    speaker talk about how our resources affected the history of the Pocono region Fred introduced speaker Jim Forcella who will present a two hour talk about Adolf Hitler the making of a monster The first hour was presented at tonight s meeting and the talk will conclude on June 16th Making of a Monster Adolf Hitler Adolf Hitler was born in Austria in 1889 to an angry domineering father His mother was the third wife and also a niece of his father Adolf was born a Catholic sang in the choir and at one time even considered becoming a priest He was spoiled by his mother but was beaten by his father making him a very angry child Adolf had an interest in art but he was not admitted to art school He began drinking heavily but after an episode of drunkenness he never drank again As a teenager Adolf had no girlfriend At around 18 years of age he was orphaned and went to live in a homeless shelter In an attempt to avoid the draft in Austria he moved to Munich Germany and ended up in the German military Hitler during World War I became a patriot He was angered by the politicians and blamed them for the loss of land people and ships in the war In 1919 at the age of 30 Hitler joined the German Worker s Party The party grew to over a million members and they decided the problem with Germany was the Jewish people In 1921 Adolph became the führer commander of the Nazi party As the führer Hitler became very powerful Women were attracted by his power and highly educated Germans were among his followers He established the Schutzstaffel better known as the SS which was a highly elite fighting force

    pledge of allegiance New officers needed Jeanne announced that Jim Forcella is no longer able to function as HATT president and she asked that members step up to fill the vacancies for president and vice president and or offer some names for consideration for these positions Candidate s names can be given to any member of the board or any officer Hopefully we will be able to induct the new officers in June Membership dues She also reminded attendees that our HATT membership runs the calendar year Anyone who has not paid now should renew their membership now Anyone who has not paid by the end of June will be dropped from the membership list June meetings Jeanne announced that our June meeting is a two part event This two hour presentation given by Jim Forcella will be entitled The 20th Century s Most Despicable Dictator Adolf Hitler Prepare to be intrigued by the fiendish framework that molded the man behind his detestable despicable deeds and murders Part I of this presentation will be held at Clymer Library on Thursday June 11 5 30 p m Part 2 will be on Tuesday June 16 5 30 p m Mark your calendars now so that you can attend both presentations Artifact activity Following the announcements Jeanne introduced Scarlett Rehrig who guided us through sorting boxes of local artifacts Attendees divided into small groups and went through boxes of donated memorabilia sorting out items pertinent to Tobyhanna Township This is just the first session needed to get items ready for cataloging Following the sorting each group talked about the most interesting item they had found in their box Scarlett said we will need to work on these items for an hour before each HATT meeting Her goal is to get it all

    The meeting was called to order by Rick Bodenschatz He welcomed all the attendees and encouraged them to join HATT The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Frank McDevitt May meeting Rick announced that the next meeting on May 21st would be dedicated to looking at some of our archival treasures This fun work session will be led by Scarlett Rehrig Attendees will be divided into groups and each group will file and organize some of the items Each team will tell the others about the items they have found and then these archives will be put into the cabinets Library project Rick also told us about a library project being conducted by students from Marywood University The students will look into the library s current activities and then they will come up with some ideas as to how the library could be improved A reception with 20 30 students will be held for them to present their ideas Dues are due Members and guests were reminded that it is time to renew their HATT membership Forms were available at the sign in desk Speaker John Layton is a three time presenter a HATT member and a descendant of the Ace family He spoke about the Ace Store formerly located in Swiftwater The Ace family opened the store in 1851 and it remained a family business through more than eight generations The store sold everything and at times functioned more like a trading post John showed pictures of the many items sold and the equipment that was used at that time When the store closed in 1972 the family members each took some of the antique items from the store John is in the process of getting these items back in his possession with the idea of converting the old
