  • Center Mediator Wins Governor’s 2014 Volunteerism Award |
    and painful litigation He has dedicated his retirement years to working with families through mediation on cases referred by the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts of Fauquier Culpeper and Stafford Counties Many of these cases are quite sensitive and difficult involving custody issues visitation and child and spousal support for Virginia s parents and children Many families cannot afford attorneys and some are simply afraid of the court process Mr Smith travels approximately 20 500 miles per year to mediate with these families meeting with them where and when they are available He has mediated more than 250 cases per year resolving painful disagreements in a respectful manner allowing families to maintain their dignity and provide incentive to adhere to their agreements A foster parent himself he works to help children continue to get the love and support from their parents and family members He works a minimum schedule of 40 hours per week for the sold purpose of helping these families especially the children caught in the middle Mr Smith continues to serve as a role model of how we can all continue to find our purpose to make a positive difference in the lives of others at every time in our lives Congratulations Jim and thank you so much This post has no tag Who is VACCR VACCR is a consortium of nine nonprofit community conflict resolution centers working to help Virginians resolve conflict constructively Please peruse our site to learn more about what we do how to access the services of member centers and how to support or become involved in community based conflict resolution in Virginia Read More Request a Speaker We would be glad to provide someone from VACCR to speak about the services and benefits of community conflict resolution centers Click here or

  • Update on VACCR’s Funding Request to Virginia’s General Assembly |
    the effort was worthwhile VACCR connected with legislators state agencies and other mediation organizations and learned more about what would need to be done to make a successful future request The Office of Dispute Resolution in the Virginia Supreme Court has agreed to work with VACCR to put data together that will help to ascertain the value of mediation to the courts and clients VACCR was able to get some good media coverage on the financial difficulties that the centers are facing And awareness was raised among legislators about the value of community dispute resolution of the centers and of the commitment of center supporters Perhaps most valuable of all members of the mediation community came together to support community based dispute resolution and the promise that it holds Thank you to all who reviewed documents provided political consultation contacted legislators contacted mediators or went to Richmond and other parts of the state to meet with legislators Thank you for your words of encouragement and your camaraderie We hope to continue to work together to educate the public and our lawmakers about how mediation can play a vital role in the attainment of access to justice for Virginians Preparations for a future request may be on the horizon so thank you for your efforts to date and for considering involvement in the next round Christine Poulson Coordinator This post has no tag Who is VACCR VACCR is a consortium of nine nonprofit community conflict resolution centers working to help Virginians resolve conflict constructively Please peruse our site to learn more about what we do how to access the services of member centers and how to support or become involved in community based conflict resolution in Virginia Read More Request a Speaker We would be glad to provide someone from VACCR

    signed Why do people use mediation Taking someone to court can be costly and time consuming and can worsen the relationship which is not helpful in situations where a relationship must be maintained divorcing parents landlords and tenants employees and supervisors etc Solutions imposed by a judge may not be as creative or workable as those created by the parties in dispute and the issue may not get completely resolved Mediation allows each party to be involved directly in the process of finding solutions which often results in solutions that are lasting And over 80 of the people who mediate come to an agreement Mediation works For what types of situations can mediation be used Mediation can be used for almost any type of dispute including family issues like separation and divorce parent child conflict and guardianship and care giving for an elder family member It can be used for consumer issues such as disputes over the quality of services or goods It can be used for workplace issues such as job performance and discrimination It can be used for neighborhood issues such as landlord tenant complaints noise and parking The possibilities are almost endless Where can I get mediation Mediation resources can be found by searching for Mediation in a phone book or on line directory such as Mediate com Also many communities in Virginia have quality non profit community mediation centers that strive to provide mediation to all regardless of ability to pay Most of these centers can be found on the Virginia Association for Community Conflict Resolution s website at www VACCR org or by calling 1 888 VAPEACE The Virginia Mediation Network keeps a list of mediator members on its website at www vamediation org virginia mediators as does the Virginia Supreme Court s Office of
