  • Campaign for Working Families Announces Record-Breaking Results of Free Income Tax Filings | Urban Affairs Coalition
    started in 2003 The tax sites were staffed with 460 IRS certified volunteers providing more than 13 819 hours of free tax services to hard working families across Philadelphia According to the IRS the CWF prepared the most returns and provided the most refund dollars of all of the VITA Campaigns in Pennsylvania A program partner of the Urban Affairs Coalition The Campaign for Working Families provides free tax filing assistance so Philadelphia families can maximize federal and state tax credits without paying sky high fees to commercial tax preparers This tax season the CWF operated 12 community based tax sites Philadelphia families earning less than 51 000 and singles with incomes under 20 000 in 2012 were eligible for the CWF s services Thanks to our volunteers and supporters we put more dollars then ever into the pockets of low income families in Philadelphia said Mary Arthur director CWF We were also able to help hundreds of our clients save money by providing direct deposit prepaid debit cards savings bonds FAFSA public benefit screening and financial products that help build assets In addition to free tax preparing and e filing the CWF did 309 Savings Bonds totaling 50 500 454 Prepaid Debit Cards 73 FAFSAs 796 Credit Reports Over the past 11 years the CWF has prepared and e filed 129 747 tax returns and brought 211 3 million in federal and state refunds to working families throughout Philadelphia and surrounding communities By providing this service the CWF has saved these families an additional 24 million in charges for tax preparation check cashing fees and interest on loans For more information visit the website cwfphilly org CONTACT Robin Robinowitz Urban Affairs Coalition 267 973 1064 rrobinowitz uac org Tags News Publications Subscribe to our Newsletter About Us History UAC

  • Philadelphia Home Buy Now program seeks Anchor Institution | Urban Affairs Coalition
    Buy Now is administered by a partnership with the Urban Affairs Coalition which assists with the program s design and ongoing management Bringing back Philadelphia Home Buy Now is a major boost to Philadelphia for employees for employers and for neighborhoods We are proud to partner with the city to administer the program said Sharmain Matlock Turner president and CEO Urban Affairs Coalition The program features 4 000 matching grants for homebuyers working for anchor institutions and 2 000 matching grants for other homebuyers Anchor institutions are major employers with 250 or more employees in targeted areas that are no larger than one square mile surrounding the institution The program also offers onsite homebuyer workshops discounted housing services and linkages to other housing programs Twenty two participating employers currently participate including anchor institutions Drexel University University of Pennsylvania and Temple University with organizations such as NewCourtland Life and Cancer Treatment Centers of America Philadelphia Home Buy Now provides wide ranging benefits For participating employers the program offers a powerful tool for building strong successful companies Studies of similar programs have found that staff who receive housing benefits like Philadelphia Home Buy Now stay at their jobs 50 percent longer saving their companies money in separation recruitment and training costs Staff who receive a housing benefit also score higher on performance reviews than their peers For Philadelphia s neighborhoods the program contributes to stability and a sense of community by bringing in new homeowners Philadelphia Home Buy Now is funded out of bond proceeds with a public commitment of only 735 000 and does not impact the general fund Philadelphia Home Buy Now is now seeking another anchor institution to join the program and has issued a Letter of Intent to Apply with a deadline of February 22 Details can be
