    Back at the church teams put together care packages for families at Main Street Ministries in Hills boro as well as for overseas missionaries the church supports Another team provided child care for young children while older children and parents were pursuing other projects An effort was made to provide an outlet of service for people of all ages Allen said the congregation had voted several months ago to devote two Sundays per year to pursuing community projects in lieu of a Sunday morning worship service He said the idea was broadly embraced though some had reservations when it came down to actually planning the event The idea of doing this was connected in the mind of some people with the Bible s instruction not to work on the sabbath Allen says But this wasn t that It was more of what Jesus did when he did miracles on the sabbath he was meeting the needs of the people caring for people Allen says considering the newness of the idea doing it on a holiday weekend and then the impact of the weather he was pleased with the response Given all of that the participation level was very high he says I don t know that no matter what day or temperature we would have done it that we would have necessarily seen a higher participation level Don Ratzlaff is the editor of the Hillsboro Kan Free Press This article is reprinted with permission Photos from the Hillsboro Free Press Photo 1 A Transformed Campaign small group removes branches and cleans up the yard of a Hillsboro Kan resident Photo 2 Not all of the Sunday service projects were outdoors Here youth and adults play games with residents of one of the local senior adult care home Photo 3 HMBC members braved bone chilling temperatures the Sunday after Thanksgiving to serve their community including winterizing a door for an older Hillsboro resident Leave a comment Comment Name E mail Post 0 Comments Hillsboro congregation worships as they serve community Monday Dec 8 2014 HMBC trades warm sanctuary for frigid Sunday of service projects By Don Ratzlaff Nov 30 wasn t the best Sunday for an outdoor worship service but when serving others is understood as an expression of worship it turned out to be a good day after all That was the response of Brian Allen pastor of Hillsboro Kan MB Church a day after nearly 200 people from the church family endured bone chilling temperatures and wind to tackle a to do list of 16 projects within the city instead of meeting in the sanctuary for a traditional worship service The list of outdoor projects ranged from raking leaves and trimming branches at several residences to replacing the wood planks on park benches and rehabbing picnic tables at Memorial Park One team picked up trash in the wide open spaces along U S Highway 56 vulnerable to the cutting north wind Another team cut and hauled away 10 pickup

    this might be genuine generosity and love with no hidden agenda Even those who had been coming to the warehouse for 10 years said they had never experienced anything like this before Ahmed has met with these youth more than 120 times since She determined that if she was going to make a difference in the lives of these children of God it would demand a heavy commitment on her part They told her that when she is with them their desire to do drugs is reduced She loves them without judgment they say unlike society or even the church At least 40 of them have quit drugs Ahmed says and some of them have influenced young men in a nearby town to stop using too The former users have now learned new skills or have returned to studies at the university and a nursing school One supports himself by farming on land he rents The Bible is a critical piece of Home Makers drug addiction program Ahmed engages the youth through Scripture to show the value of life and hope for the future Besides the skills she has introduced to them Bible studies are part of her weekly program with them No one comes to the warehouse anymore so the warehouse has been closed and locked Mennonite Central Committee is a relief development and peace agency that serves around the world in the name of Christ David Klassen is MCC representative in Nigeria His wife Mary Lou is a peace studies lecturer They are from Kitchener Ont Photo by Dave Klassen In Jos Nigeria left right Samson Dung John Paul Kenth Monday Ibrahim Kwandi Victor Ali and Bitrus Dagam front pose with Margaret Ahmed center executive director Home Makers in front of the warehouse where these young men and many others used to go to use drugs Ahmed mothered the young men helping many to quit using and rebuild their lives Leave a comment Comment Name E mail Post 0 Comments Christmas meal begins ministry to drug users Monday Dec 8 2014 Nigerian woman mothers young men and turns their lives around By Dave Klassen as told him by Margaret Ahmed Margaret Ahmed feared for the safety of her two teenage daughters The family s home in Jos Nigeria was a few hundred yards from a former cotton ginning warehouse where as many as 100 Christian and Muslim young men went to hang out and use drugs Three days before Christmas 2011 she decided to intervene She went to the warehouse to meet the youth some of whom were high Flies buzzed around excrement in the building In this totally strange and unfamiliar environment Ahmed who is rarely at a loss for words did not know what to say Eventually the words came I want to be a mommy to you The young men stared Ahmed kept talking She suggested that the reason they were doing drugs in these squalid conditions and the reason they believed their lives were

    Giving Tuesday the first Tuesday in December is a global day dedicated to giving back Many organizations including evangelical Christian colleges denominations and outreach and mission agencies provide creative ways on Giving Tuesday for people to financially support causes that are important to them Don Morris Mission USA director and currently the interim USMB executive director learned about Giving Tuesday when he did a Google search for non profit fund raising campaigns Morris says The more I read and learned about Giving Tuesday the more I thought it could help us raise awareness of Mission USA s need for financial resources to plant churches The Giving Tuesday program provides a lot of flexibility to tailor the campaign according to our needs The Giving Tuesday movement started in 2012 with the goal of refocusing the holiday season toward generosity After a successful first year Giving Tuesday spread internationally in 2013 Multiple sources reported increased giving in 2013 and the GivingTuesday hashtag was used over a quarter million times on Twitter The NonProfit Times reported Dec 3 that 2014 Giving Tuesday donations were up by more than 45 percent over 2013 and will likely surpass 50 million according to preliminary estimates The publication estimates about 47 million in contributions based on surveys of five companies that process online donations The estimate is a compilation of numbers provided by Blackbaud DonorPerfect Network for Good Razoo Salsa Labs and Click Pledge The same companies reported more than 32 million in donations for Giving Tuesday 2013 These preliminary estimates do not include figures from PayPal the online processing firm used by USMB to process Giving Tuesday donations Last year PayPal processed almost 4 million on Giving Tuesday 2012 Giving Tuesday donations 10 million 101 average gift size 2013 Giving Tuesday donations 19 million 142 average gift size 2013 Tweets with hash tag givingtuesday 320 000 2013 Photos posted to Instagram with hashtags UNselfie and givingtuesday 7 000 Leave a comment Comment Name E mail Post 0 Comments Donations surpass USMB Giving Tuesday goal Monday Dec 8 2014 Contributions will fund three plus church plants By Connie Faber Sidebar What is Giving Tuesday USMB joined the Giving Tuesday movement with the goal of raising awareness of Mission USA s need for financial resources to plant churches But USMB staff members were not sure what to expect Would U S Mennonite Brethren respond to the invitation to give online What would be a reasonable donation goal for a one day fundraising effort When the USMB West Coast office closed Dec 2 the answers were clear Yes U S Mennonite Brethren would respond and that response would be greater than expected Contributions to the USMB Giving Tuesday campaign totaled 54 799 21 exceeding the goal of 30 000 by almost 25 000 Thanks to the generosity of several anonymous donors the first 15 000 in contributions was matched Three USMB congregations Memorial Road MB Church Edmond Okla Vinewood Community Church Lodi Calif and North Park Community Church Eugene
