  • Steven and Solveig Storvick Pollei
training and you realize that once you get out of the Upper Midwest with the exception of a few pockets here and Solveig Marit and Steven Storvick Pollei there there just isn t really that ease of finding Scandinavian literature painting woodworking textiles and such The fact that you do have such a place in Decorah Iowa which not only houses all this but celebrates it and takes such grand care of that heritage I just think that shouldn t be lost Ever What do you enjoy most about Vesterheim There are three things First it s the textiles and within that it s the exhibits that they have it s the teachers that they bring in it s the local teachers Second I would have to add the scholarship involved at Vesterheim I thought that the exhibit that you had about the Civil War and the Norwegian immigrants who were a part of the Civil War was fascinating Also the joint exhibit with Kay Larson and the Swedish with the similarities and differences between the two Norwegian and Swedish textiles and how depending on the geography there were only slight differences in some of the sections of Sweden vs Norway Vesterheim is able to weave different cultures together and I always learn something Vesterheim to me is a kind of continuing education Lastly the trips that I have been able to take like the weaving workshop trips with Vesterheim Chief Curator Laurann Gilbertson have been so amazing One of the primary reasons is the respect that Vesterheim s name has in other countries Iceland and Sweden as well as Norway and that is due to the people in place at the museum now but also from many years ago like Lila Nelson Vesterheim s first textile curator and her

  • Muriel Stone
was living in Waterloo working as the departmental director at the University of Northern Iowa and though I moved from Iowa in 2001 I kept up my membership because it s very important I became a Sustaining Fellow in 2012 because I am very interested in history and I m very interested in Vesterheim being successful I know these are hard times for all types of organizations and I just thought I needed to step forward I think that Vesterheim has an established national presence and I think it s important to keep that up What do you enjoy most about Vesterheim The education for adults I really like the Vesterheim journal that comes out quarterly That s a tremendous production What would you tell others to encourage them to become Sustaining Members If it s at all feasible for you to make a gift at that level to very seriously consider it and arrange it I know there will be a lot of organizations making requests of them but Vesterheim is very unique and it s important for us to support the work there I think Vesterheim is extremely important not only to Iowa not only for Norwegians but
