  • The Jewish Museum - Collection - The Son of the Rabbi and His Daughter, Marriage at the Synagogue, 1935
    London and Dieppe His career is said to have begun in the company of Monet Renoir and Manet and to have ended within the realm of the Bloomsbury set Concentrating on portraits of these acquaintances in the bravura style of the French based Italian Giovanni Boldini his elite sitters included Proust Henry James Degas Rodin and Cocteau The depiction of the seemingly unsophisticated subjects in Marriage at the Synagogue is thus a radical departure from Blanche s usual interests The sobriety of the father and daughter surprising for the joyous occasion indicated by the title their pale faces and the menacing guard who looms in the background add to the ambiguity of the scene Their East European dress implies that they may be foreign born and perhaps recent immigrants to France While the two are hardly flattered by Blanche the study is sympathetic and shows the artist s concern for his subjects emotional state It is possible that Blanche intended this as a social statement arising from French reactions to Hitler s rise to power This could explain the guard s presence and the somber state of the protagonists Hitler s racism and totalitarian regime had indeed greatly disturbed the artist The year of this work witnessed the expulsion of three thousand foreigners from France and the establishment of new laws enforcing strict limitations on immigration Blanche may also have been aware of the internal dissension among French Jews which manifested itself in the way both Christians and Jews distinguished between the privileged status of native born Israelites and the foreign born Juifs Some of Blanche s ideas about Jews could have come in part from his intimate friendship with his next door neighbors in Dieppe the prominent Jewish family of the writer and librettist Ludovic Halévy These Israelites though known sympathizers with the plight of foreign Jewry were themselves totally assimilated Their close friendship is chronicled in Degas s beautiful pastel Six Amis à Dieppe which includes among others Ludovic and Daniel Halévy and Blanche Yet Blanche s own writings reveal a duality in his reactions to Jews On the one hand he considered them inbred and made negative mention of what he perceived as the Jewish manipulation of the art market on the other he regarded the large number of Jews in the Parisian art world at the time as a vigorous and noteworthy development Source Kleeblatt Norman L and Vivian B Mann TREASURES OF THE JEWISH MUSEUM New York The Jewish Museum 1986 pp 186 187 Bibliography Kleeblatt Norman L and Vivian B Mann TREASURES OF THE JEWISH MUSEUM New York The Jewish Museum 1986 pp 186 187 Provenance Christie s London December 4 1984 Lot 447 sold to anonymous Sotheby s Tel Aviv May 17 18 1985 Lot 110 sold to TJM This information may change as the result of ongoing research Other Works in Highlights article data cycle auto height calc data cycle timeout 0 data cycle easing linear data cycle speed 1000 data cycle

  • The Jewish Museum - Collection - Coffee Service Coffee Service Given as a Wedding Gift, 1769 (date of inscription)
    White salt glazed stoneware reached the peak of its popularity in the years 1750 70 when this coffee set was made The forms colors and decorative motifs of The Jewish Museum pieces can all be paralleled in other Staffordshire stoneware of the 1750s and 1760s As in other European centers of the period the potters of Staffordshire sought to imitate Chinese porcelains whose importation competed with the output of local factories For that reason they often favored decorative schemes based on Chinese porcelains such as the landscape vignette and the diaper panels alternating with single floral motifs on the interiors of The Jewish Museum s waste and sugar bowls Other Staffordshire ware with these interior decorative motifs have exteriors painted with Chinese figures The unique aspect of The Jewish Museum set is the substitution of a representation of a Jewish wedding and Hebrew inscriptions for the usual chinoiserie The scene on the platter shows six figures two officiants two witnesses the groom and a heavily veiled bride Instead of standing beneath a free standing marriage canopy the bridal couple is wrapped in a large prayer shawl This custom was depicted in several 18th century engravings though none appears to have served as a model for the painted scene An eagle at top center bears a banner inscribed with a biblical quotation which serves as a chronogram As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride So will your God rejoice over you 5 529 1769 Is 62 5 The verse has been inverted on the plate Further information is inscribed on the vessels on the coffee pot front Made in honor of Hillel son of Tuviah of b lessed m emory back and his wife Brendele daughter of Elazar Segel of blessed memory on the pitcher by Zvi Hirsh son of Abraham on the sugar bowl front and back in Amsterdam 24th of Sivvan 5 529 June 29 1769 and on its cover Anno 5529 in the year 5529 1769 The use of the word made in the inscription does not mean that Zvi Hirsh actually fashioned his wedding present but is a common way in older dedicatory inscriptions of expressing that an individual commissioned a work to be done It is only with this interpretation that one can reconcile the information in the inscription that the set was done in Amsterdam with the very clear artistic evidence that it was made and decorated in Staffordshire Source Kleeblatt Norman L Dr Vivian B Mann TREASURES OF THE JEWISH MUSEUM New York The Jewish Museum 1986 pp 104 105 Bibliography Kayser Stephen S and Guido Schoenberger eds JEWISH CEREMONIAL ART A GUIDE TO THE APPRECIATION OF THE ART OBJECTS USED IN SYNAGOGUE AND HOME PRINCIPALLY FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF THE JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY OF AMERICA Philadelphia Jewish Publication Society of America 1959 no 170 Kleeblatt Norman L Dr Vivian B Mann TREASURES OF THE JEWISH MUSEUM New York The Jewish Museum 1986 pp 104 105 Art et Culture SHALOM
