  • The Need : Undriving & Undriver Licensing
the fossil fuel greenhouse gas emissions in the world The Lancet Oil dependence climate change and obesity are all consequences of driving and they are increasing by the day American car use has been on the rise since 1956 when highways arrived on the scene Government funding and construction has increased with increases in traffic but it has also encouraged more car reliance as suburbs became attractive living options Half of all of the trips made each day are within a three mile radius of our homes equaling a 20 minute bike ride and a quarter of the trips would be a 20 minute walk yet we primarily drive these short distances The U S has the highest rates of car ownership in the world and Americans now own more cars per household than there are drivers What Active Transportation for America 2008 Policymakers are addressing the issue by mandating changes to automobile design gasoline production and delivery and regulation of car use in high density cities But these responses are expensive and require a long implementation period and leave us feeling helpless Research is now pointing to behavior change as a faster route to reducing carbon emissions And yet while research shows that changing car use behavior could have the biggest impact it also is the hardest household behavior to change Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences PNAS Enter Undriving This beautifully simple program with its innovative Undriver License and accompanying pledge to reduce car use has engaged over 15 000 people to rethink how they travel and to cut their car dependency It is effective Seventy two percent of Undrivers report they established a new habit or pattern as a result of the program Undriving not only reduces car use but provides resources to help Undrivers use

  • History : Undriving & Undriver Licensing
Licensing Station made its debut at the 4th Annual Sustainable Ballard Festival in September 2007 where it was an instant hit In a rainy fall weekend we licensed 436 Undrivers of all ages who each made a pledge to reduce their car use or car use on the planet in general if not their own in the coming month They also received free bus tickets from King County METRO We quickly realized that we had a winning program on our hands with far reaching applications We formed an organization and got busy fielding invitations to bring the Station to events developing the program for use in schools workplaces and community settings and proving this innovative concept for generating behavior change Not only does Undriving readily engage people to reconsider their car use it effectively leads to change our surveys consistently show that 72 percent of Undrivers establish a new transportation pattern as a result of their pledge Since our launch we have licensed over 15 000 Undrivers at more than 100 events around the region We have partnered with King County Metro Seattle Children s City of Redmond Bumbershoot 4Culture Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center Feet First City of Issaquah City of Portland OR the Seattle Department of Transportation and many others We have presented at the World Carfree Conference the Safe Routes to School Summit and Seattle Green Festival Washington State Ride share Organization and Association for Commuter Transportation in Canada From the beginning we have fielded inquiries from all over the country and beyond from agencies universities hospitals and organizations who are interested in utilizing Undriver Licensing to help meet car use reduction goals in their locales In response we have now developed our Undriver Licensing Station Toolkit which we make available to Official Undriving Licensing Partners For

  • Our Approach : Undriving & Undriver Licensing
engaging The process of getting an Undriver License invites self expression and play and allows people to be seen People choose from a set of hats and Undriving props for their photos and select their own Undorsements for their license walk bike bus carpool telecommute skip the trip etc Undriving is for everyone The Undriver License is a great equalizer we are all Undrivers whether we commute 100 miles a day or don t own a car and there is always more we can each do Kids love getting licensed and seeing that they can influence family car use And people who already Undrive a lot get empowered to help others join them Undriving is self directed People devise their own pledges We simply ask questions offer suggestions or share stories of other Undrivers experiences The pledge is a commitment to take on an experiment and see what happens Is the bus too inconvenient While it might indeed take longer many have discovered they arrive at work more relaxed save money on parking and get to know neighbors at the bus stop Undriving is contagious The license itself serves as a tangible reminder of the Undriver s commitment and can also be used to spark conversation with others about reducing car use in a non judgmental way One Undriver reported I felt like we were given permission to raise the issue with others We like to think that each license is like a stone in the pond with untold potential ripples We re all in this together Undriving is liberating Undrivers reduce their CO2 emissions but equally importantly they discover the many joys of Undriving some of them surprising saving money better health more exercise less stress more connection with community even more time Undriving is an ongoing practice Getting
