    much as 13 7 billion in the Clean Water Act penalties alone But the settlement provides needed certainty and will have real benefits for wildlife and Gulf Coast residents The deal allows federal state and local leaders to build on early restoration projects and efforts already underway to restore the Gulf to its full health The money will arrive in several different formulations over the next 17 years with different rules for spending it depending on the source The bipartisan RESTORE Act of 2012 will send a total of 4 4 billion dollars from the Clean Water Act part of the settlement back to the Gulf Coast Mississippi will see 582 million from this funding stream alone But the RESTORE Act dollars do not guarantee the future health of the Mississippi Coast While nearly all of the public debate around the RESTORE Act focused on improving the health of the Gulf the final bill only mandated 30 percent be spent solely on comprehensive ecosystem restoration projects that restore Gulf waters marshes barrier islands and fisheries Nonetheless there are reasons to be hopeful that Gov Bryant and the state Department of Environmental Quality will choose to make smart targeted investments in restoring Mississippi Sound and the Gulf Coast with the remaining RESTORE dollars The state has already demonstrated a commitment to restoration by initiating a coastwide planning process through a separate pot of oil spill dollars This process which thoughtfully engaged local citizens scientists and business interests identified water quality habitat conservation and fisheries as top priorities We hope that this effort provides direction for RESTORE Act monies as well Furthermore the settlement will also send 182 million dollars in Natural Resources Damage Assessment fines back to the state This money a penalty under the Oil Pollution Act will be under

    anglers to advocate for restoring the Mississippi River Delta Specifically the groups called for Edwards to continue momentum advancing the 2012 Coastal Master Plan process They also asked that the governor ensure that fines from the 2010 Gulf oil spill are spent on a range of effective science based restoration solutions The letter highlights that restoring this great natural resource is critical to sportsmen and outdoor recreation interests throughout Louisiana and generates revenue for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries fishing and hunting guides marinas hotels lodges gas stations grocery stores tackle shops restaurants boat dealerships and outdoor magazines websites and blogs Steve Bender director of Vanishing Paradise issued the following statement on the letter True restoration of Louisiana s coast is of vital importance to sportsmen and women Hunters and anglers including the 124 signers who joined us on this letter rely on our healthy natural resources for commercial and recreational purposes The current and best available science shows us that to have any chance of rebuilding our rapidly disappearing delta we must use the full suite of restoration solutions available Different types of projects working together will maximize the benefits to fish and wildlife habitat A variety of projects are necessary to build and sustain land including sediment diversions marsh creation barrier island and headland reconstruction ridge restoration shoreline protection and hydrological restoration Rebecca Triche executive director of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation added As our letter today states we ask Governor Edwards to please make sure that real restoration moves forward Louisiana s sportsmen and women stand ready to help save this special region for future generations to enjoy If we don t act now we will lose our Sportsman s Paradise The entire text of the letter can be found at www vanishingparadise org downloadable pdf

    an Annual Plan that reports on the progress of projects as well as project funding schedules and budgets The agency will host a series of three public meetings this week in Lake Charles New Orleans and Thibodaux and is accepting comments on the draft plan Steve Bender director of Vanishing Paradise a program of National Wildlife Federation uniting sportsmen and women from across the country on the important issue of Mississippi River Delta restoration released the following statement The Annual Plan is an important part of the path forward for restoring the Mississippi River Delta in coastal Louisiana where we are losing land at the rapid rate of a football field every hour With that land goes vital fish and wildlife habitat that is home to some of the best salt and freshwater fishing and waterfowling in the world The Annual Plan gives CPRA the opportunity to take inventory of projects in the Coastal Master Plan project funding for different initiatives and communicate directly with the public on the status and future progress of specific projects We are pleased to see the most current and best available science continue to determine the CPRA s priorities for restoration As the 2016 Annual Plan says the Mid Barataria and Mid Breton sediment diversions must continue to move forward into the engineering and design phases and eventually implementation Sediment diversions use the most powerful tools we have at our disposal to help rebuild the collapsing delta the power sediment and water from the Mississippi River itself Diversions provide the best opportunity to restore our coast because our vanishing delta can only survive if we allow the river that built it to rebuild and sustain it Keeping these diversions progressing should be of utmost importance to us all We look forward to continuing to

    list is now open for a public comment period with comments due September 28 2015 The Council will also hold public meetings on the FPL in each of the Gulf states Steve Bender director of Vanishing Paradise a program of National Wildlife Federation uniting sportsmen and women from across the country on the important issue of Gulf restoration released the following statement in response to today s announcement We are encouraged to see this first Funded Priorities List moving forward into the public comment period and look forward to engaging on the details of the list We thank the RESTORE Council and staff for their efforts to draft this list which is a critical step forward for the Gulf We are committed to seeing strong projects progress to actual construction and implementation including restoration of essential fish and wildlife habitat that makes the Gulf an environmental and economic driver for the entire country A final BP settlement is on the horizon presenting the RESTORE Council and the Gulf states with a landmark opportunity to plan for and achieve meaningful restoration and lasting resilience for the wildlife habitat of the Gulf We look forward to working with the Council on the
