  • Thanksgiving Basket Program | Urban Affairs Coalition
    those most in need and provide them with Thanksgiving Baskets Over the last 11 years our partners Brown s Shoprite and their vendors have provided all of the Thanksgiving fixings valued at 25 000 annually However UAC must raise 30 000 to purchase the Turkeys for the baskets In the past the costs of the matching funds have largely been supported by funding from the Department of Community Economic Development DCED however these funds are no longer available To learn about sponsorships or other ways to give please contact Felicia Harris at fharris uac org WHY THE NEED POVERTY IN PHILADELPHIA UAC s efforts to feed those in poverty during this time of year are critical as Philadelphia s poverty rate continues to climb Over 400 000 of Philadelphians live in poverty giving Philadelphia the second highest poverty rate 28 among the nation s largest cities Additionally more than 470 000 Philadelphia residents are eligible for food stamps but not all receive them That s 3 out of every 10 city residents HOW TO VOLUNTEER Please contact Kate Rivera at k rivera uac org or click here to sign up to volunteer today Each year volunteers stuff Thanksgiving Baskets at Brown s Family Shoprite 24 th Oregon Basket Stuffing this year will take place on Saturday November 21 2015 at 9AM 12PM Volunteers can also help by distributing the baskets at Brown s Family Shoprite Parkside 1575 N 52nd Street on Monday November 23 2015 Volunteers must be at least 13 years old 2015 Thanksgiving Basket Program Cabinet Rev William B Moore Pastor Tenth Memorial Baptist Church Rev Marshall Paul Mitchell Salem Baptist Church of Jenkintown Rev Dr Lorina Marshall Blake Vice President Government Relations Independence Blue Cross Paul Brauer Executive Vice President and COO Shop Rite Brown s Super

  • UAC KEYSPOT Instructor Luis Oquendo | Urban Affairs Coalition
    to Philadelphians Nearly 100 people gathered April 5 to celebrate the opening of the Urban Affairs Coalition KEYSPOT at 1207 Chestnut St The ribbon cutting ceremony featured a live broadcast by Steve Sanders and Sharmain Matlock Turner of WURD 900 AM There was some talk that people who don t know computers are often too intimidated to try to learn A lot of people are afraid if they push the wrong button they re going to blow something up Sanders said However Oquendo assured the audience he has addressed even the most basic computing questions even as elementary as turning on a computer When asked what he hoped to achieve through KEYSPOT Oquendo said I want to reach out to everyone I don t want anyone to be left out When asked if that meant standing outside of the KEYSPOT with a sign he enthusiastically replied I will if I have to Immediately after the broadcast ended a third of all of the computers were already in use by eager learners Oquendo was right by their sides warmly introducing them to the digital world Subscribe to our Newsletter About Us History UAC Impacts President s Corner President s Bio Interviews

  • David Buckholtz: A Rising Star, Rising Above | Urban Affairs Coalition
    strong caring and involved mother Myracherisse Best and the help of UAC s Youth Division Recently he was recognized along with the Coalition by Sun Life Financial with the Sun Life Rising Star Award The award program honors high school students who have overcome the odds and remained committed to furthering their education as well as the nonprofit organization that advocates on their behalf The Coalition received a 50 000 program grant award and David was awarded a 5 000 scholarship David is now a freshman at Penn State studying aerospace engineering The Coalition used the funds to launch The Driver s Seat a project of UAC s Youth Division that served 25 economically disadvantaged students The program provided paid summer internships entrepreneurship education and training and other workforce development resources to youth interested in starting their own businesses The Coalition held its 1st Annual Driver s Seat Youth Entrepreneurship Expo in August of 2011 in which students exhibited their business plans and products and competed for business development scholarships to further their entrepreneurial goals A Note from David Buckholtz August 18 2011 Dear UAC Family Yesterday I left for my freshman year at Penn State University majoring in either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering Your contributions to my education career and staggering dream has helped me in ways you couldn t imagine Years ago I couldn t visualize myself at this point your dedication determination work ethics and professional endowments will forever live within me Since my freshman year of high school the Urban Affairs Coalition has been a second home for me helping me form a resume preparing me for job interviews etc The Coalition not only taught me how to hold a professional stature but it helped me to see the true value of giving back to my
