held playback theatre performances with Bedouin communities who shared lived accounts relating to home demolitions harassment by the Israeli army and lack of access to clean water and health facilities We also learned about the strength of these people as they seek to retain their land and their livelihoods says Faisal Abu Alheja actor and project coordinator at The Freedom Theatre The performances are part of the preparations for the Freedom Bus ride in late September An ensemble of Palestinian actors and musicians will spend nine days traveling to key sites of oppression and resistance within the West Bank The ensemble will translate life stories of community members into improvised text sound movement music and poetry Performances will take place in community centers theaters and at site specific locations such as checkpoints settlements olive groves home demolition sites and the Wall Through live video links Palestinians in Gaza Israel and the Diaspora will be invited to share their stories The Freedom Bus will also be a focal point for supporters around the world who

  • The Freedom Theatre Goes into the Streets! | The Freedom Theatre
    dance and acrobatics training is part of the preparations for a street theatre performance that will be staged in Guimarães Portugal the European Capital of Culture 2012 in August and later in Jenin Chris Keighley a veteran of the UK parkour scene and Mia Hansen artistic co director of the Street theatre project recently joined forces to host a series of workshops focused on dynamic techniques of moving freely through our everyday environment In these workshops young members of The Freedom Theatre were joined by students from the Palestinian Circus School Together they worked on improving both their physical strength and their ability to overcome obstacles and challenges in life It has been a great way to focus and unleash some of the powerful energy of the students to build up stamina and find a language as a group explains Mia Hansen We have explored creative ways of using these new skills turning them into theatrical actions relations between people and images Saber one of The Freedom Theatre s Acting School students was particularly fascinated by parkour When I play parkour I feel like someone has given me an injection of adrenaline I feel something I can t explain I

    world The balance of power shifts between them and Aston s brother Mick as the stranger slowly attempts to take over the house Soon we understand that the characters are fighting for survival and searching for some sense of identity in a world that is constantly changing and unreliable The Freedom Theatre s latest in house production The Caretaker is an adaptation of Harold Pinter s celebrated play performed by the Acting School students and directed by Nabil Al Raee The Caretaker is a psychological study of family relationships and the struggle for power between two brothers Mick and Aston and a stranger that Aston brings home At first the stranger seems to be a victim but slowly he attempts to take over the house Each of the characters is fighting for survival and searching for some sense of identity in a world that is constantly changing and unreliable The Caretaker is serious and funny but underneath the action is an undercurrent of fear The play shows how family is able to band together against an intrusion even as they still seem worlds apart Cast Aston Alaa Shehadeh Davies Motaz Malhees Mick Saber Abu Ashreen Director Nabil Al Raee Artistic
