    opens approximately one month prior to the events and allows participants to select their preferred pick up event and species Registration is strongly encouraged but we generally accept walk ins at the end of each event while supplies last You can sign up for registration announcements here Yard Tree Information We offer a variety of species each season ranging from large shade trees to small fruit and flowering trees Upon pick up trees will be in 5 gallon buckets and will be from 2 10 tall Trees will fit in a car truck grocery cart or even on the bus See information on how to get your tree home safely here Species Selection When choosing a species please consider the available space in your yard for roots and branches as well as how much sun your yard gets each day Please also consider the difficulty of each species some grow well with little maintenance while others particularly fruit trees require expert pruning and care to thrive See the list of available trees here Planting Location For advice on where in your yard to plant your tree check out Right Tree Right Place from the Arbor Day Foundation If your yard is paved or concreted and you have nowhere to plant a tree please consider applying for the Philadelphia Water Department s Rain Check program This innovative cost sharing program enables Philadelphia property owners to make affordable stormwater management improvements to their properties including concrete removal and porous paver installation Planting Care We partner with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society PHS to offer tree planting and care demonstrations at each giveaway event We ll also send you home with a free bag of mulch from the Fairmount Park Organic Recycling Center and educational materials that will help you properly plant and care

    property owner If you are a renter or tenant please work with your landlord to submit a request Philadelphia Parks Recreation will inspect your property within 7 10 business days The Street Tree Inspector for your neighborhood will visit your property to check out your sidewalk and determine if there s enough room for a tree while leaving room for ADA accessibility a buffer around your utilities and other public safety considerations If your property is approved the inspector will select an appropriate species for your space based on sidewalk width overhead wires underground utilities shade from existing trees and other considerations The inspector will leave an owner permission form in your mailbox If your property is not approved the inspector will leave a note explaining why Sign and return the Owner Permission Form This is a crucial step We cannot put your property on a planting list until we receive your signed permission form If there isn t an existing tree pit in your sidewalk we ll cut one for you We ll also remove stumps if there is an existing pit You can help us streamline this process by making sure your tree pit or sidewalk is clear of debris fencing etc and reporting any existing stumps or standing dead trees during your request Planting After receiving your signed OPF we ll place your tree on a planting list for the next planting season available Planting will occur anywhere from 6 18 months after we received your signed permission form In Philadelphia the tree planting seasons generally run from April 15 June 15 and October November 15 but often changes based on conditions Timeline Your street tree will be planted anywhere from 6 18 months after your request We plant trees during the optimal planting season which is
