  • UAC Announces Jojy Varghese as Director of CED | Urban Affairs Coalition
    strategies for Federal government clients that have been instrumental in reforming healthcare and IT governance After earning his Masters from the Fels Institute of Government Jojy was selected to be Chief of Staff for PA State Rep Tony Payton Jr bringing a widely diverse range of experiences and strategies to the 179th Legislative District serving the lower Northeast and parts of North Philadelphia Jojy has worked in numerous departments within the City of Philadelphia starting in the late 90s as an intern for then Mayor Rendell He currently serves on the Board of the American Lung Association along with The Lighthouse in Kensington as well as various steering committees and civic associations throughout the city In 2012 he completed the Political Leaders Fellowship with the Center for Progressive Leadership Prior to accepting the role with the Urban Affairs Coalition Jojy worked for the Mayor of Reading PA as the City s first ever Director of Housing and Real Estate In his free time Jojy is an avid reader and cyclist In his freer time he consumes quality Netflix offerings in binge worthy fashion He is very excited to be back home in Philly and grateful for the opportunity to work

    Philadelphia homeowners with less than perfect credit The PHIL Plus and Mini PHIL Loans can be used for home repairs and paying off debts including past due utility bills CED partners with two banks and 27 nonprofit housing counseling agencies to provide the loans To go through the program applicants undergo a free one time counseling session and then are referred to the bank of their choice The Mini PHIL is worth up to 15 000 with Citizens Bank and 10 000 with PNC Bank and is best for basic home repairs The PHIL Plus may be worth up to 25 000 for homeowners who have larger projects such as remodeling You can use up to half of either loan to pay off existing debt Neighborhood housing counselors provide free assistance to help you apply for the loan Click here to learn about Eligibility Requirements Approved Lenders and More Home Improvement Workshops UAC works with community organizations to provide home improvement workshops where topics such as avoiding scams weatherization and choosing a contractor are covered Resources Looking for more information on home repairs before you begin your project Click here Frequently Asked Questions Click here for a complete list of

    5 000 netbooks to public housing residents connecting 6 000 households to internet service in their home and getting the word out through over 5M media impressions 3 We operated a KEYSPOT computer lab funded by The City of Philadelphia at UAC s downtown office and provided services to over 3 000 people this year 4 Our Community and Economic Development CED division made 58 matching grants totaling 186 425 on behalf of the City of Philadelphia to homebuyers under the Philadelphia Home Buy Now employer assisted housing program This leveraged 15 861 531 in home purchases CED organized 88 workshops in financial education for 610 participants 5 We placed and supported over 1 000 low income yotuh ages 14 21 in summer employment and 94 retained jobs year round Through our 21st Century Workstream Program we graduated 23 seniors from high school and transitioned 21 stuents into post secondary education and or employment Additionally we placed 50 high schoool students in year round internships 6 We lead the READ by 4th Campaign with Public Citizens for Children and Youth PCCY uniting over 50 public and private companies nonprofits and public agencies in an effort to increase the amount of students reading at grade level by 4th grade The campaign s mission is to double the number of children entering fourth grade reading on grade level by 2020 7 We worked with Brown s Shoprite and more than 80 community organizations to provide 1 000 Thanksgiving baskets to 6 000 needy families 8 Leveraging the Coalition s economy of scale we invested in an online accounting and performance based metrics system increasing the efficiency of both our Partner Program and our Fiscal Operations This shift in expenses resulted in increased programming capabilities that translated into nearly 20 000 additional families
