  • "Venus" (Seated Woman) · The Walters Art Museum · Works of Art
    this piece acquired by Henry Walters in 1914 is that original The figure of a nude women sits on the ground with her knees raised and her ankles crossed holding in her right hand a strap or ribbon attached to a quiver containing roses and with her left grasping more roses which lie beside her on some drapery A statue meeting this descripiton was shown in the Salon of 1769 however other versions exist and as they are not signed it is difficult to be sure which one was shown A version very closely resembling this one can be found in the Hermitage St Petersburg which comes with a gilt wood base The composition seems to have been well known in the late eighteenth century See Henry Hawley Tassaert s Venus not Falconet s Flora Antologia di Belle Arti La Scultura Studi in onore di Andrew S Ciechanowiecki Nuova Serie 48 51 1994 pp 100 106 This piece is fully carved in the round Conservation Examined in preparation for exhibition Cleaned in preparation for exhibition Date Description Narrative 9 24 2015 Examination Examined 9 24 2015 Treatment Cleaned Exhibitions French Painting and Sculpture The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York

    hollows On reaching a proper distance a signal is given and they all start at once with frightful yells commence racing around the herd drawing their circle closer and closer until the whol body is huddled together in confusion Now they begin firing and as this throws them into a headlong panic and furious rage each man selects his animal wheeling and coursing through the affrighted herd the dexterity and grace of the Indians and the thousands upon thousands of Buffalo moving in every direction over an illimitable prairie form a scene altogether that in the whole world beside cannot be matched A J Miller extracted from The West of Alfred Jacob Miller 1837 In July 1858 William T Walters commissioned 200 watercolors at twelve dollars apiece from Baltimore born artist Alfred Jacob Miller These paintings were each accompanied by a descriptive text and were delivered in installments over the next twenty one months and ultimately were bound in three albums Transcriptions of field sketches drawn during the 1837 expedition that Miller had undertaken to the annual fur trader s rendezvous in the Green River Valley in what is now western Wyoming these watercolors are a unique record of the
