  • Kiliani Named Project Director for Freedom Rings Partnership | Urban Affairs Coalition

  • City, Partners Announce Earned Income Tax Credit & Savings Day in Philadelphia and Opening of 11 Free Tax Preparation Sites | Urban Affairs Coalition
    aside in savings bonds or get a low fee prepaid debit card We also do financial student aid applications All of ourservices are designed to help working people improve their finances Free tax preparation services are available to families who earned less than 49 000 in 2010 or if you are single with an income under 20 000 Taxes are prepared by IRS certified volunteers who are trained to help you get all of your tax credits as quickly as possible EITC is a tax benefit for families and individuals who earned in 2010 less than 48 362 have children or less than 13 460 no children EITC refunds can be up to 5 666 per year based on family size and income Joining Khadijah Jones at the event were Joanna Smith Ramani director of strategy Doorways to Dreams D2D Fund James Daugherty SPEC Territory Manager IRS LaSha Bonner Fincher tax filer and Saving Bonds purchaser City Councilwoman Marian Tasco Otis Bullock Jr executive director Mayor s Office of Community Service and Sharmain Matlock Turner president Urban Affairs Coalition Immediately after the event Bonner Fincher a single mom with a three year old daughter went to the Center City Super Site Mayor s Office of Community Service 1113 Chestnut Street to purchase two 250 00 Saving Bonds for her daughter and for herself After filing my taxes for free last year and the Campaign working hard to get me the largest refund amount possible I am excited to purchase a Savings Bond this year said Bonner Fincher As a young mother raising a daughter I know the importance of saving up for a rainy day and the power of investing I ll be graduating from Temple University with a bachelors in Communications in a few weeks As a graduation gift my aunt will present me with two savings bonds that my deceased mother bought for me when I was a young child Added Bonner Fincher It means a lot to me knowing my mother wanted to invest in my future And though she s not here now and hasn t been for most of my life she still found a way to look out for me Now I am keeping the tradition by buying a Saving Bond for my daughter In January 2011 the IRS announced that you can buy U S Series I Savings Bonds with a portion or all of your tax refund for yourself or anyone Smith Ramini has been encouraging tax filers to invest part of their refunds in bonds For as little as 50 tax payers now have a simple secure way to put money aside and watch it grow over time The opportunity gives easy assess to a saving opportunity for themselves and as gifts for their children grandchildren or other loved ones ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN FOR WORKING FAMILIES The Campaign for Working Families a program partner of the Urban Affairs Coalition boosts the number of people who receive FREE tax filing assistance and

  • UAC Launches Freedom Rings Partnership | Urban Affairs Coalition
    Urban Affairs Coalition and the City to expand access to computer training and technology across Philadelphia said Drexel University President John A Fry We are proud to begin our efforts in honor of Dr King on the 25th anniversary of this special holiday Freedom grows as more people are able to learn and communicate using today s newest technologies The Freedom Rings Partnership will reach over 100 000 Philadelphians with information about the importance of broadband to their daily lives provide hands on training to 15 000 people at over 130 locations citywide including 77 public computer centers and distribute 5 000 netbooks to public housing residents who complete technology skills training Public Computer Centers PCC will be located across Philadelphia primarily in north south and west Philadelphia Locations will include a variety of recreation centers health and social service organizations workforce development agencies and nonprofits In addition 4 mobile computer labs will travel throughout the city to provide training and Internet access to underserved communities Freedom Rings Partnership MLK Day Event Activities Computer Refurbishment More than one hundred volunteers from Non Profit Technology Resources and Digital Service Fellows DSF AmeriCorps Program refurbished used computers which will be donated to organizations in need throughout the city for Internet access and computer training Race to Connect A fun filled team event that ties together the legacy of Dr King with the importance of getting connected via the Internet The race was a scavenger hunt where 5 teams completed a mini service activity that brought them to 14 stops in the Girard College area Teams were asked to conduct a volunteer activity or answer a trivia question related to Dr King or the civil rights movement They Tweeted their progress in the race at each stop Volunteers were from the YouthBuild Charter

  • MLK Service Day to Focus on Bridging the Digital Divide | Urban Affairs Coalition

    helping improve educational opportunities for the nation s at risk youth Sun Life Financial is committed to the communities where it does business and we are honored to recognize these outstanding organizations and students who care so deeply about their communities as Sun Life Rising Stars said Sun Life Financial U S President Wes Thompson Representatives of Sun Life Rising Star Awards program surprised each student with their scholarship award at two separate Philadelphia area events Following is a list of the Philadelphia area Sun Life Rising Star Awards program non profit organization grant and student scholarship recipients Philadelphia Futures For twenty years Philadelphia Futures award winning college access and retention program Sponsor A Scholar has helped make the dream of college a reality for low income Philadelphia students The program has served more than one thousand disadvantaged students attending Philadelphia s most under performing neighborhood high schools Philadelphia Futures Student Award Recipient Bintu Sherif Motivation High School Bintu has been an active member of the Philadelphia Futures Sponsor A Scholar Program since her freshman year of high school Pursuing every opportunity for academic growth Bintu is deeply involved in school activities including her role as Senior Class President and her participation in National Honor Society Model United Nations Dove the Drum Club and the Line Dancing Club In addition to her school involvement Bintu also serves the broader Philadelphia community having participated in the Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service Urban Affairs Coalition The Coalition s Driver s Seat Project will serve 20 economically disadvantaged youth from low income households in Philadelphia The program will provide resources to students interested in starting their own businesses by providing them with opportunities to build work skills while at the same time helping students to understand career development and the planning process Urban Affairs Coalition Student Recipient David Buckholtz Science Leadership Academy David has extremely active in the Urban Affairs Coalition programming and has been a youth intern in their Summer Career Exploration Internships Program for the past three years For seven years David has been a part of the Partnership for Achieving Careers in Technology and Science program at the Franklin Institute where he was recently hired as a WorkReady Summer Youth Employee An avid volunteer David works with the Philadelphia School District to mentor younger youth and is the Robotics Education Specialist Coordinator for the LEGO League Robotics Club Leadership Education and Development LEAD LEAD s mission is to enable youth of diverse backgrounds to convert high potential into high achievement and responsible leadership The program accomplishes its mission by selecting student LEADers who earn the opportunity to attend an intensive summer residency educational program at a top tier university The program is designed to challenge students and inspire them to choose careers in business or engineering LEAD Student Award Recipient Fernando Morales Cypress Ridge High School Fernando was part of the 2010 LEAD Summer Business Institute at Duke University Fuqua School of Business where he participated alongside peers
