to all the kids schools and downtown so most anything is within biking distance The kids are decked out with rain pants and backpack rain covers so they can ride to from school in any weather They have adapted to the needs of bike riding and take pride in the perseverence a Life Skill taught in Olympia schools required to ride in a downpour This attitude transfers to so many other life experiences Why do we ride bikes It s better for us and for the Earth We do it because it is the right choice for the right reason It is hard to make that choice when you are feeling tired or low but you feel so much better when you do Our family decided to ride bikes as our primary mode of transportation when the boys were in 1st and 2nd grade and the youngest was under 1 They are now 6th and 7th graders who are very active enjoy the outdoors and recognize the value of making the right decisions for the right reasons no matter how hard it seems at the time Riding their bikes to and from school and anywhere else has been a daily reminder of all of those values Enter Undriver Licensing For a few years we had been riding bikes pretty much as our only mode of transportation unless we were leaving town Then we moved across town and fell off the wagon we got out of the habit The boys continued to ride their bikes to school but anything else was a chore to get them to ride and we didn t push too hard After taking the pledge last year the family renewed their motivation to ride more The Undriver Llicenses definitely helped us all get back on track and

into work However I noted on that day how much more actual stress and headaches costs there are in driving versus the nominal conveniences I think the month of no driving and pledge helped me to commit and change my single driver behaviors habit and organize my routes bus schedules as well as my workday Mitch Birchfield Pledge Walk to work Since I began walking to work my husband has started taking the bus to work and we have gone from a two car family to a one car family with our one car parked in the driveway for most of the week Amy Skjonsberg Pledge Increase bike riding to work by one day a week I rode my bike one more day per week and so far for the month I am 100 at my goal I have my License on the outside of my backpack where it is very visible and people notice it and we start a conversation about it Catherine Cornell Pledge Not drive to work reduce pickup trips by replacing with bus I got a bike from the hospital s bike program and I haven t looked back since I ve been biking for the past 5 weeks rain or shine and really loving It s about 6 miles each way but much easier and faster than I had feared before finally trying out I definitely consider myself a fully converted bike commuter Scott Olson Pledge To get more people involved in Vanpool I continually let people know that we have an opening in my Vanpool or as I call it Manpool I also take the bus at night and have made more and more friends even with some of the new drivers Debby Anger see Debby s full story here Pledge Bike more sometimes

40 to 60 minutes depending on the traffic long enough for her to work her magic When you re on the bus with the same people every day you end up talking with them she says I ended up making friends with all the drivers on the route as well as most of the AM and PM passengers The bus is the greatest way to meet people says Debby We started a bowling group from that bus that bowls and has dinner every couple months And some of the ladies get together on Saturdays to walk followed by lunch and lots of fun chatter Debby loved to sit in the front with Kim and Elin greeting each person who came on board saying Thank you for riding with us Their favorite driver on the 234 was Vickie Leslie Sometimes a bus friend and I would meet after work for a drink while other 234 s went by just so we could get on Vickie s bus A few times their bus broke down and the Vickie fans stayed with her on the bus until a replacement bus arrived One night the bus was especially crowded and all the regulars were on We were in real rare form says Debby Everything that came out of us was hysterical Not only Vickie but all of us were laughing so hard that our stomachs hurt and tears were pouring out of our eyes Forget trying to listen to anything on your headset or read a book it just wasn t going to happen You either joined in or were a cranky rider not many of those When Vickie got transferred to another route a few years back Debby and her fellow riders planned a surprise party for her on her last day They

over somewhere above 280 lbs Late in 2004 the scale twisted around so far in agony that it read my weight as 10 lbs It was time for a change I looked at my lifestyle and realized that I had an unhealthy dependency on my car so I donated it to charity and forced myself to bicycle from Ballard to Redmond every day It wasn t quite that dramatic I bought a used mountain bike that looked comfy and sturdy and first rode it half a mile A few days later after I wasn t sore anymore I tried it again and went a mile After a few weeks I was riding from Ballard to the Montlake bus stop where I could catch a bus to the Microsoft campus I had also figured out that I could take the bus the entire way if I needed It was still rather dramatic I made the decision in November figuring that if I could survive without a car through the winter I really didn t need a car at all After four months I had lost at least 40 pounds Six years later I still don t own a car What I wish I had known when I started 1 You can pay a small fee to freeze your insurance so that you aren t considered a high risk driver after 3 months of car free living 2 If you re in Seattle register with SDOT s One Less Car before you go car free and Seattle will give you transit vouchers and a discounted Zipcar membership 3 Weather Underground s animated radar maps are great for helping you time your commute between bands of rain 4 Cascade Bicycle Club has Riding With Confidence and Urban Traffic Skills classes for newer riders
