  • Los Pedroches
    of the region lying between 500 and 700 meters above sea level resulting in a continental Mediterranean climate and the uniform topography of its villages and landscapes Pedroches has its own physical character in Andalusia and is bordered by a series of mountain ranges and rivers that enclose the area This makes Pedroches one of the most clearly defined natural regions of Andalusia which coupled with its historical past gives it a unique identity The local road network and state highways allow quick access to Pedroches This infrastructure places the region within 45 minutes of Cordoba 2 hours and 30 minutes of Malaga and 3 hours of Madrid NATURE In the Pedroches the traveller will find a well conserved and extensive natural environment with a variety of ecosystems Here man and nature exist side by side and there are hills and rivers in which the hiker can be alone with the nature This region boasts an area of dehesa a terrain made up of mediterranean forest and pasture considered among the most extensive and well preserved in Europe with exceptional locations for the practice of outdoor activities such as trekking cycling paragliding and nature watching Along with the holm oak the most common trees are olive gall oaks and cork oaks where cranes and other birds hide in their branches a great visual delight Of special interest are the rivers Guadalmez Gato Zújar and Yeguas where you can find such rare species as the otter Other species of hunting interest are boar and red deer the latter distinguished by the curious and haunting sound of its bellow during the rutting season The main natural attraction is Cardeña s nature reserve and its visitor centre where you will discover the ecological wealth of this area one of the few remaining refuges of the endangered Iberian lynx HISTORY Strolling through Pedroches allows the visitor to experience its thousand year old history The Archaeological remains of diverse prehistoric ages found all over prove that the area was populated from the most ancient times During the Roman period this land enjoyed great importance due to its mining resources for which it became known as the Valley of the metals In the Moslem age it was named Fash al Ballut which means land of the acorns Although utilised mainly for cattle grazing it also gained significance in terms of its military religious and judicial functions In the early middle ages the region comprised three administrative and judicial areas Belalcázar s county the dominion of Santa Eufemia and Seven Villas of the Pedroches This remained the case until the 19th century when due to juridical and administrative reform the region was split into the 17 municipalities that exist today This division did not however prevent the development of strong ties between the inhabitants of the area and today several localities share pilgrimages such as the Virgin of Guidance the Virgin of the Moon or the Virgin of the Crosses ANCIENT HAND CRAFTS The artistic and cultural
