not just side by side within the body of Christ Small groups provide an opportunity to form essential spiritual friendships But let us not look too soon for the transformation which is yet to be seen For as the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth Therefore we do not lose heart Though outwardly we are wasting away yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen since what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal 2 Cor 4 16 18 Trusting in the one who made us and knows us best let us commit ourselves to Christ and to his body in the sure hope that we and the ones entrusted to our care are being renewed day by day For God is at work within us helping us want to obey him and then helping us do what he wants Phil 2 13 TLB The Holy Spirit is transforming us all whether we can measure those changes or not May we persevere in love for God and for our neighbors as we learn to love one another face to face and hand in hand Photo Stone and her senior prom date in 1988 At the eleventh hour her high school small group arranged a blind date for the evening Amy Chenault Stone is a pastor at College Community Church Mennonite Brethren Clovis Calif She is the wife of one husband and the mother of five children She has a Master of Divinity and an M A in Marriage Family and Child Counseling both from Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary Leave a comment Comment Name E mail Post 1 Comments Mary Anne Isaak 2014 07 10 14 58 04 0 Yes Amy I agree Are small groups transformational No and yes Thanks for your words Are small groups transformational Thursday Jul 10 2014 By Amy Stone What has a small group ever done for me Got me a prom date Kept me connected to church during college Made food for my wedding Brought meals when my children were born Helped me discern God s call on my life Wept with me when I wept Laughed with me when I laughed Challenged me when I was stubborn Held on to hope for me when I was in despair Been the presence of Christ to me throughout my life It has been my privilege to walk alongside many fellow travelers by way of small group structures throughout my church lifetime Hopefully the benefits of those groups have been realized by all involved not for the sole sake of personal enrichment but for the sake of manifesting the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven Have those groups been transformational Yes many of them have been to the extent that they provided a

while praising Mary s It s as if he s inviting us to drop the bitter workaholic act and sit down proverbially or literally as the eager relaxed listener This passage offers priceless insight to me as a parent Yes there is work to be done diapers to change and food to prepare But instead of being anxious and troubled Jesus invites me as a parent to take on Mary s attitude Instead of cultivating that stressed harried hectic attitude with my kids perhaps the Lord wants me to model an attitude of relaxed joy and willing service as I go about my work Instead of gawking over the increasing mountain of dishes in the sink I can thank the Lord for the delicious meal we shared as a family with the food we could afford to buy Rather than begrudgingly taking out the stinky diaper trash I can celebrate the fact that my kids have perfectly working digestive systems that are fearfully and wonderfully made And those dirty spots on the walls can wait As a friend says I m not raising a house I m raising kids If Jesus came to my house for dinner I m sure there would be toys on the floor But I bet he d plop right down between the blocks and the rocking horse hold little Sam on his lap and tell my girls a story Would I stress over dinner I have a few Tilapia fillets and bread loaves in my freezer Maybe if I tell Jesus about my fish and loaves he ll do the cooking In the meantime I think I ll make myself a sign to hang in my entryway that reads If you think my hands are full you should see my heart This essay by Crystal Nachtigall Fresno Calif first appeared on the Bethany MB Church blog proverbs2v6 http proverbs2v6 wordpress com and is reprinted with her permission Leave a comment Comment Name E mail Post 0 Comments The dilemma of Mary and Martha Tuesday Jul 1 2014 There is work to be done How can I sit at Jesus feet by Crystal Nachtigall In the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10 38 42 Martha hosts a dinner for Jesus She s distracted with much serving saying to Jesus Lord don t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself Tell her to help me But the Lord answered her Martha Martha you are anxious and troubled about many things but one thing is necessary Mary has chosen the good portion which will not be taken away from her ESV This story has haunted me for years We all want to be Mary sitting at Jesus feet soaking in the grace and peace of his presence We want to be Mary in our homes and families too we d love to snuggle on the couch with our kids all day reading books making bracelets and playing pretend But
