  • Sun Life Financial Recognizes Philadelphia Nonprofits and Three College-bound High School Seniors as Sun Life Rising Stars | Urban Affairs Coalition
    groups of youth in a manner yielding measurable results Student nominee s plan to pursue post secondary education leadership qualities commitment to his or her community and a 750 word essay on how financial education contributes to future success The 2011 Philadelphia Sun Life Rising Star Awards program winners include Philadelphia Youth Network Inc The Philadelphia Youth Network makes connections between individuals organizations and systems to provide the preparation needed for city s youth to thrive in a regional and global economy through two citywide strategies WorkReady Philadelphia and Project U Turn Student Recipient Ramean Clowney Fairhill Community HS Ramean distinguished himself as a passionate vocal leader admired by his peers while interning for the Student Success Center Leadership Academy a team of youth leaders from neighborhood high schools who bring college and career support to their respective communities Within months of completing his internship Ramean joined the PYN Youth Ambassadors program serving as the first formerly disengaged youth among a cohort of otherwise in school youth As a Youth Ambassador Ramean has worked tirelessly on his public speaking skills becoming one of the more charismatic spokespeople in the program The program provides what he describes as a positive social outlet while allowing him to speak up for the youth of Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition The Urban Affairs Coalition unites government business neighborhoods and individual initiatives to improve the quality of life in the region build wealth in urban communities and solve emerging issues Student Recipient Tiffany Collins Arise Academy Charter HS Tiffany has been an active member at her high school and has proven her determination to excel academically as well as plan for a successful professional future in medicine She consistently earned high grades during her junior year and received a much deserved designation as an honor roll student She is a revered leader by both her peers and the faculty she is also a respected mentor and exceptionally caring friend to her peers She maintains an excellent attendance record and continues to push herself beyond what is expected of her academically Tiffany is interested in becoming a nurse She says it s a spiritual calling and she is determined to prove to the world that nurses are just as smart as doctors Philadelphia Futures Philadelphia Futures prepares students from low income families to enter and succeed in college by providing mentoring academic enrichment college guidance and financial incentives Student Recipient Jamal Robinson Abraham Lincoln HS Jamal is enrolled in honors classes and maintains a 3 7 GPA and participates in weekly classes through the Sponsor a Scholar program SAS at Philadelphia Futures Through his participation in Philadelphia Futures Jamal has found an outlet to engage a cohort of like minded college bound peers to reach out to students at Abraham Lincoln and to explore ways he can contribute to the broader community at large He participated in the Sponsor a Scholar Sea Perch Robotics Club and the Haverford College Admissions Marathon where Jamal was an asset to

  • Coalition Releases Foreclosure Prevention Resource Guide | Urban Affairs Coalition
    Guide Summer Fall 2011 edition is only available online at www uac org foreclosurehelp htm The Coalition is very concerned that many homeowners were not receiving the help they needed for navigating this complex process or even fully understanding their options when facing potential foreclosure said Sharmain Matlock Turner President and CEO of the Coalition This guide provides a practical and comprehensive view of the foreclosure process community resources how to obtain a reputable housing counselor and how to avoid foreclosure rescue scams The Guide also notes some important changes that have taken place with programs designed to help residents at risk of foreclosure in Philadelphia s five county region This past year has been an extremely challenging time for the housing market due to the shutdown of the Pennsylvania Homeowners Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program HEMAP a loan program that helped homeowners at risk of foreclosure In addition another emergency loan program the federal Emergency Homeowners Loan Program EHLP has also ended With the loss of these programs a guide to help residents navigate the foreclosure process has never been more important Highlights of the guide include A flow chart of the new foreclosure process in light of the elimination of PA s Homeowners Emergency Mortgage Assistance HEMAP Samples of foreclosure notices Updated information on how to report mortgage foreclosure rescue scams Updated directory of housing counselors available to help at risk residents The Guide is produced by UAC s Community and Economic Development department with the assistance of the Urban Affairs Coalition s Foreclosure Prevention Task Force a collaboration of bankers public interest attorneys and housing advocates Production of the Guide was made possible by a grant from Citi Foundation Tags Community Economic Development News Publications Building Wealth Economic Development Subscribe to our Newsletter About Us History UAC Impacts

    home within the city limits The City will match this funding up to 4 000 per home buyer To date participating companies include Agusta Westland Cancer Treatment Centers of America Chick s Café and Wine Bar Diamond and Associates Drexel University Energy Coordinating Agency Gypsy Lane Technologies Horizon House Martin Banks NewCourtland Nochumson PC Re Vision Architecture Special People In Northeast Inc University of Pennsylvania and Urban Industry Initiative Philadelphia has a world class workforce said Mayor Nutter Home Buy Now is an excellent tool for employers to recruit top talent and for the city to create more stable flourishing neighborhoods Philadelphia Home Buy Now is administered by a partnership with the Urban Affairs Coalition which assists with the program s design and ongoing management For participating employers the program offers a powerful tool for building strong successful companies Studies of similar programs have found that staff who receive housing benefits like Philadelphia Home Buy Now stay at their jobs 50 percent longer saving their companies money in separation recruitment and training costs Staff who receive a housing benefit also score higher on performance reviews than their peers Philadelphia Home Buy Now is part of a larger strategy to stabilize neighborhoods in the face of the current economic crisis It builds on the City s nationally recognized Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program which has saved more than 3 500 homes as well as the Neighborhood Stabilization Program NSP a federal stimulus program that strengthens neighborhoods by providing housing opportunities in targeted communities that were highly affected by high rates of foreclosure Philadelphia Home Buy Now is funded out of bond proceeds and does not impact the City s general fund The Urban Affairs Coalition UAC unites government business community and individual initiatives to improve the quality of life in the region

