  • Villanueva del Duque
    is on line Tenemos 4 invitados conectado s Villanueva del Duque The site of the town has been populated since Roman times who settled here attracted by the wealth of its lead deposits which were worked between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD The population was never concentrated in one town Instead it was spread around a number of settlements especially that of the Terrera Mine on the hill of San Gregorio in the Sauzon area and in the area around the Hermitage of la Virgen de Guia The present town dates back to the 15th century and traces its origins to the hamlet of El Allozo known for its vineyards and its wine presses Most of the population died out after an outbreak of the plague However the few remaining villagers settled in El Retamal in the late 13th century From the very start the present town was linked to the County of Belalcázar established by Enrique IV as a grant to Don Alfonso de Sotomayor as a reward for the services rendered by his father to King Juan II in the Battle of Olmedo and made up also of Gahete Belalcazar and Finojosa Hinojosa del Duque of which Villanueva del Duque was an outlying district In 1631 it was finally named as a Town at the handsome price of four thousand ducats paid by the Count of Belalcazar and Duke of Bejar himself who gave his name to the addressee of Miguel Cervantes famous work El Quijote In the first part of the 20th century Villanueva del Duque enjoyed a thriving economy based on the exploitation of several mining deposits which now lie abandoned in the countryside around the village for instance the mines of El Soldado and Las Morras PLACES TO VISIT Parish Church
