    of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación 2 Hermitage of Santa Eufemia 3 Ermita of La Virgen de las Cruces 4 Old Town Gate 5 Circular Watchtowers 6 Miramontes Castle 7 Vioque Castle DOS TORRES Dos Torres is a village steeped in history whose origins go back as far as the Late Middle Ages 14th 15th centuries However these lands were inhabited in ancient times in the Paleaolithic period and in Roman times Present day Dos Torres was formed after a government edict on c 11th December 1839 declared the amalgamation into one town of the two adjacent villages Torremilano and Torrefranca which had always been very closely linked historically although not so close in terms of political administration Torrefranca was one of the villages which made up the old County of Santa Eufemia whereas Torremilano belonged to the Seven Towns of Los Pedroches Throughout the historic centre of Dos Torres the use of granite and high quality wrought iron window bars has been preserved over the centuries and there are also fine examples of religious architecture Outstandingly attractive and original architectural features can be seen everywhere in bridges hermitages churches or most of all in the houses with their sculpted doorways remarkable lintels and noble coats of arms which reflect the importance of the village in the past The layout of the village houses has changed little over the years and it has been named a Place of Cultural Interest in the section of Historic Town Centres PLACES TO VISIT 1 Church of Santiago Cultural Centre 2 Roman Bridge of San Juan 3 Madueñas Bridge 4 Entrance Gate of San Juan de la Penitencia Convent 5 Roman Road of Santa Rígida 6 Hermitage of San Sebastián 7 Well of the Snows Early Christian Basilica EL GUIJO The origins of El Guijo go back to between the late C 12th and early C 13th when the inhabitants of El Villar de Santa María situated in the Cerro de Majadalaiglesia abandoned their settlement possible due to an Islamic invasion The first mention of El Guijo was made in the Middle Ages by King Alfonso VIII in 1189 After being mentioned as a place in the late C 13th the population was included in the Estate of Santa Eufemia and during the C 14th and C 15th its history was closely linked to this estate For the next two centuries El Guijo became an important cattle rearing centre since two busy cattle tracks la Cañada de la Mesta and la Real Soriana passed close to the village and the collection of grazing rights in the Bishopric of Cordoba took place there As we walk the streets of El Guijo it feels like an oasis of peace and quiet graced by the simple charm of its people PLACES TO VISIT 1 Parish Church of Santa Ana 2 Hermitage of La Virgen de las Cruces Situated next to the most important archaeological site in the region 3 El Soto Recreational Area 4 Old Public Washhouses