    home inspections The first employer to sign on for the new Home Buy Now program is Drexel University which will be one of the anchor institutions We are very excited about our collaboration with the Philadelphia Home Buy Now program said Deborah Eskridge Glenn Vice President of Human Resources at Drexel University that administers a program at Drexel with a forgivable loan of 15 000 for eligible employees This initiative will provide eligible Drexel employees with an added incentive to purchase a home in West Philadelphia Drexel employee Dr Kalatu Davies will be the first individual to purchase a home under the new program using a combined grant of 19 000 to buy her home Owning my own home has always been a dream of mine The city s grant along with the Drexel loan allows me to get a great house that I would not have been able to purchase so soon This leaves my savings for future home improvement and maintenance It is definitely a blessing said Dr Davies I ve always wanted to be involved and give back to the local community that I live in I think that homeownership helps to motivate those goals Philadelphia Home Buy Now provides wide ranging benefits For Philadelphia s housing market the program provides a significant incentive for individuals to make home purchases during difficult economic times The program will help an estimated 240 homebuyers finance their purchases over the next two years the final number of homebuyers will depend on how many take the up to 4 000 match and how many take the up to 2 000 match It will also leverage more than an estimated 29 million in home sales into the housing market with a public commitment of only 735 000 For participating employers the program

  • Mayor Nutter Urges Businesses to Support Additional Jobs for Youth This Summer | Urban Affairs Coalition
    of funders including government and foundation grants as well as significant private sector investments As the largest subcontractor for PYN the UAC hosted the Mayor and supporters for today s announcement to encourage more businesses to make 1 000 donations to provide Philadelphia youth with meaningful work experiences this summer Also present were two teens from Philadelphia one with a job opportunity this summer and one who was denied the opportunity due to lack of funding Both made powerful cases for why the WorkReady program is vital to development of young people in the city David Buckholtz now 18 was placed in summer jobs by the UAC every summer since he was 14 years old His first job site was at the Franklin Institute Science Museum David s relationship with the UAC has grown exponentially over the years he was nominated for the Sun Life Financial Rising Star Scholarship and is now successfully working for Turner Construction The Urban Affairs Coalition has helped me move ahead in my life by giving me an opportunity I didn t even think was possible and then continuing to play a constant role by helping me to prepare for post secondary education and professional job placement said Mr Buckholtz Now I am headed to Pennsylvania State University and plan to major in Aerospace Engineering My career goal is to be an aerospace engineer and ultimately come back to Philadelphia and give back to my community Demetrius Lacey has not been as fortunate in securing a summer work opportunity A recent graduate of Boys Latin Charter School with a GPA of 3 44 Lacey will be attending Slippery Rock University in the fall to study forensics He applied for a summer job this year but learned that he is one of 509 applicants to the

    contribute to our community but helps families get one step closer to the middle class says Jones As a testament to the work the Campaign has performed Director Khadijah Jones was recently presented with an Impact in Income award by the United Way Khadijah Jones will be a guest on the radio show Financial Voices Thursday June 16 from 8 00 a m to 9 00 a m on WURD 90 AM or streamed live at http 900amwurd com As a member of the Urban Affairs Coalition the accomplishments of the Campaign have helped to further the Coalition s goal of building wealth in urban communities Since our inception building wealth for those who are most vulnerable has been one of our main priorities This includes our work with the Campaign as well as the Governor s Task Force for Working Families and The Brookings Institution in 2005 We see the work of the Campaign as an anti poverty program that helps those it serves to move up the economic ladder says Sharmain Matlock Turner President and CEO of the Urban Affairs Coalition This year in addition to tax returns the Campaign for Working Families also Engaged 673 active IRS certified volunteers who spent 17 795 hours staffing 11 free tax preparation sites CWF recruited 1 170 volunteers trained 716 volunteers and placed 797 volunteers Completed 12 210 taxes including 659 small business returns 4 601 of these completed returns were EITC returns Captured 22 3 million in state and federal tax refunds which includes 7 709 707 of EITC refunds Offered 580 new banking savings products pre paid debit cards and savings accounts Helped 684 customers purchase a U S Savings Bond for long term savings Completed 411 FAFSA forms and 303 public benefit applications Food Stamps CHIP Medical

  • Successful Foster Care Youth Recognized As Arise Academy's Second Graduating Class | Urban Affairs Coalition
    the workforce One student in particular Derrick Pough faced adversity throughout his life but has thrived at Arise Academy While at Arise Academy Pough served as a Student Ambassador He has obtained the honor of introducing the Lieutenant Governor at the graduation ceremony Pough is the twin brother of last year s Arise Academy valedictorian Dianne Pough His future plans include studying Criminal Justice at Holy Family University on a scholarship He hopes to become a police captain one day The Arise Academy opened its doors to students in September 2009 Founded by the Urban Affairs Coalition this unique school desires to reduce the number of Philadelphia foster care youth who drop out of high school an overwhelming 75 2 Arise Academy strives to provide its 200 students grades 9 12 with individualized attention in the classroom as well as a network of on site support services that address the specific needs of children in foster care Students can remain at Arise until their education is completed regardless of aging out of the foster care system Through the implementation of a wide range of extracurricular activities students can develop their talents outside of the classroom and experience a positive social environment with others who share their struggle Ultimately Arise Academy strives to offer foster care youth a promising chance at a bright future through encouraging its students to reach their full potential Urban Affairs Coalition The Urban Affairs Coalition is one of the Philadelphia region s leading nonprofits operating and managing a wide range of programs services and public policy initiatives that serve nearly 100 000 people each year The Coalition drives change from the ground up by building wealth in urban areas strengthening nonprofits and developing youth As one of the region s premier fiscal sponsors the Coalition provides
