From the Ground to the Cloud New Tools for Sustainable Development Google Earth Outreach The Internet is a democratizing force which offers new means of implementation for sustainable development Digital inclusion policies promote increasingly broad and timely access to socio environmental tools and information throughout the developing world The Web creates new possibilities for collaboration and transparency enabling unique partnerships Cloud computing can support unprecedented analysis and dissemination of large global datasets and visualization methods can support more rapid and informed decision making and public education For example Google Earth and Maps are used globally today by more than a billion people in more than 40 languages 4 00 6 00 mHealth Mobile Technologies to technologies to improve health outcomes is a swiftly evolving field with innovative technological advances occurring daily While it is a relatively new health strategy 83 of UN Member States report offering at least one type of mHealth service Because of its rapidly developing nature mHealth has frequently outpaced alignment with Ministry of Health priorities as well as the development of national strategies regarding standards and guidelines on technological interoperability monitoring and evaluation and privacy and security regulations needed to govern its use It is all too common for countries to have numerous active pilot projects with no input or oversight from the host country Without country guidance these projects have limited hope of becoming integrated into national public health programs and reaching scale While nascent conversations are taking place in some countries the majority of countries where mHealth has started to take root have no defined strategies or guidelines on implementation Knowing how to start these dialogues who to invite to the table and what actions to take is the first step towards building national level systems and mechanisms that can guide the development of a diverse mHealth ecosystem Day 6 Mon 18 June 10 00 1 00 Sustainable management of Natural Resources to support Post Conflict Peacebuilding Environmental Law Institute Keynote Speaker Ms Haddijatou Jallow Head of Sierra Leone s Environment Protection Agency 10 00 1 00 Read more Sustainable management of Natural Resources to support Post Conflict Peacebuilding Environmental Law Institute Natural resources play a central role in armed conflict and in facilitating the transition to peace in post conflict societies They frequently affect whether and how key security humanitarian and development objectives are met Building resilience and sustainably managing natural resources in post conflict settings is particularly important as post conflict countries are susceptible to conflict relapse and are more vulnerable to disasters In addition given the complex and volatile nature of post conflict societies individuals involved in natural resource management face a unique set of challenges and there is a need to tailor natural resource management strategies to fit the post conflict context In spite of this demonstrated need an established field of research and practice that addresses the role natural resources play in post conflict peacebuilding has only recently begun to emerge To address this gap the Environmental Law Institute the United Nations Environment Programme the University of Tokyo and McGill University have coordinated a global initiative over the past four years culminating in a series of seven related books which include over 150 case studies from more than 60 countries and territories written by over 225 authors This project represents the most significant collection to date of experiences analyses and lessons in managing natural resources to support post conflict peacebuilding The course will provide an overview of this emerging field drawing upon the unprecedented body of experiences and analyses that have been gathered 3 00 6 00 Assessing Sustainable Transport in the context of Green Economy Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport 3 00 6 00 Read more Assessing Sustainable Transport in the context of Green Economy Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport Transport is a key sector for sustainable development The transport sector is rapidly changing especially in emerging and developing economies Since the WSSD in 2002 progress has been made in raising the issue of sustainability in the transport sector including the development and pilot testing of the Avoid Shift Improve ASI approach which now offers a more sustainable alternative to the current growth pattern of unrestrained private motorization The transport sector is of particular relevance to the green economy theme of Rio 20 because of its potential for wide ranging environmental economic and social development benefits Application of green economy in the transport sector generally involves technological change including efficiency enhancements demand management and changes in consumer behaviour In the case of the transport sector changes in consumer behaviour can mean abandoning the use of private cars in favour of public transport or non motorized transport Demand management can involve a wide range of options including mobility based urban planning intelligent transport systems car sharing and limiting access to private cars through auction or lottery based vehicle quotas The Zero Draft Outcome Document for the Rio 20 workshop speaks about the importance of measuring progress in the implementation of the Green Economy A roadmap is proposed that contains indicative goals and timeline for 2012 2015 2015 2030 and 2030 This Learning Event will build on the efforts of the Rio 20
